  • Domestic to International - Re-check Bags?
    Aug 22, 2013
Thank you all for your help, wonderful site. On 8/30, arrive from ATL on DL2032 at 7:25. Connecting to BA292 to LHR at 10:30. I believe both airlines use Terminal A, however I booked each flight separately - do I have to exit terminal, claim baggage and re-check it on BA before coming back through security? I assume this would be the case and so gave myself 3 hours connection time to be safe. Thanks again!

Yes, you will have to claim your bags from Delta and take them to BA and go back through security. You should have enough time.

IAD has one main passenger terminal with Z gates and Midfield Concourses A through D. Both Delta & British use Concourse B; however as you have separate tickets and your airlines do not belong to the same Airline Alliance, you need, on arrival, head for the main terminal's baggage claim by means of a moving walkway. After re-checking in your bag at the British Airways counter, go through security check and take either the moving walkway or the AeroTrain back to 'Midfield Concourse A/B' (B gates: B35-B79). You have plenty of time.

    Thankyou thaug13, I appreciate it!

    Much appreciated ZP, thanks!

  • Connection question
    Aug 19, 2013
I fly into Dulles on FRi from Portland Me via trans state airlines dab United Express. My connection to Lwb Greenbrier is 42 min via silver airways dba United express. Will I have enough time

Yes, both flights will likely be in Concourse A.

  • change terminals?
    Aug 17, 2013
Flying United airlines from Houston Intercontinental Airport and catching United airlines flight to Greenbrier WV (LWB) will i have to change terminals?

At IAD, United uses Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates (i.e., C30). Your boarding pass & overhead screens on arrival should indicate your connecting flight & gate number. I strongly suggest that you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, paying attention to 'International Arrivals' (if applicable), Midfield Concourses and their gates & how to connect.

You will arrive in concourse C/D and depart from A. IAD only has one "terminal". You can take the Aerotrain or mobile lounge between concourses.

  • Connection time query
    Aug 14, 2013
Hi there! Any advice muchly appreciated - I fly into IAD on 21st December from Machester, UK. I need to make a connecting flight to Kansas City and I only have a 90 minute layover. My flight arrives at 3.25pm, but because its the last weekend before Christmas, I thought maybe the airport might be busier than usual and immigration may hold me up. Both flights are United flights so I dont know if my baggage will check all the way through or if i need to collect etc? The problem is that if i miss the connection, there is not another flight to Kansas that day so it would be a real problem.

Yes, you will have to collect your baggage in immigration and re-check it with United after clearing customs. You will probably have enough time. If you do miss your connection, yeah, it will suck but at least United has a flight to Kansas City at 6:30 AM the next morning so you at least wouldn't have to wait THAT long.

  • Halifax Stanfield International airport (YHZ) -- Washington (IAD)
    Aug 14, 2013
I fly into Washington IAD at 11:04 AM. My layover is only 1 hr, 16 mins before departing to Tokyo. Is this enough time? Does anyone have any knowledge of what terminal my Tokyo flight is likely to be at? Can someone give a brief walk-through of what I will need to do coming off my flight and catching the next one?

You will arrive in D. If your flight to Tokyo is on United it will depart from C or D, which is connected and if it is on B, which you can take the mobile lounge or aerotrain to. You should have enough time.

The flight to tokyo is with All Nippon Airways. You mention the aerotrain but the airport website states that international flight passengers are not able to use the aerotrain...Its good to here I will have time though!

You aren't coming on a true international flight - you preclear US immigration in Halifax, so your arrival in Washington DC is like a domestic flight.

  • From domestic to international with dog as baggage
    Aug 9, 2013
I'm flying on 10/31/13 with Mesa Airlines (UA376) from San Antonio, to connect with SAS SK926 to Copenhagen. My dog will be checked in on both flights as baggage. Connect time is 1:55 hrs. Will both my dog & I have good chances to make the SAS flight?

Yes, that should be enough time to make your connection.

  • making a connection
    Aug 8, 2013
I am flying fron San Francisco on Aug 15th, arriving in Washington IAD at 9:05pn connecting to Morgantown at 9:50pm. Is that enough time to make the connection and how far is it between the arrival terminal and the departure ternial

You will arrive in C or D and depart from A. If you arrive in D take the mobile lounge in between D and A and if you arrive in C take the Aerotrain.

  • Time Between Plane Connections
    Aug 8, 2013
I will arrive at Dulles at 7:27 am from Richmond, VA on Aug 13 and will only have 30 minutes to catch my next flight to Portland, ME at 7:57 am. Will this give me enough time?

Both of those flights operated by United Express will likely be in Concourse A. You should have enough time.

  • Time between plane connections
    Aug 7, 2013
I arrive at IAD on a United flight at 8:52 pm on August 13 and connect to a Lufthansa flight at 10:00 pm. That is just over an hour is that enough time to make the Lufthansa flight.

Yes, your Lufthansa flight will depart from Concourse B. If you tell me your United flight number I can help you with where it will arrive, but generally United "Mainline" and large regional jet United Express flights arrive in C or D and United Express small regional jets and prop planes arrive in A.

