i am flying in from ottawa to dulles and have 1 hour and 10 min as layover time to connect to my flight to Bahrain. Will i have to reclaim my bag and go through US customs? what is the procedure? will i have enough time?..i am landing at 8:45 pm

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Ottawa. Your arrival into IAD will be like a domestic flight. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in concourse A, it is connected to concourse C or D where your flight to Bahrain will depart by the mobile lounge and Aerotrain. You have enough time.

HI, I am flying from YUL to CLT thru IAD... and i only have a 46 min connection... will I make it? what is the process?

All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in concourse A and depart from Concourse C or D, A is connected to C and D by the mobile lounge and aerotrain. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal.

Thank you! how long before our flight in YUL.. do you recommend to get to airport.. since we clear immigration & customs in canada

    Probably 90 minutes

I have a CLE-IAD landing in IAD at 9:00pm, and my IAD-LHR flight takes off at 9:50pm. Will I make my connection? Thanks!

    Both flights are United

Yes, that should be plenty of time. If you arrive in concourse A, you can take the mobile lounge or Aerotrain to C/D where your flight to LHR will depart.

CLE-IAD is an ERJ145. I read your comments below and saw it should arrive at A. Thank you for the quick reply!!

How do I get from terminal 4 to terminal 3?

Washington Dulles does not have a Terminal 3 or Terminal 4. It only has one Terminal.

Hi I'm flying from LHR - MCO with a stop over of 1hr 20 in IAD. I've booked the flights together through expedia and its all flying with United. Do I have enough time to make the connecting flight?

That is 10 minutes below the minimum connection time for International->Domestic at IAD. However, you have a good chance of making it since United has its own immigration and customs facility in the basement of its concourse.

    FOR* NRT

Yes, that should be enough time. Both flights, assuming both are on United, will be on the C/D Concourse.

Hello, I am flying from Ottawa to Copenhagen with transfer in Washington alone with my 3 month old baby. Do I need to collect my bags and recheck them? Also, is 1 hour enough time to make this connection?

You wil pre-clear US Immigration in Ottawa. Assuming you bought both flights on a single reservation, you do not have to do anything with your bags in Washington DC. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you for the fast reply. These were made under the same reservation, but the first fly(Ottawa-Washington) is with UNited Airlines and the second (Washington-Copenhagen) is with SAS a I still ok?

Yes, that's OK, in fact both of your flights will likely be in the same concourse building.

only have one hour to transfer is this enough time with bags? is there a service I can buy?

No, that is not enough time. You should not have purchased that itinerary - you need to change it.

I am flying with my 84 year old mother on UA from GSP to IAD and connecting to Hong Kong, also on UA. Is 40 minutes enough time to make our connection and where do we need to go? She is mobile, but won't be able to run if need be. Should I get a wheel chair to speed things up?

United does not fly IAD to Hong Kong nonstop. Where are you flying first? Getting a wheel chair may not be a bad idea.

Sorry, flying IAD to Tokyo, then to HK. Flight from IAD to Tokyo departs at 12:20pm, my flight from GSP arrivies in IAD at 11:39 am. Only gives us 40 minutes. Enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time and you will likely have to take the aerotrain or mobile lounge from concourse A to Concourse C or D. It doesn't leave much time for delays either.

Hello, I will be flying in to Geneva on the 2nd of November from San Francisco via Dulles. Connection is 55 minutes. Is this enough time ? We will be traveling with an 11 months old baby. Do we need to pick up our luggage and check in again? We are of French nationality. Thank you

No, you will not have to do anything with your baggage. All you have to do in IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be on the C/D concourse. There is no US Immigration or Customs when leaving the country. You should have enough time as long as your first flight is on-time.

thank you very much for your answer!

  • LHR - IAD - LGA Connection time.

Hello i will be flying from LHR to IAD on the 12/17/14 with united and i have a connection time of 1 hour 15 minutes is this enough time to check a bag and then catch the connection while clearing customs and also going through security again? and if the i know i will struggle to make it if customs lines are long is there anything i can do?

Your first consideration will be the baggage transfer. If you bought the your trip on one ticket, or your two airlines have a code-share agreement - your bags will automatically be transferred; if such is not the case, you would need to take your bag and re-check it in with your connecting flight. While at least 2 hrs are suggested for international arrivals procedures, you may be able to make the transfer quicker if you arrive during non-peak hours. Connections are a bit more complicated at IAD - therefore, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, indicating transfer options, airlines & gates, etc.

1 hr 15 minutes International -> Domestic on United at LGA is doable but difficult. If you miss your connection there are other flights from IAD to LGA or Newark.

I am taking United from LAX Rome, and need to transfer at IAD and layover is only 1 hr. Does anyone know if I have to go through custom and grab luggages and check in my luggage again? Is one hr enough? I am not sure how busy IAD is, and also if I will in the same terminal. Thank you

You do not have to go through US Customs on your way out of the US. You do not have to do anything with your baggage. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be on the C/D concourse. You should have enough time.

I have another option of connecting in Toronto YYZ, should I go with IAD or YYZ. Anyone have experience of connection flights from YYZ to Europe?

YYZ will be more complex and difficult.

Hi thanks for your comment. Do you know anything about New Jersey Newark airport then? That's another option besides DC. This is my first time doing connecting flight; what's the min. connecting time I should allow? Thanks

EWR would be fairly easy since both flights would be in Terminal C, but EWR is much more delay-prone than IAD. The procedure is very simple, all you need to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate when you're leaving the country, so really all you need is 30-45 minutes.

  • LGA --> IAD --> SAN on United Airlines
    Sep 25, 2014

Can someone help: What terminal does United Airlines usually use flying from LGA --> IAD --> SAN? There's a 1h18 stopover, and the passenger has speaks very limited English. We want to prepare ahead of time as much as possible. Any comments would be helpful.

IAD only has one terminal. LGA-IAD will arrive at Concourse A if it's an ERJ-145 or CRJ-200 and will arrive at Concourse C or D if it's a CRJ-700. C/D is connected to A by the mobile lounge and aerotrain. The SAN flight will depart from C or D.

The technical specs you share give me confidence that you know what you're talking about - thank you for your response. Staying in the same terminal makes it immeasurably easier, a relief.

I will be traveling from SFO on United Airlines (Most likely will land on terminal D ) and have only 2 hours to catch another international flight on Saudi Airlines ( which will probably depart from terminal A). Is that enough time? if yes, would you please describe the steps? I will be traveling light with no checked bags, hopefully this will help. Thank you very much

A and D aren't terminals - they are concourses. If you already have your Saudi boarding pass all you have to do is take the AeroTrain or Mobile Lounge from concourse C/D to concourse A. If you don't already have your boarding pass you will take the AeroTrain or Mobile Lounge to the main terminal, exit security, go up to the check-in level, and check in with Saudi, then go through security and take the AeroTrain to concourse A.

Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately, I wont be able to print out the boarding pass for the international flight, I will have to get it from the check-in counter. Does 2-hours connection time seem sufficient to complete the latter procedure you described above? or you would consider it risky? Thanks again for your kind help.

Yes, with no checked bags 2 hours should be enough time. However, it doesn't leave much room for any possible delays.
