  • Asking about the layover time

I'm flying to Pittsburgh from Helsinki, FInland and have a layover in Dulles. Am booking the flights separately, since the most sensible way for me to travel is to do a Helsinki-Washington and then Wash-Pitts. I have a 2 hr 25 min layover in Washington, so is that enough time for me to go through immigration and get to my connecting flight? The

On two separate reservations that's a little bit difficult, but not impossible.

Flying from JAX to IAD to LIS on United with a 6-hour layover in IAD. Is it possible to spend an hour or two in DC and make it back in time for the flight to Lisbon. Thank you.

No, IAD is a long way from anything worth seeing.

I will need to go from terminal B (American airlines) to terminal C (United). Is an hour enough time and how do I get there?

B and C are just concourses, not terminals. If you don't have checked bags then you can just take the mobile lounge or AeroTrain from B to C. If you have checked bags and two separate reservations, then you don't have enough time.

  • IAD to BDL Layover

I have a layover arriving 4:20p from Cancun and departing 10:00p for BDL. Is there enough time to do anything?

No, that really isn't enough time to do anything.

Crap. I have to stay in the airport? *YAWNNNNNNNNN* I was hoping to hop onto the metrorail and just ride for awhile.

The metrorail doesn't go to the airport.

The thought of being stuck there for hours after customs doesn't make me happy. Just figured I could find SOMETHING to do.

If you have a long layover at IAD, you can go to the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum. Take the free shuttle bus over. It is great!

  • Luggage storage / onward checking (interlining) on a long layover?

I'm considering an itinerary where I arrive at IAD around 8:30 AM on Emirates, and have a 4:00 pm onward flight on Avianca. I'd like to go in to the city for a 2-3 hours. What can I do with my luggage during that time? Is there any storage facility open? WIll I be able to check in for my onward Avianca flight upon arrival at IAD?

There is no storage facility and getting back and forth from the city to IAD takes quite awhile I suggest not leaving the airport. The Avianca check in desk will likely not be open when you arrive.

  • Flight transit at IAD

Hi, I will have to connect from a domestic ANA (All Nippon Airways) flight to international ANA flight at IAD. Both flights are operated by United Airlines. Do I need to recheck my luggage? Is 1 hour enough to make the connection? Thanks.

You do not have to do anything with your baggage in IAD. There is no US Customs when exiting the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All gates are connected inside security. You should have enough time.

I will be traveling on Avianca from San Salvador to IAD- arriving at 2:20PM and plan to get on Swiss Airways flight to Zurich-leaving at at 5:45PM. I plan to carry-on luggage. Will there be enough time to make my connection?

Yes, with carry-ons only that should be enough time.

  • From UK (LHR) To IAD with a layover of 1hr 53 then on to NY (LGA)

Hi, First time to US and first time with a layover. Is 1hr53 enough time (Only carry-on, thank God) to get off the plane, go through border control, find the correct terminal and board the plane to NY?! Thanks in advance

That should be plenty of time. You should both arrive, go through US Immigration, customs, and security, and depart in the C/D concourse.

  • Transit time to Bogotá

Hi. I fly with United from Brussels to IAD and then I have a connection for Bogotá. Is 1 hour and 48 minutes layover sufficient? And do I need to check in my luggage again? Thanks

Yes, you will arrive in C/D, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate in Concourse B. Since United does not fly from IAD To Bogota, that means that flight is operated by Avianca. You have barely enough time.

Getting to IAD at 8:30am for outbound 5:40pm international flight... any ideas for getting thru the day with 5 & 12 year olds? Help please!

There's an aircraft museum near IAD named the Udvar-Hazy Center. The 12 year old might find that interesting, a 5 year old would probably get bored quickly.

Hi, I will fly in from Europe with United to IAD, and have a layover of 1.45 h to get a connection to MSY. Is this time feasible?

Yes, that is possible but leaves no time to spare for delays.

  • 1 hour & 10 min enough for transfer domestic - intl gate

Hi all, DFW/IAD/CPH UNITED / SAS. I have 1 ticket for my whole journey, will I need to go via security again in IAD when transferring from domestic to intl and will 1 hour and 10 min, be enough ??

No, you don't have to go through security again.

Thanks how much time do your need from moving from concourse d to b?

    About 15-20 minutes.

On my return flight back to the US, I will have 2 hours and 30 min in IAD before my domestic flight back to DFW. Will that be enough time to go via customs etc ?

Hi, I arrive at 8 pm and departs at 12 noon the next day. Appreciate advise on what I can do - some quick sightseeing.

By the time you get in nearly everything will be closing. Just get a hotel near the airport and get some rest.

we will reach IAD from Zurich (Switzerland) at 3.20pm (SWISS, operated by United, LX3200) and our flight to Nashville leaves at 5.05 pm (SWISS, operated by YV DBA united exp, UA 3993). Both flights are on the same ticket. Will this 1h 45min be enough to catch our flight to Nashville? Will we have to claim and re-check our bags? (We're Swiss citizens) Thank you!

Yes, you will arrive in Concourse C/D, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate, also in the C/D concourse. You should have enough time.

  • United just rescheduled a Dulles layover from 68 minutes to 35 mins

    1) arriving from Newark at 11:50am (UA 4859 regional commuter flight) Weds 12/30/15 2) departing to Savannah at 12:25pm (UA 3986 also commuter flight). This seems very tight for both 2 people and checked bags to make it to the connecting flight in time. Thinking a change will avoid a huge potential headache. Any thoughts appreciated.

It's possible, but doesn't leave much time to spare. Since it's an involuntary schedule change you could call United and ask to be rebooked on a nonstop Newark-Savannah flight. Stress that this was an involuntary schedule change.

Thank you - will give it a shot. We have a direct return flight already.
