  • PDX to Seattle (SEA) to Seoul (ICN) to Hanoi (HAN)
    Aug 13, 2015
I will fly from PDX to SEA, then from SEA to Seoul Incheon (ICN). Where will I need to go through immigration/customs? Will I need to reclaim my bags too?

You will go through Vietnamese Immigration and customs when you get to Hanoi. Assuming all tickets were purchased on the same reservation, that is the first time you will see your bags after you check them in Portland.

  • Transit
    Aug 7, 2015
Hi there, I'm planning a trip from Sacramento, CA (SMF) to Vancouver, BC (YVR). The layover point would be Seattle Tacoma (SEA). I'm wondering what how much transit time I would need to get from one flight to the next? I found layover times which range from 45 minutes to 3 hours. What would you say is the minimum time needed? Also, what is the process? Would I need to collect my baggage and check in again? Is there a difference (in terms of layover processing) between taking Delta and Alaska Airlines? Thanks for your help! Much appreciated!

The process both ways is that you walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You won't have to do anything with your baggage or go through customs in Seattle either way. There's no difference in flying Delta or Alaska when it comes to the connection. Alaska has more flights to Vancouver so if the price is the same, I'd probably go with them since it gives you more options in case you're delayed.

  • Enough time?
    Aug 7, 2015
Arriving from Victoria at 6:40am. We need to be on our next flight to Orlando at 8:10am. Will we have enough time to clear customs? Both flights are with Alaska and booked together

    That should be enough time.

  • Transit to Portland
    Jul 31, 2015
My daughter coming in from Japan with ANA and transit to Portland via Alsaka Airline in SEA and the layover time is only 1 hr 20 mins. We are wondering whether she had sufficient time to catch the flight to Portland and this is the 1st time she is at Seattle Airport and she has to go through immigration, pick up their bags, and check in at Alaska and check their bags again. Will 1 hr 20 mins hours be enough time for her to do all these things and not be late for check in at Alaska Airline. Appreciate any kind advise.

That is below the minimum international to domestic connection time. That is not enough time. Since it sounds like she is on two separate tickets she needs at least 3 hours between flights.

Thank you for the kind response. The ticket is booked thru' ANA which included the transit using Alsaka Airlines. I had sounded out our concern to ANA and their reply is that it is within the minimum standard. The bags are tagged to Portland but not sure about the boarding pass. I am wondering how much time is required to clear the immigration, get the luggage and recheck in the luggage and get the boarding pass and ahead to the departure gate. Do you think is it better to check with Alsaka Airlines? Thank you.

If tickets were booked together then 90 minutes is the official required time. However, if she doesn't make her connection she doesn't have much to worry about as there are flights from Seattle to Portland leaving almost every 30 minutes that she can be rebooked on.

Noted with thanks. Much appreciated and hope that she can make it without any hiccups in an alien airport. Thank you for the kind advise.

  • International Layover from Delta to Alaska
    Jul 24, 2015
Family is coming from South Korea with Delta. Arriving in SEA and connecting flight to Los Angeles with Alaska. They have 3 hour layover time. They don't speak English so I want to give them as much information as possible, but I don't live in Seattle nor ever been to SEA-TAC airport. So, I found some info that they will be arriving in South Satellite, go through immigration, pick up their bags, and check in at Alaska and check their bags again. Will 3 hours be enough time for them to do all these things and not be late for check in at Alaska, including TSA? After they pick up bags, will they have to find an Alaska airline section/check in desk to check in again? or is there a separate section for them to go for re-checkin? Alaska airline seems big in SEA-TAC, does anyones have an idea where they will be going to (ie. Concourse C, D, North Sat)? Any information is much appreciated.

Yes, 3 hours should be enough time. The re-check desk will be fairly obvious after they go through customs. A flight to LAX could depart from C, D, or N. You won't know until the day of the flight.

changing Delta planes on my way to Vancouver with only 30 min layover. Will there be enough time to get to my other gate? Is this a relatively small airport? I will only have a carry on but will have my 85 year old father in tow

All the Delta gates are close together, it's possible.

