  • Flying to IAD from Frankfurt

Hi, My sister is flying from Frankfurt to IAD tomorrow (flight 933, arrives in IAD at 8.10pm); she has a tourist visa and a bag that she will check in. Her next flight is IAD to San Francisco (flight 1235) that departs IAD at 9.50pm. Are there any tips for her to make it ok? As I understood from reading other posts, she will have to get her luggage and then check it in again? Her tickets were purchased together. Thanks so much! This forum is really helpful!

  • Flying in from Toronto to IAD and connecting to Aruba

We are a large group of 16 family members flying out on New Years day to Aruba, connecting in Washington. We are flying with United, on one ticket. We have only 50 min connection time. Should I be worried.

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If your flight from Toronto is on-time you will have plenty of time.

  • Flying in from San Diego and going through to Toronto

Hey there, I fly in from San Diego and arrive in IAD at 9:05 Pm. I then need to catch my flight to Toronto which leaves at 10:08 PM. Is this enough time? I'm just not sure if I need to go through customs/immigration and re-check in bags when I arrive in IAD. Thanks!

You do not go through US Immigration when leaving the US. All you have to di is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

I am arriving at IAD from seould korea at 9:50 AM on Jan 25th. My connecting flight to buffalo is at 12:31pm by united airlines. Will i make it on time??

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

I have to go through US custom and find baggage and re check with United airlines right? And will i be go through us custom quick enough? I am not us citizen.

Yes, you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Washington, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Yes, you have enough time.

  • Cutting it close?

Hey there! I'm not very experienced at this so any extra detail/tip would be welcome. My connection is from Munich-15:30 (Lufthansa) to Atlanta-17:43 (Delta). How short am I on time? Will I need to wait for my luggage on the conveyor belt thing and have it checked and re-checked again? If I do miss it, will they re-book my flight or will I need to buy a new ticket? Will warning the airport staff in advance help? And lastly, would it be helpful to ask airport staff for help or am I better off just figuring stuff out on my own? Your time will be very much appreciated, thank you!

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage to go through US Customs. If you purchased your tickets together and your bags are tagged through to Atlanta you can re-check them at the transfer desk after you go through customs. Otherwise you will have to take them to the Delta counter on the departure level of the terminal and pay a checked bag fee. You should have enough time.

Thanks ZAP! They were purchased separately, so I assume there is no way of making them tagged no. Would you kindly also comment on the ticket re-book possibility? Thanks.

Yes, since you purchased separate tickets you will have to take them to the delta ticket counter to re-check them. If you do miss your connection, since you purchased separate tickets, you will have to stand by for the next flight with availability and may have to pay a fee in order to do so.

I am flying to Dulles with US Airways and land at 3:40pm from Charlotte, NC and flying to South Africa with South African airways at 5:40pm. Is this enough time to collect bags, get to the gate etc?? Do you know which terminals/concourses these different flights land at and fly from?

Did you purchase your tickets together or separately? if you purchased together you will not have to claim your bags at Dulles and only walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both be in the A/B concourse building. If you did book two separate tickets, you still probably have enough time, but you have to hurry. IAD only has one terminal.

They were purchased separately. Would you have to exit the gates into the main terminal to collect bags and then check-in, in the main terminal and then go to your gate? Do they have check in desks for connections?

You will have to go to the main terminal, claim your bags, go up to the departure level and to the SAA counter to re-check them. You will be hard-pressed to do that in time, but I think it is possible. However, one other thing you can try is bring your SAA confirmation along when you check your bags with US Airways in Charlotte. They may be able to check your bags through to South Africa for you as US Airways and SAA do have an interline baggage agreement.

  • Domestic Arrival to International Departure

Will be arriving from Denver, CO at 8:39pm leaving for Dubai at 10:15pm. How easy/difficult is it to get from the domestic arrivals gates to the international departures gates? Will this be sufficient time?

IAD does not have separate "domestic" and "international" departure gates. If both of your flights are on United they will both be in the C/D concourse, which is one long building. You have plenty of time.

  • 1 hr 45 min US Air to Ethiopian Airlines
    Nov 28, 2014

I arrive at 8:45 AM on US Air. I will not check my luggage on either flight. My Ethiopian Airlines flight is at 10:30 AM. Is this enough time? These are 2 separate flights, not connecting flights. EA says to arrive 4 hrs before the flight. This US Air flight is the only one available unless I leave the night before. Thanks

It will be difficult. Since you can't check in for your Ethiopian flight online you will have to exit security to go to the Ethiopian counter, which may be closed by that time. I would fly in the night before if you have already purchased the Ethiopian flight.

