  • 1 hr 45 min US Air to Ethiopian Airlines

I arrive at 8:45 AM on US Air. I will not check my luggage on either flight. My Ethiopian Airlines flight is at 10:30 AM. Is this enough time? These are 2 separate flights, not connecting flights. EA says to arrive 4 hrs before the flight. This US Air flight is the only one available unless I leave the night before. Thanks

It will be difficult. Since you can't check in for your Ethiopian flight online you will have to exit security to go to the Ethiopian counter, which may be closed by that time. I would fly in the night before if you have already purchased the Ethiopian flight.

I am flying into Dulles on UA at 7:23 AM. I am flying to India with Emirates, departing at 10:10 AM. Is this sufficient time to collect our bags, transport to the international terminal & check our bags, etc...?

Yes, that is enough time. IAD does not have a separate International Terminal so don't worry about that.

    Thank you so very much!

  • 39 Mins from New Orleans to London Heathrow

Going back home, this seems tight but UA say this is a 'legal connection' and it will be a case of walking from one gate to another and our bags will be transferred automatically. However, I thought the gate for an international flight closes 30 mins prior to take off? That leaves me 9 mins to get off plane and tothe correct gate. Flight numbers are UA1247 and then UA4 to London. Should I reschedule?

International flights close 10 minutes prior to departure, not 30. It is a legal connection, but obviously leaves little to no time to spare. If you are not already on the last flight to London I would leave it because if you miss it you can just be rebooked.

Thanks again. It will be for the last flight home that day. There is an earlier flight from nola but will cost 130gbp per ticket to change

I have a connecting flight with only 70 mins to change. Flight number is UA123 connecting with UA3797 (Mesa Airlines/United Express). I have ESTA. How long will immigration, customs, bag collect and hand back etc take. Am I cutting this very fine? Scheduled arrival time at IAD is 11.20.

70 minutes is possible, but it is well below the published minimum connection time of 90 minutes

Thanks. Suppose it depends on luck. I see that the plane often lands early. Apart from today when it was late. Is this one a 'legal connection'

  • Connection time 35 mn to board for Frankfurt Germany

Hello, Do you think 35 mn is sufficient to change planes? Fom flight UA1237 from LAX to UA989 to Frankfurt?

Yes, it is enough time but it leaves no time to spare in case of delays.

  • 40 min connection enough time?

I have a connection time of 40 min in IAD. I am flying United for both flights. Will this be enough time? Any suggestions to make sure I make it to the next gate?

Yes, that should be enough time. Familiarize yourself with the terminal layout and move quickly.

I've been studying it all week! Hah thank you!

  • Connection time from International to domestic flight

HI Guys, I will be arriving at IAD from Brazil on January 6 at 645am and my next flight is 811am to MCO. 1h45min is sufficient to do everything I need (immiigrations, bag check, etc..)?!

It will be both UAL flights...sorry

Yes, that should be enough time. Your flight will be the only international flight arriving at that time so the immigration lines should be short.

arriving from a international flight means that I will need to walk a lot until the domestic gate?! thanks

Probably not - United has an immigration facility in the basement of Concourse C and your flight to MCO will likely depart from that building as well. Since you do have an early morning arrival, you may go through Immigration at the International Arrivals building instead, in which case a train will take you to your departure concourse after you clear customs.

  • Connection and general procedure after international flight

Hi everybody I'm going on a flight from Munich, Germany (MUC) to Providence, RI, USA (PVD) and connect in Washington Dulles (IAD). My connection time is 1 hr and 25 mins. Is that enough time to catch the flight with everything I have to do (immigration etc.), also what exactly is all that I have to do, like what are the steps? (note that I am from Germany and hold a visa, if that makes any difference) Thanks in advance!

    I forgot : I'll have a checked bag!

As an international arrival you will be processed in the Main Terminal of IAD (passport check, pick up bag, go through customs clearance & re-check-in bag where indicated). If you booked both flights separately (instead of on one ticket) you need to check with your airline if they will transfer your bag - if not you need to re-check it in at your connecting airline desk before proceeding to your next flight. For A/B gate connections you can walk to Midfield Concourse A/B or take train; For C gates at Midfield Concourse C/D you need to take the train; for D gates you need to take the shuttle bus after customs clearance. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS & scroll down to the detailed text. Your time should be sufficient.

sunov is incorrect. If your flight from Munich is on United you will arrive in the C concourse and go through US Immigration in United's facility there. You will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk if they are tagged through to PVD. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate.

