  • Connection time domestic arrival to international departure
    Oct 21, 2013
Hi. I have 71 minutes between United 505 from Tampa (arriving 21:09) and BA 292 to London Heathrow (departing 22:20). United said they will tag my bags through to London. Please can you tell me if I have enough connection time and if I have to go through security or passport control again. Many thanks for any help.

Your transfer time will suffice (only international arrivals need to go through passport control; your bags will be automatically transferred. However, as United uses Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates, look on arrival at overhead screens for your departing flight & gate number. For transfer options I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Make sure to check-in for your British Airways flight on-line before you leave Tampa.

  • Connection time needed from domestic arrival to international flt
    Oct 15, 2013
Hi,I am fying from Albany NY to London and found great flights but very tight 56 minute connection time. Namely alb-iad UA flt3899 arrive IAD 9:04pm connect to UA924 departing IAD at 10pm. Is this enough time for me to get to gates in time for boarding and for my luggage to get transferred- or should I take the connecting flight with a 2 1/2 hour layover?

Yes you have enough time at 56 mins. However, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • Baggage turnaround

We are flying into Dulles gate C19 from Orlando with United Airlines enroute to London Heathrow with United Airlines from Gate C12 how will our luggage be handled. Do we need to collect it and re-check it for the London flight. We have 50 minutes to complete the transfer?

Only international arrivals at U.S. need to go through customs clearance /re-check-in bags. As you use the same airline for both flights, your bags will automatically be transferred.

  • Enough time to connect to an international flight?
    Oct 19, 2013
My sister is flying back to Germany on Saturday, January 3, 2014. The first leg of her trip originates at SFO (United 400) and arrives at IAD at 4:40pm, on the D Concourse if I'm not mistaken. She then has 1 hr 10 minutes to make it to the B-Concourse to catch her connecting flight to FRA (Germany) via Lufthansa flight 419 at 5:50pm. Will she be able to catch her flight?? If I understand correctly she can go through the "Domestic Arrivals", so no need to go through security again, which would save time..?

While United uses Midfield Concourses A/B, & C/D, Lufthansa only uses Concourse B (B gates). She should be able to make the transfer within 70 mins. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, paying attention to the transfer options at 'Getting Around'.

Check your sisters return flight details ..I am also booked on flight LH419 on the 3rd January 2014, but the 3rd leaves on a Friday....not a Saturday as you mentioned, but arrives in Germany on Saturday 4th..... wouldn't want your sister turning up on the wrong day.

  • 40 minutes from arrival to departure
    Oct 8, 2013
I'm looking to fly in from Houston-Bush to Charlottesville Albemarle. Is 40 minutes enough from arrival to departure to get between the UA mainline gates and the United Express gates?

  • 47 minutes connection time for Narita
    Oct 7, 2013
Is 47 minutes enough time to catch my international flight to Narita. United Express from ORF and to UA803.

When are you flying? Currently the only ORF flight that connects to UA803 arrives at 9:58 AM and 803 departs at 12:20

Oct 16, arriving 11:33am at IAD and departs at 12:20.

  • Connection from uk
    Oct 2, 2013
I intend to fly united airlines from Manchester uk to greensboro via dulles. Will my bags be checked through or will I have to pick them up at dulles and check them in again. The united airlines booking shows a stop over of only 1hour 27 minutes. Will I have enough time to catch my connecting flight?

Your bags will be tagged through to Greensboro but you will have to claim them in immigration, carry them through customs, then re-check them once you clear customs at the re-check desk. That is a tight connection but you will probably be OK. You'll have to hurry.

Wow what great service. Many thanks! One more question then. If we are delayed through immigration, and missed the connection, will united put us on the next flight to greensboro?

If there are seats available on it, yes, they will put you on it. They have a 10 PM flight to Greensboro.

  • UA to ET connection
    Oct 2, 2013
Traveling from CLT to IAD on UA 3800 and connecting to ET 501. At which terminal will the United flight arrive, which terminal do I get ET501, and how do I get from one terminal to the other?

IAD only has one terminal, but has two concourse buildings consisting of four lettered concourses. You will arrive in concourse C/D and depart from concourse A. You can take the Aerotrain or mobile lounge shuttle between the concourses. Just follow the signs to A when you arrive.

    Thank you very much.

