i am flying from Istanbul, Turkey to IAD dulles and have 1 hour and 30 min as layover time to connect to my flight to SFO . Will i have to reclaim my bag and go through US customs?

Yes, you will arrive in the International Arrivals Building, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and take the Aerotrain to Concourse C where your flight to SFO will depart (assuming it is on United).

I was wondering if weather is a factor for United arriving on time from Canada. Does it have a good track record of being on time at the end of november?

The weather in Virginia is usually pretty good in November and IAD is not a congested airport.

  • connection time Mexico city- IAD- YOW

I would be flying from Mexico city to Ottawa, with a 1:45 layover in IAD (from 3:15 pm - 5:00pm) on December 23rd. Both flights are with United, and sold as one itinerary. Considering the high traffic expected at the start of the holidays, is 1:45 enough time to transit through? Final destination being Canada, would I still have to do US customs and immigration, and security in IAD? (I've read for flights to Canada, it can be done upon arrival in Canada, and not in the US). Should I look for a flight with more layover time?

Upon arrival in IAD you will go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, and re-check your baggage with United at the transfer desk. Then you will go through security and proceed to your departure gate. 1:45 should be enough time for your connection. You will go through Canadian Immigration and Customs when you get to Ottawa.

And this would probably all be in concourse C or D? Or would my international arrival from Mexico bring me to a completely different area?

Yes, it should all be in C/D. There's a chance your flight to Ottawa will depart from concourse A. In that case you would take the Aerotrain to concourse A after re-entering C/D after security.

    Thanks for the details!

I am making connection from ottawa to johannesburgn through Dulles but it is NOT on same reservation. How much time to make connection to SAA without it being too stressful?

I would leave at least 2 hours, preferably a little more just to be safe.

Landing@ IAD 20:40 and connection takes off at 21:55 is that suffecient for going through immigration control? ( EU cititzin) both flights are United

You do not go through US Immigration when leaving the US. All you have to do in IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time.

i am flying in from ottawa to dulles and have 1 hour and 10 min as layover time to connect to my flight to Bahrain. Will i have to reclaim my bag and go through US customs? what is the procedure? will i have enough time?..i am landing at 8:45 pm

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Ottawa. Your arrival into IAD will be like a domestic flight. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in concourse A, it is connected to concourse C or D where your flight to Bahrain will depart by the mobile lounge and Aerotrain. You have enough time.

HI, I am flying from YUL to CLT thru IAD... and i only have a 46 min connection... will I make it? what is the process?

All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in concourse A and depart from Concourse C or D, A is connected to C and D by the mobile lounge and aerotrain. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal.

Thank you! how long before our flight in YUL.. do you recommend to get to airport.. since we clear immigration & customs in canada

    Probably 90 minutes

I have a CLE-IAD landing in IAD at 9:00pm, and my IAD-LHR flight takes off at 9:50pm. Will I make my connection? Thanks!

    Both flights are United

Yes, that should be plenty of time. If you arrive in concourse A, you can take the mobile lounge or Aerotrain to C/D where your flight to LHR will depart.

CLE-IAD is an ERJ145. I read your comments below and saw it should arrive at A. Thank you for the quick reply!!

How do I get from terminal 4 to terminal 3?

Washington Dulles does not have a Terminal 3 or Terminal 4. It only has one Terminal.

Hi I'm flying from LHR - MCO with a stop over of 1hr 20 in IAD. I've booked the flights together through expedia and its all flying with United. Do I have enough time to make the connecting flight?

That is 10 minutes below the minimum connection time for International->Domestic at IAD. However, you have a good chance of making it since United has its own immigration and customs facility in the basement of its concourse.

Hello, I am flying from Ottawa to Copenhagen with transfer in Washington alone with my 3 month old baby. Do I need to collect my bags and recheck them? Also, is 1 hour enough time to make this connection?

You wil pre-clear US Immigration in Ottawa. Assuming you bought both flights on a single reservation, you do not have to do anything with your bags in Washington DC. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you for the fast reply. These were made under the same reservation, but the first fly(Ottawa-Washington) is with UNited Airlines and the second (Washington-Copenhagen) is with SAS a I still ok?

Yes, that's OK, in fact both of your flights will likely be in the same concourse building.

I am flying with my 84 year old mother on UA from GSP to IAD and connecting to Hong Kong, also on UA. Is 40 minutes enough time to make our connection and where do we need to go? She is mobile, but won't be able to run if need be. Should I get a wheel chair to speed things up?

United does not fly IAD to Hong Kong nonstop. Where are you flying first? Getting a wheel chair may not be a bad idea.

Sorry, flying IAD to Tokyo, then to HK. Flight from IAD to Tokyo departs at 12:20pm, my flight from GSP arrivies in IAD at 11:39 am. Only gives us 40 minutes. Enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time and you will likely have to take the aerotrain or mobile lounge from concourse A to Concourse C or D. It doesn't leave much time for delays either.
