  • how long it will take to get the work permit
    Sep 24, 2015
Hi. My flights are AC026 , AC240 from Shanghai to Vancouver then to Edmonton and both on Air Canada. My connection is 2 hours.I am on a Chinese passport with a Canadian work visa. So during the connection time I need to go to immigration office to get my work permit. Will 2 hours connection time enough to me? Thanks!

flying with Air Canada from Regina, connecting Calgary and Vancouver for departure with Air New Zealand. Flying Air Canada. Inexperienced flyers. Please advise as to procedure with transfers. I have been told we will go through customs in Vancouver prior to boarding with Air New Zealand. Thankyou

You were told incorrectly. There is no Canadian Customs when departing Canada. All you have to do in Vancouver is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • I don't think I'll have enough time

I am flying into YVR from SFO (Terminal 3) and then departing YVR for YLW (Main Terminal). There is only 45 minutes between my flights. Am I going to have enough time to clear Customs? I am thinking that my bags will be checked through, though I am not positive.

You will have to claim your bags to go through Canadian customs. This will be very difficult, probably impossible. If you are on Air Canada, they fly frequent flights to Kelowna, so you can probably be rebooked unless you are already on the last flight.

  • On a work visa. Is connection time enough?
    Sep 3, 2015
Hi. My flights are: AKL-YVR-YTZ both on Air New Zealand. My connection is 1 hour 45 minutes. I am on a NZ passport with a Canadian work visa. Will I have enough time for immigration seeing I am on a work visa?

That should be enough time. Note that your Vancouver-Toronto flight will be operated by Air canada, not Air New Zealand, and that you will arrive at Toronto Pearson airport (YYZ), not Toronto City (YTZ)

  • Flight in and back to US

For insurance purposes, I have to return to Canada from the U.S. And then return...presumably on the same plane. Can I enter and stay in the departures lounge without going through the customs and security sections? I will have no luggage as there is only a two hour wait for the outgoing flight.

No, you have to go through Canadian Immigration then security and US Immigration preclearance.

Darn! That's what I was afraid of. Thank you for your reply.

  • MNL - YVR - YYC
    Aug 23, 2015
Hi, I have a trip this Oct to YYC. It goes this way: Oct 24 MNL YVR PR Oct 24 YVR YYC AC There is a total of 3 hrs and 15 minutes layover at the Vancouver Airport. Will this be enough so I can clear my flight to Calgary? By the way, Philippine Airlines owns the ticket stock, so will my checked baggage be transported all the way from MNL to YYC or I still need to go through the Canadian Immigration and then recheck my bag later for my YYC flight? Thanks.

Yes, that should be enough time. The Philippine airline agent in Manila will let you know if they can check your bags to YYC or not. Either way you will have to claim them in Vancouver to go through Canadian customs. However, if they are tagged to YYC you can immediately re-check them at the re-check desk. Otherwise you will have to take them to the Air Canada check-in desk and pay checked bag fees.

Thank you. Do you know any cheap transportation from YYC to a specific location in the Downtown Calgary?

I am a Canadian Citizen travelling from Toronto to Adelaide, Australia. I have a 6.5 hour stop over in Vancouver before I fly to Auckland and transfer to Adelaide. I would like to leave the airport to meet with a friend in Vancouver... Is there enough time? And will I have to bring my baggage with me?

Yes, that is enough time to leave the airport and assuming all tickets were purchased on the same reservation your bags will be tagged through to Adelaide and you won't have to claim them in Vancouver.

I am flying from Manila to Vancouver on Philippine Airlines, then to Seattle. My flight to Seattle is separate as Philippine Airlines did not have a codeshare with Air Canada Express. Does this count as a transit through YVR? I do not have a visa as I understand Philippine passport holders are part of the transit without visa program. Do I need to clear Canadian immigration and customs first, and then proceed to the US clearance area?

I believe YVR has a secure walkway between International arrivals and US Departures. However, if your bags aren't checked through to Seattle you will have to go through Canadian Immigration to claim and re-check them. the YVR website has a very clear description of the procedures: http://www.yvr.ca/en/navigating-yvr/passenger-guides/connecting-through-yvr.aspx

  • flying from the US to Australia via YVR
    Aug 15, 2015
I am flying from Denver, Colorado to YVR and then 2 hours later from YVR to Sydney, Australia (SYD). Both flight with Air Canada. When I arrive in YVR from Denver will I need to clear Canadian Customs and then go through security again to fly from YVR to SYD or can I just stay in the secure zone and transfer to my International flight to Sydney?

I believe that Vancouver has a walkway directly from US Departures to International departures so you should not have to go through Canadian Immigration, but I'm no 100% sure about that. If I recall the Vancouver airport website is quite good.

  • from HK to Toronto connecting flight in Vancouver
    Aug 5, 2015
I am returning from Hong Kong to Toronto, connecting flight in Vancouver airport. I have a couple questions: (1) Do I have to claim my luggage for custom and then check-in again from Air Canada (2) The layover time is 1 hr 20 min. Is this sufficient time? Thanks so much for your help. any info is helpful Michael

Yes, in Vancouver you will go through Canadian Immigration, claim your bags, go through Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. That layover time is possible but cutting it close. but don't worry too much as Air Canada has almost hourly flights from YVR to YYZ.

Hello, I have a client who's migrating to Winnipeg Canada and they'll be coming from Manila - Vancouver - Winnipeg. Please advise if they still need to claim their luggages upon arrival in YVR? or this is it tag up to YWG?

Yes, they will have to claim their baggage in Vancouver to go through Canadian customs.

  • Flying YYZ-YVR-SEA
    Aug 4, 2015
If I buy a ticket on this route and decide not to go to SEA (Stay in YVR) can I get my luggage and leave the airport without going through customers?

No, you can't. if you want to do that you will have to do Carry-on only and it will have to be the last leg of your trip.

  • Enough Connection time?
    Aug 4, 2015
I am a U.S. Citizen flying from Frankfurt to Vancouver on Condor airlines arriving in Vancouver at 4:40 pm. I have a separate WestJet ticket from Vancouver to San Francisco departing at 7:30 pm. Will I have enough time to clear Canadian customs, gather my bag, check in for the West Jet flight and clear US customs in time to make the WestJet flight?

It should be barely enough time. Luckily YVR isn't a huge airport.

  • Domestic to international transfers

I will be flying from Nanaimo (YCD) to YVR and then onto London - I have 125 mins before my flight to london - do i have to go through security in nanaimo and vancouver or just once ?

If both tickets are on the same reservation then you will only have to go through security in Nanaimo.

  • enough time for connection ?
    Jul 27, 2015
Hello, My son will be arriving Vancouver from Paris at 16.40 ,pick up his bag, clear custom and check in for his connecting flight (different airline)to Smithers that leaves at 18.00 .Is 1 hrs 20 mn enough time to do all that ? Thanks

It will be close. It depends on his flight from Paris arriving on-time. If he's flying Hawkair to Smithers I expect they'll be a little more lenient on the check-in deadline than Air Canada Express will.

Thanks, better play safe and overnight in Vancouver.Unfortunately Hawkair has pulled out from smithers .
