  • United: SFO - IAD - AMS

I'm flying from San Francisco to Amsterdam with a 1hr45min stop in Dulles. Both legs are United. If I check a bag, will I need to collect it and re-check it at Dulles? Additionally, will I have to go through security again at Dulles?

My second question about going through security again is if I decide NOT to check a bag. I'm assuming that going out to baggage claim to retrieve a checked bag will require going through security again. Thanks in advance!

As you use United for both legs of your journey, your bags will be automatically transferred. As United uses Midfield Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad - then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • How long to walk from A4B to A1C?
    Dec 17, 2012

Seems like gates A4B and A1C would be relatively close together but since I am not sure, I was hoping someone here may know. There are 3 of us (me, my boyfriend and our 2 year old which will probably be carried as we only have like an hour to catch connecting flight). Someone please tell me asap how long it'd take to get between those gates and best possible route. Thanks!

You arrive & depart from Midfield Concourse A, simply follow signs to your connecting gate which should take minutes.

  • Dulles to Amsterdam

My daughter is flying by herself for first time (18 yrs old). Arrives Dulles from SFO on 12/25/12 at 3:49pm. Has KLM flight #652 for Amsterdam at 6:15pm. Luggage NOT checked thru from United to KLM. Don't know which concourse/gate the United flight will arrive & don't know where KLM counter & gates are? Does she have enough time to get her luggage from United, check in at KLM & get to her KLM gate? Any info is helpful for this nervous dad. Thanks

    1. United uses Domestic Midfield Concourses A, B & C with corresponding gates. KLM uses Concourse A. Both A & B concourses can be reached by foot from the Main Terminal, while Concourse C needs the AeroTrain. 2. On arrival at IAD your daughter needs to follow signs "TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION" and go to the Main Terminal's lower baggage level & pick up her bags, then proceed to the upper level and check in her bag with KLM; thereafter, she needs to take the passenger walkway to the A gates. 4. I suggest that she opens www.ifly.com/iad, click on "Terminal Map" under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text. She should pay attention to 'International Arrivals' for her return trip. An 18-year old can easily handle this! And she has plenty of time. for transfer.

    Thank you

  • Rome to Ottawa via IAD

My father travels from Rome to Ottawa via Washington (IAD) on December 14th. He has 2h10min between flights UA967 and UA6012. What is the fastest way to change terminals? Is there enough time? Thank you.

IAD has no flight number listing. United uses Midfield Concourses A, B, C & D. He will also have to go through customs clearance before proceeding to his connecting gate. His boarding gate will indicate his connecting concourse & gate. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text. His time should suffice.

  • From Framnkfurt to Mexico city

I am flying via IAD from Frankfurt (Lufthansa) to Mexico city (United Airlines) and I only have 1.45 min for connecting the flight. Is this enough time in 19 of December? What is the faster way to change terminals.?

    1. Lufthansa will arrive at Concourse B of the passenger Terminal; follow signs 'TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION' - international arrivals will board the shuttle bus to US Customs where you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and re-check-in your bag where indicated. From there you will need to board the shuttle bus to your connecting gate. 2. The Main Terminal has two parallel Midfield Concourses with corresponding gates - A/B & C/D - United uses all concourses. Your ticket & the overhead screens will indicate your flight number & gate: (A gates A1-32; B gates B35-79; C gates C1-30 or D gates D1-32.) Your transfer time should suffice.

  • United to SAS enough time to transfer
    Dec 5, 2012
    1
Traveling from Los Angeles via United then have 1:51 to conect to SAS flight to Copenhagen. Anyone knows how long does it take to transfer from United to SAS terminal. My bags should be going directly to Copenhagen. No need to pick them up. is there enought time to transfer?

At IAD, United uses midfield concourses A/B & C/D with corresponding gates. A, B & C gates are connected by the underground Aerotrain making a continuous loop and service gates A1-32, B35-79, and C1-30. (If you arrive at D gates, take the walkway to the C gates and from there, if needed, take the connecting Aerotrain. (follow signs). You have enough time.

  • Changing airlines

I'm arriving US Airways and switching airlines to United. I have a 57 minute layover. I think I'm arriving in Concourse D and I have to go to A. Will this be enough time? I've never been to this airport and I'm arriving at 9pm. Is the shuttle bus the only way to get from D to A?

While US Airways is listed as serving the Z gates - part of the Main Terminal of IAD - United Uses Midfield Concourses A, B, C & D. A shuttle to the A gates departs near gate D11 & Starbucks (D gates are not served by the AeroTrain. From Concourse A you can walk to the Main Terminal and its Z gates. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad and click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS, then scroll down to the detailed text below the map. Also check your ticket for gate numbers.

On 12/23 I am flying from Denver to Dulles on UA0948 arriving @ 4:40. Need to transfer to Lufthansa flight LH0419 which departs Dulles at 5:40. Traveling companion needs wheelchair. Will we be able to make connection to Lufthansa flight?

