I have an itinerary offered by United with a 45 minute domestic connection from Ethiopian Air (arriving from ADDIS ABABA with fuel stop in Dublin. Do us bound pax on the inbound flight go thru USA entry in Dublin? Seems the only way the connection is possible.

It is erroneous. The Ethiopian flight does not do pre-clearance in Dublin so that connection would be not possible. The United website probably assumes it does however (because all other flights from Dublin to the US do) and that is why it is selling that connection as possible when it is not.

Thank you, but I wonder that United operating these flights daily would offer such an itinerary directly to me on their own reservations site.

Remember that the Ethiopian flight is not operated by United and that the IT people don't have the ability to check every single offered connection to make sure it is valid - there are literally millions of possible connections.

I'm flying United from Brasil to Aruba with a connecting flight in Washington DC airport. I have 1 1/2 hour lay over. Will I be ok? Do I need to go through customs and immigration there, or can I do thise procedures in Aruba?

at IAD you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. All of this will be in the C/D concourse. You should have enough time.

is 50 minutes between landing and take off enough time to change gates for United flights in IAD? the outbound flight is international and states we should check in 30 minutes ahead of take off. Our inbound flight to IAD is the first morning flight of the day. I would hope it would be on time. Weather looks OK as well.

That should be enough time. All gates in Dulles are connected inside security and you will be checked in for both flights at your origin. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Just booked London heathrow to Orlando Easter Weekend 2016 via Expedia with United Airlines we have a connection at Washington IAD arriving IAD 20.50, connecting flight leaves at 22.00 giving us just an hour and 20 minutes! will this be enough time to get through customs collect baggage and be on time for check in?? And if we miss our connection will United Airlines cover cost of changing flight?

It's possible because you're arriving in IAD so late in the evening, but it does leave little time to spare if the inbound flight is delayed. If you miss your connection they will rebook you on the next flight but it will not be until the next day.

Thank you. Will our luggage be forwarded to the domestic flight as the flights are one purchase? or will we have to collect baggage and check it in again? This obviously affects our timescale, bit worried as don't want to be in airport overnight!

You will claim your baggage, take it through US Customs, and immediately re-check it at the re-check desk right after.

I have 40 minutes between flights in IAD arrive from Jacksonville and depart to Dubai United airlines both legs. Same terminal? Will I make it?

IAD only has one terminal. Both flights should be on the C/D concourse. You should have enough time if your flight from Jacksonville is on-time, but it leaves little time to spare in case of a delay.

My wife and I are US citizens and will be flying into Dulles on Nov. 23 at 3:25 pm on United and departing at 5:05 pm to Mexico City on United (same ticket). Has United allowed enough time to make the connection? Do through international passengers leave security or go through customs at Dulles? If so do they make any allowances for passengers with short connection time? Thanks for your help!

Where are you flying into Dulles from?

Sorry - we are coming in from Munich, Germany.

So , yes, you will arrive in the C/D concourse and go to United's immigration facility there, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk and go through a dedicated security line, after which you will still be in the C/D concourse where your departure gate to Mexico City will be. You should have enough time as long as your flight from Munich is on-time.

    Thanks so much Zap!

  • From Beijing, connecting at IAD, arriving Raleigh

I am deciding to buy a ticket from Beijing to Raleigh by United. United 88 arrives at IAD at 5:50 PM, United 4453 departs at 8:12 PM. That gives 2h22m; will that be enough for a non-US citizen or green card holder? I suppose I need to claim baggage, pass border control and recheck baggage.

    That should be enough time.

Hi, i have the following question: i want to book a flight from nashville bna that would arrive in IAD Washington at 16:20 wth United and then catch an Airfrance flight to Paris at 18;40 pm. Is that enough buffer time between the two flights?

With checked baggage it would be possible but not leave any time to spare if there was a delay. Without checked baggage it should be possible. Why don't you just buy one ticket?

