I will be returning to the USA from Frankfurt on a Sunday Evening. How long does it take to go through the immigration? My incoming flight , Lufthansa, arrives at 3:10 PM and the connecting flight . United flight to Pittsburgh is at 4:50 PM. This is a 1: 40 gap between the arrival & the departure. Is this enough time. What are the options if I miss the flight ? Any ideas? By the way, I am a US citizen, so the imigration lines should not be too long I suppose

Yes, that should be enough time. If you miss your connection United will rebook you on their next flight to Pittsburgh.

Hi. I'm a UK citizen flying from San Francisco with Lufthansa operated by United, arriving at 15:55 in IAD. My connecting flight is at 17:15 to Frankfurt (also Lufthansa operated by United). Will this 1:20 connection time be enough?

Yes you have enough time for transfer; note, however, that United uses both C & D gates of the Midfield Concourse C/D - if you need to switch between C & D gates: use the walkway between C gates C1-30 & D gates D1-32.

  • Is 2h and 20 min enough to change flights
    Mar 11, 2014
We are traveling from Copenhagen to Orlando through IAD. The tickets are not single reservations. The first reservation is a SAS flight and arrives at IAD 15:00 which I understand is not really peak hours but close to it. The second reservation from IAD to Orlando is with United and departs at 17:21. Do we have enough time to make the connection (2 adults and a toddler)? We are not US citizens (Swedish). It seems that we will clear US Immigration in the International Arrivals Building, then re-check our bags and go through security and take the AirTrain or Mobile Lounge to Concourse C or D. Have I understood this correctly? Most grateful!

Yes, Even though you are on separate reservations, if you show your United confirmation to the SAS agent in Copenhagen he or she should be able to check your bags through to Orlando. That way you can just re-check your bags in the IAB. If your bags can't be checked through to Orlando you'll have to take them to the United counter in IAD and pay a checked bag fee.

Great small plates and wine selections. Oasis while traveling.

  • 1.5 hours lay over - Enough Time
    Mar 7, 2014
We are flying from Charlotte to Dulles to catch our flight to Zurich, Switzerland for our wedding. We have a layover of about 1.5 hours. Will this be enough time in light of immigration, etc?

Only international ARRIVALS need to go through immigration process. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, including Midfield Concourses, gates, transfer, etc. 1.5 hrs. should suffice.

  • Is 45 min enough to change flights?
    Mar 5, 2014
I am traveling from Montreal to Tokyo through IAD, and I only have 47 min to change flights. Is that enough? I am booking the flight right now and there is no information about the terminals.

IAD only has one terminal. You will arrive in Concourse A, C, or D and depart from Concourse C/D. C/D is one building and A is connected to it by the mobile lounger and aerotrain. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Montreal so all you will have to do at IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. That should be enough time but doesn't leave much room for any delays.

  • Luftansa to United
    Mar 4, 2014
I am arriving to IAD from Frankfurt on Luftansa on Sunday, March 16th at 16:20 and I am scheduled to leave IAD to Tampa on United at 18:00. Will this be enough time to get through immigration/custom and catch my flight. I am a US citizen.

Yes, it should be enough time but it leaves no time for any delays.

Hi I am flying from New York to Manchester, via IAD airport. I only have 45 minutes in between flights. Would this be enough time to transfer? Thanks

Yes, as long as your flight isnt delayed.

  • Connecting United flight from Dubai to Nashville will have 75 mins
    Feb 24, 2014
I am a US Citizen returning back to us. My quiestion is will I have enough time to clear customs and make my Nashville flight, I have 75 min but will not have any checked luggage. The arrival time is 6:55am. Not sure what the trafic is in customs at that time. Please advise I will be flying out United as well.

