Hi, I'm flying into IAD from LGA next Sunday 4 Jan and arrive at 7am. I then have a flight to LHR at 6:30pm - what's the cheapest way to get from the airport to DC, and what time should I look at leaving DC to go back to airport?

The cheapest way is to take the Dulles flyer bus to west falls church metro station and then the metro into the city. Leave he city by 3:30 pm

  • 45 minutes connection SFO - IAD - FRA

I have a 45 minutes layover time - will I make it? I arrive from SFO to IAD on Wed at 16:34 via Lufthansa flight LH7489 and I have to depart at 17:33 on Lufthansa flight LH9051 to FRA (Frankfurt). These Lufthansa flights are operated by United... Will I have to go through security again or will the arrival and departure gates will be on the same concourse? Thanks!

Both flights will be on the C/D concourse. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • Copenhagen to Portland, OR layover time

Hello! I am flying to Portland, OR, US on Sunday, December 21st from the Copenhagen, Denmark airport via SAS Scandinavian airlines. I will be flying with two checked bags. My flight details are as follows: CPH-IAD 12:20PM-3:15PM (SAS) IAD-PDX 5:29PM-8:23PM (SAS operated by United) I am wondering if this 2 hour and 15 minute layover will be enough to get my bags, go through immigration and customs, and then check my bags in again? I have heard this is a very busy airport and with Christmas so soon, I am quite worried that I won't make it. Does anyone have any advice or input? It would be greatly appreciated! Thank you thank you thank you.

Yes that should be enough time. Contrary to popular belief, airports aren't drastically busier around Christmas, especially international flights.

  • Can we have a night in the city?

Hi I'm due to land in IAD on Saturday 3rd Jan at 8.07pm from Cleveland and fly back to LHR at 9.35am the next morning. We are flying with United and would like to know if we are able to head into Washington for the evening? If yes, Would we have to pick up our baggage or is it checked all the way through to London? Thanks

You will have to pick up your baggage. Yes, you can go into the city but be aware that Dulles is far from the city center. You would have to leave the City around 6 AM to make your 9:35 flight.

hi, I will be travelling form singapore to Pittsburgh, with layovers in Japan and Dulles. It's all on one ticket. I will be checking bags but when I get to Japan, will I need to go through customs, security, etc? What about Dulles? I have 1 hr 55 minute layovers in japan and dulles - will that be enough time? I will be going through Unted airways I believe.

In Tokyo you only have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. In Dulles, you will arrive in Concourse C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

I have a 6 hour layover then continuing on to Dublin (International Flight). Is this enough time to leave airport to see any sites?

Not really. It takes quite awhile to get from Dulles to any sites, unless you want to see the Udvar Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum which is located just outside the Dulles Airport grounds and is connected to Dulles by a Bus - http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/routes/983.htm

Thanks for the response. Trip already came and went… and since we arrived 3 hours late it didn't really matter. Thanks anyway!

  • 1:45 layover for IAD to BUF 11th August
    Jul 14, 2014

the Lufthansa flight i have booked tickets from lands at Washington at 3:05pm and then, i got to board the Buffalo flight that departs at 4:50pm.. i was told that immigration at IAD takes quite long and i am not a US citizen either..Is it true? if so, what should i do for i don't want to miss my connecting flight? please help

Immigration at IAD is actually usually quite short. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time. If for some reason you do miss your connection, you will be rebooked on the next flight to Buffalo

ZAP, firstly thanks for your reply. you say i will be "rebooked on the next flight to Buffalo"..who is going to do that for me? And secondly, isn't the period of 2pm-4pm one of heavy traffic at IAD? lot of international flights landing would make overseas immigration plus customs check longer and additionally, i need to get my luggage checked-in for my connecting flight..in general, are these all possible in my 1:45 hours window or do i need to worry?

United or Lufthansa should be able to rebook you if necessary. Your amount of time is sufficient. Yes there are many international flights coming in at that time but IAD is built to handle it.

Thanks again ZAP..one last thing I noticed and wanted your advice on. The issuing airlines of my flight booking is Lufthansa but the flight is operated by United Airlines. I will land at IAD by United Airlines flight and the departure to Buffalo is also by a United flight..will this fact help me in any way by quickening up the process? Lastly, I spoke to Lufthansa folks and they said they don't rebook passengers who miss their connecting flight due to Immigration delays. Rebooking is done only if their flight arrives late and connecting flight is missed due to that delay.

  • Is an hour layover long enough?

I had flights booked with United from Indianapolis to Beijing. My flight got changed due to the airline not having my original flight and so I was given the option to take a similar flight, but the layover is oy 59 minutes (between Dulles and going to Beijing). I'm using United for all flights so I don't need to collect baggage. Is this reasonable to get to the terminal to go to Beijing on time?

United uses midfield concourse C/D; C gates C1-30 & D gates D1-32 are connected by a walkway. you have enough transfer time.

You may also arrive at A, which is connected to C and D by the Aerotrain and mobile lounge inside security.

I'm thinking of booking a flight from Vienna, Austria to Denver CO that would leave me with a 90 min layover in IAD. I'm familiar with the airport, but I've never had a connection this tight. Will I make it to my next flight? Thank you in advance.

  • International to Domestic

Howdy! I'm a US citizen arriving in Dulles from Paris. I land at 3:05 p.m. (Friday in June) and have an 2 hour and 11 min layover. Will that give me enough time to connect to my 5:16 flight to Houston?

Yes, that should be enough time. If you are flying on United you will clear immigration in United's facility in the C/D concourse.

I will be flying from JAX to IAD on UA5843 which arrives at 4:14 pm. My next flight is UA936 to ZRH at 5:54. Is an hour 30 enough for me to make my next flight considering I'm flying in domestic and flying out international? Do I have to check in with my bags and go through security again?

All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. They will likely both be on the C/D concourse, however, if you arrive in the A concourse, the Mobile Lounge and Aerotrain connect it to C/D. You should have plenty of time.

I have 55 minutes on layover all United flights. If flight is on time do I have time to transfer?

Yes, that should be enough time. All flights will be on the C/D concourse and are connected inside security.

  • Is 1 hr 10 mins enough for connecting domestic to international?

I'm flying from Charlottesville with UA3600 arriving at 11.10 and have to connect international flight to Japan (UA 803), departing at 12.20. Do I have enough time to run around? Do I have to pass security check again? I understand that my luggage will be checked through.

You do not have to go through security. All you have to do is take the mobile lounge or plane train from concourse A where you will arrive to concourse C/D where you will depart. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • Tight Connection at IAD with family
    Apr 4, 2014

ZAP and other IAD experts, I'm travelling with wife and 9 year old daughter from Seattle to Buffalo with a layover at IAD of 51 minutes. It's a part of one reservation with United. I guess I'll be arriving at terminal D at 9PM and taking off on a commuter plane from terminal A at 9:51 to BUF. Now I realize it may not be doable with carry on luggage and family. Can you guys suggest the best way to make this connection as it's the last flight to BUF that day. Thank you!

If arriving at Midfield Concourse C/D, a shuttle will meet you near Gate D11 & Starbucks, and will take you to Midfield Concourse A/B, gate A6. 51 mins should suffice for transfer. To get an idea of the Terminal layout, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Thank you tumar14. I just hope my first flight is not late. I'm also thinking of trying for the Same day change with united. not sure if that would affect the remaining flights in my itinerary, but that's for another thread. Thanks for your reassuring words!
