I have a 40 minute layover arriving from Boston flight 1693 to connect to 5688 to savannah. Do I have to change terminals

Probably. Your Boston flight will arrive in C/D and your Savannah flight will likely depart form A. However, you will not have to go through security again.

I am arriving at Dulles airport on USAIRWAYS and have a 1 hr connection to Ethiopian airlines to Addis. Is this enough time for me and my luggage to make the connection?

That's very close. You will arrive at the Z-gates and depart from B and have to take the train. If your first flight is on time you will have enough time though.

I am flying from Boston on UUA1455 Friday 26 April, arriving at 9:07pm and only have 1hr layover to catch my flight to Brazil on UA861 10:10pm. Is that going to be enough time to my connecting flight? Do I have to take the train?

You will both arrive and depart from concourse C/D - you will not have to take the train. If your first flight is on-time you will have enough time.

I am flying from Cancun on UA 1133 arriving at 8:12pm and only have 1hr 48min layover to catch my flight to Buffalo on UA 5705. Is that going to be enough time for me to get through customs, security, etc and make it to my connecting flight? I was told by expedia it was enough but I didn't have a very good experience with IAD last time I flew through there...

It should be enough time - Immigration won't be that busy that late in the evening.

  • 46 minutes connection to Beijing

I have a connecting flight on July5 from Houston to Beijing through IAD, The flight IAH- IAD UA321 arriving at 11:34am , and connect to UA897 to Beijing departing at 12:20pm, only 46 minutes layover. Is it enough time for me and the baggage? (checking baggage through to Beijing). Thank you.

If your first flight is on-time then it should be enough time. You will both arrive and depart in the C/D concourse so you can just walk between your gates.

  • 50mins connection to NRT

I'm frlying thru IAD. (UAX to UA intenational) first tie @ IAD for such a transfer. based on the thread here, it seems like my UAX will go into A and my departure would be C. is there an additional security check point toward international departure gates on this transfer? (some airports do have them)

There is no additional security check. Some UAX flights do use C (mainly larger regional jets).

Thx ZAP, as my screen name says, i'm flying from JAX and UAX is ERJ-145 with 2-1 array. so.. the chance is my flight will go into those smaller carrier section in A. my current connecting flight to NRT is the last flight of the day for UA. I wish this 50 mins would be enough.

I am flying Saturday April 20 DEN-IAD UA652 arriving at 9:00 p.m. connecting to UA932 to Frankfurt at 9:45 p.m. I'd hate to miss an international connection (i have no baggage). Is it likely that these two flights will be arriving and departing from the same terminal at IAD? What are the chances of a safe connection? Thanks, Sheryl

Yes. You will arrive and depart from C or D which are all connected.

  • 43 Minute Layover
    Apr 2, 2013

I have a flight with United Airlines from Norfolk Virginia (ORF) at 6:15 am to arrive at IAD at 7:28 am. I have a connecting flight from IAD to San Juan Puerto Rico (SJU) which is still domestic. The layover is only 43 minutes though! This is happening on Saturday April 6th. Will I be able to make the connecting flight in time? I also have special baggage (surfboard bag) traveling with me. Will they be able to get the bag on the flight in time as well? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have checked a lot of the flights from ORF to IAD and they are all on time. Even the 4889 flight I am on was 15 minutes early to IAD today.

Morning flights are usually pretty on-time. You can probably make the connection. But you will have to hurry.

Do you think my boardbag will make it?

It will probably make it if you do, but of course there's no guarantees, make sure you pack enough stuff for one day in your carry on.

One last question. Is there any way to know ahead of time, besides for the day of the flight, what terminal or gate my flight from ORF to IAD will be at and what gate or terminal the flights to Puerto Rico are at? I am trying to figure out if I will need to take the shuttle or just walk to the gate. Thanks again!

It appears that that early ORF-IAD flight is operated by Colgan, those arrive at concourse A. Your San Juan flight is on United (mainline) so it will depart from C or D. So if your first flight is indeed operated by Colgan, you will want to take the A->D shuttle or the A->C AeroTrain

It actually says on my orbitz itinerary that Flight 4889 Operated by /REPUBLIC AIRLINES DBA UNITED EXPRESS. Are the under Colgan?

Sorry, I meant Republic. Yes, that means you'll be coming into A.

  • connecting 1hour to frankfurt

hi, I`m arriving IAD on April 15. at 4.11pm from Minneapolis and my next flight is at 5.15pm to Frankfurt. Is this enough time for the connection to Frankfurt??

