I am looking to book flights from LHR London arriving at SFO at 17.10 with a 2hr 20 min stopover to change terminals to go to LAX departing at 19.30. Is this realistci given bags need to be collected and rechecked?

It's pretty difficult if it's two separate reservations, if it's all on the same reservation it's doable.

  • Very short layover

I am flying from Vancouver to Las Vegas by way of SFO. I only have a 36 minute layover. I am an American citizen. Enough time to make it?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. Assuming both of these flights are on United, you do have enough time if the first flight is on-time but it obviously leaves no time to spare.

Thank you for the quick answer. The flights are both Air Canada, operated by United. It would be cutting it extremely close, wouldn't it... I have not booked yet. Do you think it is crazy to go for it? Thanks a lot :)

It's not crazy, it's just a little risky.

Wondering how much time to allow for customs arriving on a Sunday in early October? Need to schedule shuttle service. I've currently got 1.5 hours to get thru customs & pick up luggage. Is that enough time? Many thanks!!!

    That should be enough time.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! What a terrific help you've been. :)

  • Do you need to go through customs at (SF0) if you have another flight
    Aug 15, 2016
hi flying in to (SFO) 21st from UK, (Heathrow Airport) where i will take a flight from (SF0) to Palm Springs Airport. Do l need to go through customs at (SFO) or is that done at Palm Springs. I am concerned of the timing. l have two hours between flights

In SFO you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. What airlines are you flying?

Hi thank you for replying, l am only travelling with hand luggage, and the airline is British Airways, but united to Palm Springs

OK, then you will go through US Immigration and customs, then go to Terminal 3, get your United boarding pass if you don't already have it, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

  • Will I have time
    Aug 8, 2016
I will be flying with my son from Portland, Or to Santa Barbara with a 1 hour layover in San Franscisco. Both flights are with United. My son has high anxiety and I'm worried I will not make my connecting flight if I have to go back through security (I have never been to your airport). It says connecting flight is in terminal 3. Do you think I'm okay?

You do not have to go through security again. All you have to do in San Francisco is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3.

Thank you so much! I don't fly much and especially with a child. This really puts me at ease. I'm going to see a doctor about having surgery and I'm already very anxious. Thanks, again!

  • Clearing customs/immigration and making a connecting flight
    Aug 6, 2016
Hi, I will be flying into SFO from SYD on AA in Jan at 930am, I need to make a connecting domestic flight to ORD, which is also AA which leaves at 11.17am. Will I have enough time? I'm seriously freaking out that I won't, even called AA wanting to change my flight so I could have some leeway in case of being held up by a long customs line and all they kept telling me was that I had sufficient enough time. Thoughts or experiences please?

It is a legal connection and if the flight is on-time you can make it. If you don't you have all day for them to get you to Chicago. AA has lots of flights from LAX to Chicago.

Sorry, I meant SFO to Chicago. Also AA doesn't fly from Sydney to SFO so that flight will be operated by Qantas.

Yes, sorry, it does say operated by Qantas although it says AS on my ticket. Thank you for responding. If you were me would you be pushing for them to change the flight? I've never been to the states before so I'm really stressing about missing the Damon flight.

AA* Damn* Sorry, auto correct .

    You should have enough time.

Thanks mate. I hope you're right. I've tried to get a seat at the front so hopefully I may be able to get off the plane a little quicker. Is it far to get to terminal 2 from the international part of the hotel? Also, do you think 50mins in Chicago is enough time to catch my other flight to SDF? They're both AA flights. Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate your kindness in responding.

Airport * not hotel, this tablet is killing me! >:-(

It's not far to T2. Also 50 minutes should be enough time in Chicago. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3.

  • How early should I arrive?
    Jul 23, 2016
I'm flying from SFO to LED on AA to JFK as my first leg. If my flight is at 7:15am, how early do I need to arrive? Also, will I be going through customs at SFO or at JFK?

There is no US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in SFO is go through security. Arriving at 5-5:30 should be OK.

  • Time to transit

I will be flying in on United via Hong Kong and will have 1h35 before my flight other United flight. Non US citizen. Will that be enough time?

That's barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.

How to connect From Hawaiian airline to American departure at SFO.

You will arrive in the International Terminal and depart from Terminal 1 or 2. If you have checked bags you will have to claim them from Hawaiian, walk or take the AirTrain to your departure terminal, re-check your bags at the AA check-in desk, and go through security. If you don't have checked bags and are already checked in for your AA flight you can go directly to your departure terminal and through security.

  • Time in advance
    Jun 30, 2016
I have a flight to LAX from SFO (with AA) at 14:15. How time in advance should I get to the airport? Thanks

If you get there at 12:15 that should be totally OK.

We are flying in from Auckland into San Francisco on Air NZ, arriving at 11:05am. The flight we are considering out of SF leaves at 1:45pm going to Chicago O'hare. Will 2 hours and 40 minutes be enough time or should we try finding an alternative?

Yes that should be enough time.

  • SFO > LAX > SJD

I'm flying from SFO to Cabo San Lucas, with a layover at LAX. I didn't consider the layover portion when I booked. If my first flight is within the US, with my final destination being Mexico, at what point will I go through customs? I'm worried i won't make my connecting flight now. Any tips appreciated.

There is no US customs when leaving the US. You will go through Mexican immigration and customs when you arrive in Cabo.

I have 1.5 hours to connect and my bags are scheduled to be checked all the way through with Star Alliance. Do I need to pick up my bags and go through immigration? Will I require more time if so? Thank you

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, got through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time.

Hi - A few months ago I booked a flight from ICN to BWI with a 4-5 hour layover at SFO (travel date 26 Oct 2016). I was just notified that my connecting flight was "canceled" and I am now on a connection from SFO to ORD and I have one hour and 20 minutes. My connection from ORD to BWI is one hour and 55 minutes. I am booked on United all the way through and will be carry on only. Is this enough time to make the connection?

No, 1 hr 20 minutes is not enough time for an international to domestic connection at SFO. You need to contact United or your travel agent and request an alternate routing or a refund.