Yes, my flight is with United and it's all on one ticket! Thank you!!

  • connection time - YTZ - IAD - LAX - MEL

Is there enough time at IAD to make this connection? Canadian, will have checked bags to collect. Is the check-in for UA1465 (IAD-LAX) considered domestic or international? IAD-LAX-MEL was booked as one ticket. Which minimum checkin times apply? PD725: YTZ - IAD (arr 2:20pm) - 2h34m connection - UA1465: IAD (dep 4:54pm) - LAX (arr 7:40pm) UA98: LAX (dep 10:30pm) - MEL

You should have enough time. Once you clear customs in IAD you will just have to go up to the departure level and check your bags with United.

    Thanks.

  • Connection time from YOW to SJO via Dulles IAD

I'm flying on a Sunday morning in January from Ottawa YOW to San Jose, Costa Rica via Dulles IAD. Is 1 hour 8 minutes enough time to make the connection?! Help!

Yes, that should be enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Ottawa. In IAD all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in concourse A you can take the Aerotrain to your departure in C/D.

Hi I am landing from Johannesburg to Dulles IAD at 6:25 from united airlines operated by Southafrican airways SA 207 and my Connecting flight is at 8:16 am to Minneapolis. Will that be enough time to go through immigration, claim baggage and hand over to connecting flight. By chance if i miss the flight will United put me in another flight ? Thanks,

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in concourse B and be taken to the International Arrivals Building by the mobile lounge. You will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Then you will go through security and take the Aerotrain to your departure concourse. If you do miss your flight you will be rebooked.

  • Transfer time:1h 06m, Domestic to International

hi I have the following schedule Flight 8930: SFO to IAD arrives Thu 4:44p, the connection flight is Flight 8802: IAD to Brussels departs Thu 5:50p. I have 1h 06m transfer time. Both the flights are by Brussels Airlines, and I bought as a single ticket Is this possible to catch the connection flight ? Thanks Kumaran

Actually, both of your flights will be operated by United Airlines. Yes, that is enough time. Both flights will be on the C/D concourse. All you have to do in IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Hi, I am flying from Atlanta to IAD and then going on to Dublin. Connection time at IAD is 1h5m. (Both flights are United). Is this time sufficient? Would I have to change terminals at IAD? I do not have any checked in baggage?

Yes, that is enough time. IAD only has one terminal. Both of your flights should be on the C/D concourse, but if you happen to arrive in the A concourse, you will take the Aerotrain to C/D.

    Thank you so much!

  • Connecting to London LHR

I am flying to London LHR, departing from Charleston WV on United with a plane transfer on to Lufthansa through Washington IAD. I have 55 mins to connect between carriers. The ticket was purchased as one trip. Will I need to go through customs in Washington before connection? will there be enough time? Will I need to collect my luggage from the United flight and re-check it into Lufthansa after customs clearance? Can I walk between terminals, or will I need to catch the bus?

Only international arrivals need to go through customs. You will arrive at Midfield Concourse C and need to get to Concourse B - look for the Aerotrain sign, which will take you to the B gates B35--B79. You have enough time.

Actually, you will likely arrive in Concourse A which is directly connected to Concourse B. As sunov mentioned, you do not go through US CUstoms when leaving the United States.

Thanks for feedback. That all helps. I assume then that I will not need to collect my luggage, and United will transfer the bags between the two carriers since it is an alliance partnership?

    Yes, that is correct.

I will be leaving from YQB, going to SJO, but i have to connect trough EWR (11h connection, overnight stay) and then IAD. I only have 1h45 to go through IAD, what is the process that I will have to go trough? I am flying with United all all airports. Do I have to re-check my baggage somewhere? Where do I go through customs?

I am wrong, actually I have 1h25 to go through IAD

You will go through US Immigration and Customs when you arrive in Newark. In IAD all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will likely arrive in concourse A, which is connected to concourse C/D where your SJO flight will depart by the Aerotrain and mobile lounge.