At IAD, it depends on which Midfield Concourse you arrive at & depart from. The Underground Aerotrain runs in a continuous loop from the main terminal's post-security area to the center of the midfield concourses A/B and C/D, takes minutes, but presently does not serve the D gates; it can be used for the following gates: A1-32, B35-79, and C1-30. The shuttle bus to the D gates is located on the Main Terminal's lower level (to the right of the passenger walkway to A& B gates). You should be able to make the transfer in the given time. However, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • Connecting IAD to MCO
    Apr 7, 2013

I am arriving at IAD from South Africa, and need to connect to UNited Airlines to Orlando (MCO). How long should it take realistically to clear customs and check in for the MCO flight? My travel agent can book a flight with a 90min or 7 hour between landing and departing. I'd prefer the shorter layover if possible. Thanks

90 minutes is really pushing it, especially considering that the sequester in the US has slowed immigration here and that you won't be checked in for your United flight.

90 mim. is cutting it way to close, you might look into taking the bus to washington regan airport as their are a lot more flights to mco their

Thank you. I actually have 110 min between flights if that makes any difference. However, should I miss my connecting flight to MCO, what is the procedure? Can my booking be transferred to another later flight? Also, which terminal do UA flights depart from to MCO?

  • 1h 57m connection? Brussels > IAD > SFO
    Mar 13, 2013

Hi, I'm coming in from an international flight with United UA141 on Wed., April 24 @ 2:50pm, with a 1 hour 57 min connection to SFO via United UA340. Will I be cutting the connecting flight close? I actually have this on a "FareLock" for great price, good until tomorrow, and just trying to figure out if I should confirm the booking for this. From many of the posts it seems two hours is fine enough, but there were one or two people that said they missed their international to domestic connection thru Dulles with only two hours.Still, I'm leaning towards booking it. Thanks in advance for any advice. *Also, I'm not sure what gates, etc. I'll be coming from and need to get to.. If anyone knows, I'd also appreciate the tip. Cheers

Yes, that should be fine and also if you miss your connection since there are many IAD-SFO flights you have a good opportunity for rebooking. United->United international connections at IAD are pretty easy.

On arrival at IAD, you will be transported to the International Arrivals Building at the west end of the main terminal for TSA clearance, where you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and thereafter re-check-in your bag where indicated. Allow for plenty of time if you need to transfer to another flight. International arrivals who continue their journey must take the shuttle bus to their connecting gate. As to gates - United uses Midfield Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates (i.e. D15, etc.) To familiarize yourself with IAD's layout I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text. Two hours transfer time should suffice.

  • Minimum Connecting Time LAS-IAD-MUC
    Mar 12, 2013

Hello, I have booked a flight from Las Vegas to Munich / Germany via Washington. The time between both flights are only one hour. The flight from Las Vegas to Washington will be operated by United and the flight from Washington to Munich is a Lufthansa one. What is the minimum connecting time for these flights? Is one hour enough? Could I find out on which gate I arrive and on which I departure? Thanks for your helpful comments. Best regards ME

It's awfully tight and doesn't leave much room for error but it's doable. However there are a lot of LH and United flights from IAD to Germany if you miss your connection

Im looking into a connection from Newark to IAD to kuwait, American airlines is giving me 50 min connection time. will that be ok?

At IAD American Airlines uses Midfield Concourse B; American Eagle uses the Main Terminal & Concourse A. Should you arrive at the Main Terminal, you can walk to the separate Midfield Concourse A/B housing A & B gates on either side. You have enough time.

Are you sure you're on American? American doesn't fly Newark-IAD or IAD-Kuwait. However, United does. You're probably on United.

I'm looking at booking this route with United Airlines on Saturday March 16th but am concerned about the 1 hour layover. Since I clear US customs in Montreal and am traveling United all the way through I assume I can head straight to my departure gate at IAD without having to recheck bags or go through any customs. Am I correct in that?

Yes, arrivals into the US from Canadian destinations with preclearance like Montreal are treated like regular domestic flights.

Couple in mid 60's (medium speed walkers) have only 1hr 45min to make IAD connection to Newark!! We are supposed to arrive at IAD 3:05 PM on Wed. May 1st!! What are the odds we will be spending the night in Dulles?? United dropped the flight I had originally booked from IAD to ABE which would have given us a much longer connection time! It seems we have no other options! -- Thanx

You should be able to make your connection in time. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text. Pay attention to "International Arrivals", "Getting Around" and terminals. Note that after customs clearance procedure, you cannot take the train, but need to take the shuttle bus, meaning that at your connecting terminal you will have to go through security check. (Dulles Airport is located 26 miles from Washington D.C.) If you want to stay overnight, I suggest you search for 'Dulles hotels' - there is no on-airport hotel.

1 hr 45 is sufficient for any domestic connection at Dulles.