  • Luggage Check in after Customs?
    Jul 14, 2015
Hello, i would appreciate if i can get help, where my family can drop/check in the luggage after Immigration. On her return flight to Calgary from Alaska AIrline. Will it be at Alaska Counter? how would she where she had to drop her luggage for her flight to Clagary. Thanks

Where is the other flight in this itinerary to? I understand Seattle-Calgary, but is that it?

Thanks ZAP, its from KHI > DUBAI > SEATTLE > CALGARY i know there iwll be immigration process at Seattle, but for check in do i have to go the Alaska AIrline counter if not then how do my family determine where to put their luggage for check in? Thanks

If their bags are tagged through to YYC, then they can re-check their bags at the re-check desk immediately after they clear customs. If their bags are only tagged through to SEA, they will have to have their bags transferred to the main terminal, take the train to the main terminal, then claim the bags again, and take them to the Alaska Airlines ticket counter and pay a checked bag fee. On the Calgary-Seattle-Dubai-Karachi route they will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. If their bags are tagged through to KHI then they won't do anything with their bags in Seattle. if they are only tagged through to SEA, they will go to the domestic baggage claim, claim their bags, and then take them to the Emirates check in counter in the main terminal.

Appreciated ZAP, lets say they are tagged through to YYC, then they can re-check their bags by this you mean they have to collect their luggage and re-check again at re-check desk for Alaska Airline? Will there recheck counter for Alaska Airline? I am sorry i don't travel that much so its kind of new process to me. Because on itinerary it says 2 piece of luggage on return flight as well, and Alaska is partner flight of Emirates, so i am sure they will not charge for bags at seattle. Thanks for the help

There is a re-check desk for connecting passengers who just went through customs right after the exit of customs. It will be hard to miss.

Cool, now i am getting a clear picture, on last thing will this re-check desk for every airline? or is it for all connecting passengers and officcials will sort it out for their respective airline Thanks

The re-check desk is for every airline, but Alaska has their own staff there to help since the majority of passengers connecting off international flights in Seattle are connecting to Alaska flights.

Thanks a bunch ZAP, really appreciated. felling bit more comfortable now.

  • USA Visa for Transit from Calgary to Dubai?
    Jul 13, 2015
I am getting a ticket from emirate which is from Calgary to Dubai with layover at Seattle. I have Canadian PR. Do I need to have US Visa even if I am a transit passenger?

Yes, you need a US Transit Visa unless you are a citizen of a Visa Waiver Country.

  • Connecting Domestic to International- Non-US citizens
    Jul 13, 2015
Quick question- I have a group of travelers who are Japanese. They will depart MSO to SEA and then later that day connect to NRT. The domestic is Alaska Airlines, intl Delta. Confirmed w/Alaska that if their flights are on one reservation they will not need to recheck-in with Delta and will be checked in until NRT. Therefore, there's no need for them to exit out of the terminals during their transfer, correct? Thanks.

Correct. They will just have to take the underground trains from their arrival concourse, C, D, or N, to the S Satellite where they will depart. They are all connected inside security.

  • Security check in main terminal ?
    Jul 13, 2015
We are flying in on Delta from Atlanta and then going to Vancouver on Delta SkyWest. Do we need to go through international security at the main terminal or can we stay in the South section ?

There is no such thing as "international security". All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Seattle. You will go through Canadian Immigration and Customs when you get to Vancouver.

  • Terminal Transfers
    Jul 12, 2015
We am arriving from Vancouver and then flying to Honolulu on Delta Airlines. My small amount of research suggests that we arrive at the South Terminal and Depart from the South Terminal. Can anyone confirm this? If so I am hoping that we won't have to change terminals and catch trains.

S is a concourse, not a Terminal, but yes, both flights will probably be in S but Delta uses a few gates outside of S. However, since you will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Vancouver, all you have to do in Seattle is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Taking the train isn't hard or time consuming.

  • calgary >seattle >dubai >karachi
    Jul 11, 2015
Hi, I am a canadian citizen, I am traveling through calgary to karachi, from calgary alaska airline will take me to seattle and from there I have to continue with emirates airlines, do I have to collect my check-in baggage from seattle and go through to the US customs/immigration or directly go to the emirates check-in counter? I have only 2 hours and im wondering that wud it be enough time to go through this process?