United uses Midfield Concourse C/D (C & D gates) All international arrivals at IAD are being transported to the International Arrivals Building (IAB) at the west end of the main terminal for TSA clearance. IAB streamlines its passenger flow from the Arrivals Hall all the way through to the passenger greeting area (and down the escalator to the underground AeroTrain for connecting to Concourses A, B & C. After customs clearance: If your connecting flight is out of D gates, you cannot use the AeroTrain (serving only A, B & C gates), but need to take the Mobile Lounge shuttle at Main Terminal's lower level to gates D1-32. 75 minutes is tight, but should be doable if incoming flight is on time.

Modern is incorrect. You will likely go throu I,migration in united's facility in C/D. You will have a tough time making this connection in 75 mins but it is possible.

  • Is 1 hr connection time enough?
    Feb 21, 2014
United just switched my flights so my family of 4 has only 59 minutes to connect from an inbound flight from Greenville to outbound to Heathrow. Right now it appears those flights land at A4 and depart from C7. At 8:50pm, is 1 hour sufficient time to make that connection? Thank you!

The gates flights use change from day-to-day, but you will likely arrive in concourse A and depart from Concourse C or D. Yes, if your first flight is on-time you should have enough time. The concourses are connected by the AeroTrain and mobile lounges inside security.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your help

  • london to orlando via dulles 1hr 14min connect time with united
    Feb 15, 2014
I need to clear immigration and re-check bags and security on Fri 23 May 11.20am - heard horror stories about Dulles - is this likely to be peak time /doable? and will I need to go to a different terminal? Thanks

    1. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, which addresses "Terminal layout of IAD Airport, Important Notices, Getting around, International Arrivals, Transportation/ Connections, Main Terminal & Midfield Concourse Details". NOTE: If both legs of your journey are bought on one ticket, your bags will be transferred thereafter to your connecting flight. If not, you will have to claim bags after customs and re-check them in with United, taking extra time. As you will be shuttled to the Main terminals on arrival at IAD, and after customs need to get to either Concourses/ gates D or C (United), your stated time is tight, but fortunately you don't arrive during rush hours and May is still pre-main season.

Many thanks will check it out - it is one booking all with united also notice it is memorial day weekend so I will keep my fingers crossed

Memorial Day Weekend is not a heavy travel period. IAD only has one terminal. If your international flight is on United you will likely use their dedicated immigration facility in Concourse D.

  • Time between connecting flights (domestic to international)
    Feb 12, 2014
I'm flying in from Atlanta (with Delta) at 4.40pm and I have to catch another flight to London at 6.30pm (with British Airways) - do I need to claim my luggage and check in again? If I do, would 1h50min be sufficient for me to do that? Thanks!!

I would also like to mention that my tickets were not bought on a single reservation. Thanks for your help!

Both British & Delta use Midfield Concourse B/C (B gates). As you booked separate tickets, you will need to claim your bags first at the Main terminal and re-check them in with British. A walkway connects these concourses to the main terminal, as well as separate AerTrain shuttles. Your transfer time should be enough. To get a good idea of the terminal layout, etc. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

thanks so much for your help!! :)

  • 1H20M Layover time in IAD
    Nov 7, 2015
We are thinking to book UA804 from Tokyo JP and connect UA3335 in IAD to PHL, but the layover time in IAD is only 1 hour 20 mins. I think we'll have to go through the customs in IAD. Will we have enough time? Thanks.

Yes, you will go through immigration in United facility in concourse D, then go through customs, re-check your bags, and go through security. Then you will likely have to take the Plane Train to Terminal A where your flight to PHL will depart. It will be hard to do that in 80 minutes but it is doable.

Sorry, I meant Concourse A, not "Terminal A".

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know that we'll need to re-check our bag (we only took direct flights before for international).

I'm coming from Saudi Arabia with Saudia airlines arriving to IAD at 12:20 pm and I have a purchased a separate ticket for Orland FL with Frontier airlines at 2:09 pm. Will this be enough time to go through immigration and checkout the luggage and recheck with the flight to Orlando? If it is not enough how much time do I need? Please not the flight is on 30 December 2015
