GREATER WASHINGTON DC METRO AIRPORTS
While Reagan Airport is the most elegant of the three airport choices, only Washington Dulles and Baltimore/Washington offer direct international connections. Other area airports and their distance in miles to Washington D.C. are: Hagerstown Regional AP - 66.3; Harrisburg international airport - 89.1; Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional - 91.0
1. Ronald Reagan Airport DCA is located on the Potomac River, 3.4 miles from Washington D.C.'s city center. It prides itself by offering high-end shops and restaurants. Transportation by taxi takes minutes and saves you time and money. However, due to its location, flights are restricted to destinations within a 1,250-mile radius, diminishing its ability to offer more West-Coast and international direct flights.
2. Washington Dulles International Airport IAD is located 22.5 miles west of Washington, D.C., in Dulles, at the border of Fairfax & Loudon Counties, in Virginia, and offers a host of national and international airlines (24 international and 12 national major airlines with 40 international nonstops), but lacks the choice of low-fare airlines. So far, the AP also lacks inter-city rail connections to D.C. (which Baltimore/Washington AP offers). Immigration lines can be long at times.
3. Baltimore/Washington International Airport is located 27.2 miles northeast of Washington D.C., in Linthicum, and 10 miles south of Baltimore, Maryland. The Airport offers an inter-city rail connection to D.C., however, a frequent user points out that the transfer to the station is 'dismal', therefore, it might be a better idea to take a taxi to the train station instead. For international travelers it offers shorter immigration lines than at Dulles. IAD Airport also attracts more low-fare airlines.
