  • GREATER TAMPA METRO AREA AIRPORTS
Tampa International is a popular airport and has received many awards, much due to the terminal configuration minimizing walking distances. The four airside terminal are home to Southwest, Independence Air, Midwest and Spirit, accessible via the monorail, while the three-level landside terminal accommodates airlines organized into Red and Blue signifying their location. St. Peterburg/Clearwater Airport is 10.3 miles from Tampa, with more limited airlines and amenities. 40 miles from Tampa International is the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport--a small airport with a stress-free atmosphere. Area residents, as well as domestic and international tourists use this airport. An then, of course, there is Orlando International MCO, which, although over 80 miles from Tampa International, is a choice if you want to be closer to all the entertainment of Disneyland, etc.

1. Tampa International Airport TPA, located five miles west of downtown Tampa, Florida, has been recognized as one of the best airports in the nation and the world in global consumer surveys. It also was the recipient of the First ACC Excellent in Procurement Award in early 2009. The accolades can be attributed in large part to Tampa airport's hassle-free satellite terminal configuration that minimizes walking between ticketing, gates and baggage claim. TPA's landside terminal contains three levels, baggage, ticketing and transfer, and airlines are organized into Red and Blue Airlines, which indicates airline location in the terminal. From the terminal's transfer level, departing passengers take a monorail to one of four airside terminals. In 2005, Tampa International Airport opened Airside C, a 315,000-square-foot facility, which accommodates 16 gates, 10 lanes of security screening and five works of public art. The airside is home to Southwest Airlines, Independence Air, Midwest and Spirit. In addition, the airside boasts state-of-the-art features such as free wireless internet access throughout and information kiosks. TPA Airport is served by major passenger airlines with daily nonstop flights to numerous domestic destinations and weekly nonstop flights to international destinations. Although many airports strive for the distinction, Tampa TPA Airport succeeds in delivering a world-class airport experience.

2. St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport PIE--10.3 miles from Tampa Airport-- is centrally located four miles north of St. Petersburg, Florida, between the metropolitan areas of Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Sarasota/Bradenton and Tampa, all situated on the Florida Gulf Coast. The area is a long-time favorite tourist destination as home of two of the top ten beaches in the continental U.S. Many airlines serve the airport with direct and connecting flights to U.S. cities and Canada, with connections to the world. Allegiant is the dominant airline, offering numerous direct flights to major US cities. The Beau Rivage Resort & Casino offers now service to the Gulfport-Biloxy Airport. A total of 742,380 passengers used this Airport in 2008. To get to the Airport you have the option of taking a taxi, limo or the SuperShuttle, which is a shared-ride van service. The Airport's parking lots offer short- and long-term parking (with a stand-by remote parking lot) and are open two hours prior to the first flight and one hour after arrival of the last flight. Cash, Credit Cards, and Debit Cards. The passenger terminal offers teh following amenities: a restaurant at pre-security, a news and gift shop, and food and beverage kiosks at post-security. It also offers a full-service lounge on the second floor. There is even an on-airport Golf Course.

3. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport SRQ --39.6 miles from Tampa Airport--located approximately five miles from downtown Sarasota, is a small airport that is used by both domestic and international tourists as a gateway to enjoying the Florida Gulf Coast. Sarasota Bradenton Airport serves residents and visitors to five adjacent counties: Sarasota, Manatee, De Soto, Hardee and Charlotte. SRQ is located on the West coast of Florida centered between Tampa Bay and Ft. Myers. The Airport offers a comfortable, secure and stress-free atmosphere. Airline ticketing, baggage claim, and other services are steps away from the main concourse and the commuter gates. Both short- and long-term parking lots are adjacent to the main terminal. SRQ airport is served by major national and international airlines with nonstop flights to many U.S. and overseas destinations. SRQ's main terminal has two levels: the lower level houses baggage claim and ticketing and the upper level departure gates. The Airport recently recweived close to $1.7 million in stimulus funds for the remodeling of its passenger terminal. Construction has started and should be completed by February/March of 2010, adding 5,000 square feet or a third of the extisting passenger terminal. The projects includes plans for the relocation of the screening checkpoint, expansion of the passenger waiting areas, addition of two new restrooms, a new baggage system, a new baggage processing room, doubling the size of the ticket counters, relocation of the rental car counters, and more room overall for passenger comfort. The face of the building and the restaurant will remain the same; the remodel will connect the existing terminal and security building to make one large building. The south facing side of the remodeled terminal is designed as a large glass wall overlooking the restaurant patio area. The new glass wall will open to allow fresh air into the terminal.

4. Orlando Airport MCO --81.8 miles from Tampa Airport--Orlando International Airport (MCO) is one the 30 busiest airports in the world given its proximity to popular attractions such as Disney World, Universal Studios, the Kennedy Space Center and numerous convention-ready hotels. The state-of-the-art airport showcases central Florida's sunshine and lush vegetation inside and out. The tri-level main terminal is connected via an enclosed and elevated shuttle system to four satellite terminals with boarding gates. Orlando MCO Airport's new terminal 4 is especially striking with a huge skylight dome and 4,650 square feet for floor mosaics featuring Florida flora and fauna. A 443-room Hyatt Regency Hotel sits atop the main terminal - its lobby is a park-like oasis amidst the bustling airport. MCO airport is served by over 50 domestic and international airlines with Delta, Southwest, US Airways and American leading the pack in passengers. In an area full of renowned attractions, the attractive Orlando Airport can hold its own.