  • Calgary> SEattle>Dubai>Karachi

Hello, I am travelling from Calgary to Seattle and then connecting flight to Dubai -Karachi. Please anyone can help ,e to understand do i have to the immigration and Custom again at Seattle? and how long is the process Thanks

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary. You will not need to go through US Customs & Immigration in Seattle. However, if you are traveling on two separate reservations you will have to claim your bags from your first airline and re-check it with Emirates.

Thanks for the reply ZAP, When we say 2 separate reservation do we mean change of airline? I am flying with Alaska to Seattle then I have connecting flight to Dubai via Emirates. Though I have booked the tickets via emirates. So please explain me. On the side note I called Emirates help center where they said as I am non USA citizen and only on PR status in Canamda so I have to do immigration and cuatoms again. Your help will be much apprwciated Thanks

If you booked both tickets through emirates then you have one reservation. Emirates help center is wrong. All passengers on flights to the US from Calgary go through US Immigration and Customs in Calgary and arrive into the US like a domestic flight.

Wonderful thanks a bunch ZAP. Really appreciated for your input So this means I will be getting all my boarding passes from Alaska Ailrones counter here in Calgary?

Hi ZAP, you are very helpful. My senior parents do not know english, fist time connect flight at Seattle. So I am looking for more details what will they do after clearing US immigration and custom. they do not have checked in bags. Do they have to take train from S satllite to main terminal , then upstairs to go departue level, go through secuirty check point? south loop, north loop and between main terminal south staion and north station trains are all undergrand and accessible post security area ?

If they already have their boarding passes for their flight to Vancouver then they can go through security right in the S concourse and take the train to their departure concourse.

Thank you!!! Aprreciate your info, that's so helpful!!! I checked the security chcck point map, I only saw the five security check point at main termainal, where is the S satlite security point located?

There is a checkpoint in the lower level of the S Satellite for passengers transferring off international flights. It's not on maps since it can only be accessed by arriving international passengers.

  • Short layover - separate tickets
    Jul 15, 2015
Hi. I'm planning a trip in Feb. BA flight from London lands at 11.05 air Alaska to kelowna flies at 13.15. I will have separate tickets for the two sectors. Do the two tickets disadvantage me. Is there for example a special immigration assistance if you have a single ticket connecting flight? I have heard that BA can give you a pass if you have a booked connection. I hear that SEA is good for immigration times but 2h10 seems tight to me. Any comments, advice gladly received

Yes, having two tickets makes this a very difficult transfer. With a single ticket you can re-check your bags right after clearing US Customs in the S satellite then go through security and take the train to your departure gate. With two separate tickets you will have to send your bags to the main terminal, take the train there, claim them again, then take them to the Alaska counter to re-check, pay a checked bag fee, then go through security. 2 hrs 10 minutes is barely pushing what's possible for two separate tickets, even if everything goes smoothly.

Thanks for the advice. Will it make a difference if I have checked in on line and also pre printed my baggage tags. Will that allow me to recheck the bags after customs?

I don't know if the re-check counter in the S satellite is able to accept bags with home-printed tags. The counter is staffed by Alaska airlines personnel, so maybe they can help you avoid a trip to the main terminal to re-check your bags.

Thanks. I will email them and ask the question. If they will take the bags do you think it is a reasonable connection. Assuming it's all on time?

Yes, if they are able to take your bags at re-check it's definitely possible.

I have spoken to Alaskan Air and thought I would post their reply to finish of this thread. You are right - a home printed bad tag is not a real bag tag. It allows you to use some super fast bag drop in the main terminal. Without a proper Airline bag tag you can drop your bags in the S satellite. However they are a baggage partner with BA and say it is possible for BA to "cross line" check my bag through to Kelowna. If Alaskan were a One World partner then BA would be obliged to do so. For my situation it remains a bit at BA discretion if they cross line check the bags. Next call ... BA. Thanks for your help.

Sorry typo. Without a proper bag tag you CAN NOT drop your bags in the S satellite.

Hi Zap. The flight gods have been kind to me. BA just mover our flight 25 mins earlier. So I now have 2 1/2 hours lay over. How does that sound for the full rechecking activity?