    1. you need to contact United and tell them that you need a wheelchair out of your arriving gate to your connecting gate with Lufthansa (also make sure that United transfers bags to Lufthansa - not all Airlines do, if not, you would need to claim bags & re-check them in with Lufthansa.) United uses A, B & C gates, Lufthansa B gates. Under normal circumstances, on arrival you would follow signs 'TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION'; domestic arrivals at A, B or C gates should follow the AeroTrain sign. I am flying from detroit on united express flight no. 5734 arrive @ 9:01 pm wonder whether 49 min enough to connect with United flight 932 to Frankfurt @ 9:50 pm

You arrive at Concourse C of IAD and depart from either of Concourses A, B , C or D (with corresponding gates - our ticket and the overhead screen will indicate your departure gate). Follow signs 'TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION'; domestic arrivals should follow the AeroTrain sign; the Underground Aerotrain runs in a continuous loop from the main terminal's post-security area to the center of the midfield concourses A/B and C/D, takes minutes, but presently does not serve the D gates; it can be used for the following gates: A1-32, B35-79, and C1-30. The Mobile Lounge shutttle will take you to gates D1-32 and H-gates.

Thanks frnov12, do I understand that this time is enough to move between the flights. how much time will be to the flight to drop the bags and claim them?

I'm travelling from seattle on united airlines 1563arriving at IAD @ 9:10pm. From there I'm catching an United Airlines flight 932 to Frankfurt which leaves at 9:40pm. My luggage is getting sent straight to Frankfurt so I won't have to retrieve it. How do I get to the departure gate? This is the first time I'm travelling by myself and I'm quite nervous. Please help!

Dorry it leaves at 9:50pm.. I have 40mins.

Thanks for the reply. Since Im coming on a domestic flight, do I have to go through security again when I go to catch my international flight to Frankfurt?

I will be arriving from Kansas CIty into Washington at 900p then connecting to an international flight to Kuwait at 940p. Not sure which terminals they will arrive/depart from. Is 40 minutes enough time to get from one to the other? This will take place in Feb if that makes any difference.

Arrivals & departures depend on which airline you are taking. (Do make sure that your first airline will transfer bags to your connecting airline - if not, you would need to claim your bag on arrival and re-check it in at the second airline's counter. I strongly suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad - then click on "Terminal Map" under QUICK LINKS, and scroll down to the detailed text. Also click on "Flights & Airlines"/ Airlines Served - indicating which airlines serve which terminal/concourse or gate. 40 mins is tight, particularly if your incoming flight is late.

Hi, I'll be coming in from MSY on Feb28@0905pm and have to continue to FRA@2150. Is 45 minutes really enough????? Thanks for the help

    Sorry ... that was November28 ;-)

On arrival at IAD follow sign'To Baggage Claim / Ground Transportation" - then follow the AeroTrain sign. This underground train servees gates A1-32, B35-79 & C1-30. Your ticket & overhead screens on arrival should indicate your departure gate number. You have enough time.

I am flying in from Dayton, Ohio on United Airlines, arriving Dulles at 11.30am. I need to get to an international flight to Singapore on United Airlines at 12.20pm. Is less than one hour enough for the connection?Do I have ample time to make the connetion? Thank you.

    1. On arrival at IAD Airport, look at the overhead screen to find your connecting flight & gate, then follow signs 'TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION'; domestic arrivals at A, B or C gates should follow the AeroTrain sign. 2. United uses A, B, C & D gates (your ticket should indicate gate (i.e., A-32). A & B gates are on either side of the gateway - A gates are A1-32; B gates are B35-79. A1-A6 are for United Express. A walkway connects these concourses to the main terminal. The AeroTrain now connects separately to the A gates A1 to A6, and another one to all B gates. Near gate A6 is the shuttle bus to the D gates. C gates C1-30 & D gates D1-32 are connected by a walkway. C gates C1-30 & D gates D1-32 are connected by a walkway. You should have enough time for transfer.

On Tuesday, 11/13/12, I arrive at Dulles on United #6027 from Pittsburg at 11:41am. My connecting flight, United #235 to Denver is at 12:21pm. I am very concerned that this is not enough time. Can you help me find the fastest route to my connecting flight?

I can't give you the Concourse /gate from which you arrive & depart at IAD: United uses A, B & D concourses with corresponding gates. If arriving at A or B gates: Upon arrival at IAD Follow signs 'TO BAGGAGE CLAIM / GROUND TRANSPORTATION'; domestic arrivals at A, B or C gates should follow the AeroTrain sign; D gates are not connected via train, but only by shuttle bus, departing near gate A6 (I doubt that you will need the D gates). Your time should suffice.

  • Sufficient connection time?
    Oct 19, 2012

I will be returning from a school trip to Qatar with 5 students on Sunday, December 9. Our international flight from Qatar is scheduled to arrive at IAD at 6:40 am and our domestic connection home leaves at 8:15. Considering I am traveling with a group, will the 1 hr 35 min. connection time be sufficient? Any suggestions for planning ahead? Thanks!

All international arrivals at IAD will be transported to the International arrivals building where they will have to go through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance and (if continuing journey) re-check-in bags where indicated. Thereafter a shuttle bus will transport you to your connecting gate. Do make sure that Qatar transfers your bags to the connecting air carrier - if not you would have to check them in at the connecting carrier's counter. Your time should be adequate with proper pre-planning.