  • Connection concerns

I am flying into Dulles on UA at 7:23 AM. I am flying to India with Emirates, departing at 10:10 AM. Is this sufficient time to collect our bags, transport to the international terminal & check our bags, etc...?

Yes, that is enough time. IAD does not have a separate International Terminal so don't worry about that.

    Thank you so very much!

  • 39 Mins from New Orleans to London Heathrow
    Nov 18, 2014

Going back home, this seems tight but UA say this is a 'legal connection' and it will be a case of walking from one gate to another and our bags will be transferred automatically. However, I thought the gate for an international flight closes 30 mins prior to take off? That leaves me 9 mins to get off plane and tothe correct gate. Flight numbers are UA1247 and then UA4 to London. Should I reschedule?

International flights close 10 minutes prior to departure, not 30. It is a legal connection, but obviously leaves little to no time to spare. If you are not already on the last flight to London I would leave it because if you miss it you can just be rebooked.

Thanks again. It will be for the last flight home that day. There is an earlier flight from nola but will cost 130gbp per ticket to change

  • London Heathrow to New Orleans via Washington Dulles

I have a connecting flight with only 70 mins to change. Flight number is UA123 connecting with UA3797 (Mesa Airlines/United Express). I have ESTA. How long will immigration, customs, bag collect and hand back etc take. Am I cutting this very fine? Scheduled arrival time at IAD is 11.20.

70 minutes is possible, but it is well below the published minimum connection time of 90 minutes

Thanks. Suppose it depends on luck. I see that the plane often lands early. Apart from today when it was late. Is this one a 'legal connection'

  • Connection time 35 mn to board for Frankfurt Germany
    Nov 18, 2014

Hello, Do you think 35 mn is sufficient to change planes? Fom flight UA1237 from LAX to UA989 to Frankfurt?

Yes, it is enough time but it leaves no time to spare in case of delays.

  • 40 min connection enough time?
    Nov 18, 2014

I have a connection time of 40 min in IAD. I am flying United for both flights. Will this be enough time? Any suggestions to make sure I make it to the next gate?

Yes, that should be enough time. Familiarize yourself with the terminal layout and move quickly.

I've been studying it all week! Hah thank you!

  • Connection time from International to domestic flight
    Nov 13, 2014

HI Guys, I will be arriving at IAD from Brazil on January 6 at 645am and my next flight is 811am to MCO. 1h45min is sufficient to do everything I need (immiigrations, bag check, etc..)?!

It will be both UAL flights...sorry

Yes, that should be enough time. Your flight will be the only international flight arriving at that time so the immigration lines should be short.

arriving from a international flight means that I will need to walk a lot until the domestic gate?! thanks

Probably not - United has an immigration facility in the basement of Concourse C and your flight to MCO will likely depart from that building as well. Since you do have an early morning arrival, you may go through Immigration at the International Arrivals building instead, in which case a train will take you to your departure concourse after you clear customs.

  • Connection and general procedure after international flight
    Nov 9, 2014

Hi everybody I'm going on a flight from Munich, Germany (MUC) to Providence, RI, USA (PVD) and connect in Washington Dulles (IAD). My connection time is 1 hr and 25 mins. Is that enough time to catch the flight with everything I have to do (immigration etc.), also what exactly is all that I have to do, like what are the steps? (note that I am from Germany and hold a visa, if that makes any difference) Thanks in advance!

    I forgot : I'll have a checked bag!

As an international arrival you will be processed in the Main Terminal of IAD (passport check, pick up bag, go through customs clearance & re-check-in bag where indicated). If you booked both flights separately (instead of on one ticket) you need to check with your airline if they will transfer your bag - if not you need to re-check it in at your connecting airline desk before proceeding to your next flight. For A/B gate connections you can walk to Midfield Concourse A/B or take train; For C gates at Midfield Concourse C/D you need to take the train; for D gates you need to take the shuttle bus after customs clearance. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS & scroll down to the detailed text. Your time should be sufficient.

sunov is incorrect. If your flight from Munich is on United you will arrive in the C concourse and go through US Immigration in United's facility there. You will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk if they are tagged through to PVD. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate.

Yes, my flight is with United and it's all on one ticket! Thank you!!