  • Atlanta to London
    Aug 6, 2013
Hi there, on my return leg from Atlanta to London Heathrow I have a 1hr42 connection in the airport. Arriving at 1653 on Virgin Atlantic flight (operated by Delta) then leaving 1835 with Virgin Atlantic. Would the bags need to be rechecked or would they just be handed over? And is this enough time?

Virgin Atlantic & Delta code-share, meaning you need not worry about baggage transfer. Where you arrive is determined by the operating airline - in your case Delta, which uses the B gates. Virgin Atlantic has no London listing at IAD site, however it uses the A gates Both A & B are in the Midfield Concourse A/B - you can walk over to your connecting gate and have plenty of time.

  • Domestic to int'l connecting flight
    Aug 15, 2013
Will 1:34 be enough time to get my connecting flight outta iAd Dulles to GRU São Paulo? Im flying us airways into Dulles then Tam into São Paulo then into porto seguro. I think I just need to get my next ticket then head to the gate. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

IAD has neither a listing of TAM, nor Sao Paulo (GRU - Guarulhos). Is it possible that this is a code-share flight - your booking details should state " (Airline name) - operated by TAM". As both US Airways & TAM are in the same Star Alliance your 'Airline name' most likely is U.S. Airways. U.S. Airways uses Concourse Z, which is attached to the right of the main Terminal. Your ticket and the overhead screens on arrival will indicate flight and gate number. If gate is other than Z, you will need to take The AeroTrain or use moving walkways to A&B gates. D gates are not served by the Train, but by a shuttle departing outside of A gates (gate A6). C gates are connected by tunnel to D gates). I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Yes my first flight is us airways outta Providence to IAD operated by gojet airways dba united express & IAD to São Paulo (GRU) is Tam operated by united airlines. Will I just need to go checkin in and go to my gate at IAD? And is 1:34 enough time? Thanks

Both of your flights will be on United Express/United. You will just have go go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Washington Dulles. Both will be in the C/D concourse. You have enough time. Your bags will be checked through to Sao Paulo.

Great thanks so much guys! Appreciate the help

Another question, sorry never been to this airport & seems a little difficult. When I first check in in providence I think I only get my ticket to Washington. I will have to check in & go and get my next ticket onto São Paulo & porto seguro i think? Will I have to go to the main terminal & also pass through security again to do this? Hoping 1 1/2 is enough time. Thanks!

Since you're flying through to Sao Paulo on United you will at least get your boarding pass to Sao Paulo in Providence. If all your tickets were bought on one reservation, since United and TAM codeshare, you may even get your Porto Seguro boarding pass as well. Also, you can get all United boarding passes on your smartphone.

Even though ill be flying tam to brazil ill get all boarding passes? How do you get them on your iPhone? Thanks for your help!

You are not flying TAM from Washington to Sao Paulo. TAM does not fly to Washington. Your flight from Washington to Sau Paulo is operated by United. You can get your boarding passes at United.com or by downloading United's iPhone app.

  • DFW to London
    Aug 4, 2013
I will be flying United from DFW connecting in IAD to London. I only have 30 minutes between flights. Can this be done?

At IAD, United is the only airline using all of their Midfield Concourses A through D (with corresponding gates, i.e. gate B35) located in 2 separate parallel-running buildings A/B & C/D. A-C connect via AeroTrain, while D gates can only be reached by shuttle bus from A gates, or via walkway from C gates to D gates. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • International transfer to Orlando
    Jul 29, 2013
Hi - Can anyone advise please ? Arriving United from Manchester, England Sat 14.55, connecting to United Orlando flight 17.10. What's the process please ? We're first timers connecting internationally and presume will have to go through customs etc. Will everything happen in Terminal C ? Thanks for any tips.

All international arrivals at IAD are being transported to the International Arrivals Building at the west end of the main terminal for passport check, retrieving checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag. Thereafter you need to take the Mobile Lounge shutttle to gates D1-32, or take the AeroTrain (follow signs) to A,B, or C gates. United uses A,B,C,D gates - your boarding pass & the overhead screens will indicate flight & gatenumber.

Sajul is incorrect. You will clear immigration in the C concourse. You then just re-check your bags and go upstairs into the C/D concourse where your flight to Orlando will depart.

    Thank you Zap

    Thank you sujul

  • Getting from United Gate to Ethiopian Airways?
    Jul 25, 2013
My 16-year old is traveling alone this Saturday morning and will need to get herself from United Airlines Flight UA 5034 (operated by Trans States) from Bradley International in Hartford, CT arriving 7:22am to Ethiopian Airlines for Flight ET 501 departing for Addis Ababa at 10:15am. Would you please give us advice on the best way for her to get to her gate? And what about luggage? Does she have to pick it up and carry it through the terminal? Thanks. We're very grateful for your help!

If her tickets were bought on one reservation then her baggage will be checked straight through to Addis Ababa as United and Ethiopian are codeshare partners. Her flight is currently slated to arrive in C, and she just has to take the Aerotrain from C to A where the Ethiopian flight will depart. There's a chance her arrival will be moved to A, in which case she will be even closer. She has plenty of time.