Hi, on Nov 12 am flying with United from Atlanta to Washington to Frankfurt. Transit time in Washington Dulles is only 40 minutes. Will this be enough to catch the flight to Frankfurt? Flight is at 22:00, so if I miss it, I will most likely be stuck in Washington airport for the night. Thanks for your comments!

That is enough time if the flight from Atlanta arrives on-time. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

I am flying virgin atlantic London Heathrow to Washington IAD on 30th December to land in IAD at 14:35. My flight to Phoenix on United is due to depart at 17:55 ... i'll need to collect and re-check my luggage as it's a different airline booked on different tickets. Will this give me enough time to make my next flight? I've been told that international flight arrivals can take up to 3 hours to get through customs, giving me only 45 minutes to re-check, go through security, and make my next flight. Looking for peace of mind.

That should be enough time. It's rare for Immigration and customs to take more than an hour. 3 Hours is complete nonsense.

Thanks ZAP... I thought it sounded a little strange. Even if it takes an hour and my baggage takes another 30 minutes, i would assume 90 minutes would be enough to time to check in a bag and go through security for a domestic flight?

Just trying to gauge some peace of mind as in the message below you said at least 3 hours is required for that transfer and mine, albeit different airlines, is logistically the same process, where you said 3 hours is complete nonsense. Appreciate the advice

Yes, 3 hours is the TOTAL time (from scheduled arrival to scheduled departure). The Immigration and customs process shouldn't take more than 60-90 minutes. Also, that person is coming from Saudi Arabia and connecting to Frontier, which is often understaffed, both of which can make the connection longer.

I'm coming from Saudi Arabia with Saudia airlines arriving to IAD at 12:20 pm and I have purchased a separate ticket for Orland FL with Frontier airlines at 2:09 pm. Will this be enough time to go through immigration and checkout the luggage and recheck with the flight to Orlando? If it is not enough how much time do I need? Please not the flight is on 30 December 2015

This is unlikely enough time. I recommend at least 3 hours for that transfer.

I'LL BE TRAVELING FROM PANAMA CITY, ARRIVING AT IAD AT 14:11. ON A COPA FLIGHT; AND I AM PLANING TO CONTINUE MY TRAVEL TO MONTREAL ON A PORTER FLIGHT THAT DEPARTS IAD AT 16:00. I WONDER IF THIS 1:45 MIN WILL BE FINE TO GO THRUGH INMIGRATION, CUSTOMS AND RECHECKING MY LUGAGE.

Since it's two separate itineraries that will be very difficult to make in time.

I fly from Copenhagen to Las Vegas I have a connecting flight from IAD to LAS Intervening time of 2:20 hrs Is it enough ? thanks

As long as both tickets are on the same reservation that should be enough time. You will arrive in the International arrivals building, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags, go through security, and to your departure gate.

Thank you very much If I only take hand luggage to reduce duration of transit, is this possible on this type of flight?

Yes, only taking hand luggage will make it easier.

  • Dublin Ireland to Cancun

We are traveling from Dublin to Cancun with united have 90 minutes between flights. is this enough and can I book my bags direct from Dublin to Cancun. also coming back about the same transfer time. Will the bags be booked directly through

On your way to Cancun you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. Assuming all tickets are on the same reservation you won't have to do anything with your bags in Washington. On your return, in Washington you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk and go through security. On your way to Cancun you should have plenty of time and on your way back to Dublin you should have just enough time to connect in Washington.

Many thanks for your help. Checked again and we have 2 hours on the way back so all should be good. Thanks Again

I am flying from Ottawa to Beijing with stop-over in Washington Dulles Airport. I have only 50 minutes to transit with United Airlines. (i) will 50 minutes be ok for me to catch the next flight? Do I need to pick up my luggage at IAD and then check-in again?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Ottawa. You don't have to do anything with your bags in IAD. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your flight from Ottawa is on-time.