  • Connection Question
    Aug 23, 2013
Hey Helpful People I'm flying into IAD tomorrow from the UK with Virgin Atlantic. I then have 2 hours to a US Airways flight to MDT. Will this be enough time? WIll I need to collect my luggage and then go back out to departures and check it again? I've done this trip a few times before, but always as a 'route' and so I've just dumped my bag on the big conveyor belt and then go straight to the gate. Cheers for your help

US Airways does not fly from IAD to MDT, so you will actually be on United Express. Yes, you will claim your bag, then if your bag is checked through to MDT on its tag, you can just drop it again immediately after you exit customs.

Thanks ZAP, if it's not checked through to MDT will I have enough time to go up to departures and back in?

Yes, you'll have to go upstairs to the United counter and check it there (and you'll have to pay a checked bag fee).

  • Domestic to International - Re-check Bags?
    Aug 22, 2013
Thank you all for your help, wonderful site. On 8/30, arrive from ATL on DL2032 at 7:25. Connecting to BA292 to LHR at 10:30. I believe both airlines use Terminal A, however I booked each flight separately - do I have to exit terminal, claim baggage and re-check it on BA before coming back through security? I assume this would be the case and so gave myself 3 hours connection time to be safe. Thanks again!

Yes, you will have to claim your bags from Delta and take them to BA and go back through security. You should have enough time.

IAD has one main passenger terminal with Z gates and Midfield Concourses A through D. Both Delta & British use Concourse B; however as you have separate tickets and your airlines do not belong to the same Airline Alliance, you need, on arrival, head for the main terminal's baggage claim by means of a moving walkway. After re-checking in your bag at the British Airways counter, go through security check and take either the moving walkway or the AeroTrain back to 'Midfield Concourse A/B' (B gates: B35-B79). You have plenty of time.

    Thankyou thaug13, I appreciate it!

    Much appreciated ZP, thanks!

  • Connection question
    Aug 19, 2013
I fly into Dulles on FRi from Portland Me via trans state airlines dab United Express. My connection to Lwb Greenbrier is 42 min via silver airways dba United express. Will I have enough time

Yes, both flights will likely be in Concourse A.

  • change terminals?
    Aug 17, 2013
Flying United airlines from Houston Intercontinental Airport and catching United airlines flight to Greenbrier WV (LWB) will i have to change terminals?

At IAD, United uses Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates (i.e., C30). Your boarding pass & overhead screens on arrival should indicate your connecting flight & gate number. I strongly suggest that you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, paying attention to 'International Arrivals' (if applicable), Midfield Concourses and their gates & how to connect.

You will arrive in concourse C/D and depart from A. IAD only has one "terminal". You can take the Aerotrain or mobile lounge between concourses.

  • Connection time query
    Aug 14, 2013
Hi there! Any advice muchly appreciated - I fly into IAD on 21st December from Machester, UK. I need to make a connecting flight to Kansas City and I only have a 90 minute layover. My flight arrives at 3.25pm, but because its the last weekend before Christmas, I thought maybe the airport might be busier than usual and immigration may hold me up. Both flights are United flights so I dont know if my baggage will check all the way through or if i need to collect etc? The problem is that if i miss the connection, there is not another flight to Kansas that day so it would be a real problem.

Yes, you will have to collect your baggage in immigration and re-check it with United after clearing customs. You will probably have enough time. If you do miss your connection, yeah, it will suck but at least United has a flight to Kansas City at 6:30 AM the next morning so you at least wouldn't have to wait THAT long.

  • Halifax Stanfield International airport (YHZ) -- Washington (IAD)
    Aug 14, 2013
I fly into Washington IAD at 11:04 AM. My layover is only 1 hr, 16 mins before departing to Tokyo. Is this enough time? Does anyone have any knowledge of what terminal my Tokyo flight is likely to be at? Can someone give a brief walk-through of what I will need to do coming off my flight and catching the next one?

You will arrive in D. If your flight to Tokyo is on United it will depart from C or D, which is connected and if it is on B, which you can take the mobile lounge or aerotrain to. You should have enough time.

The flight to tokyo is with All Nippon Airways. You mention the aerotrain but the airport website states that international flight passengers are not able to use the aerotrain...Its good to here I will have time though!

You aren't coming on a true international flight - you preclear US immigration in Halifax, so your arrival in Washington DC is like a domestic flight.
