Quality surprisingly high for airport food. Local chain not ruined by large-chain mediocrity. Best food I've found in Dulles.

  • SCE to IAD and IAD to DXB connection
    Nov 24, 2013
Hello, I am arriving at IAD from SCE at 7.15AM (united airlines) on November 28th. My connecting flight to DXB (emirates) is at 10.10 AM. I believe I have enough time to make the connection. Could you please explain from where to where will I have to move in airport and how much time it would take to move?

If your tickets were bought on one reservation your bags can be checked through to Emirates in State College and you can just go from your arrival gate in A to departure gate also in A. If not, you need to go to the main terminal baggage claim, take your bags upstairs to the departure level, and then re-check them with Emirates. You should have enough time.

I appreciate your quick response. Thank You.

  • Transferring from United Express Flight to BA Flight
    Nov 17, 2013
We have made reservations on a United Express Flight from Columbus, Ohio to IAD which arrrives at 8:17 P.M. and, on a separate reservation need to connect with a BA Flight to Heathrow that leaves at 10:30 P.M. Will we have to collect our bags and recheck them? Will we have enough time to do so?

Yes, you will have to claim your bags and re-check them. If your United Express if your first flight is on-time you will barely have enough time.

Thank you. We switched to an earlier flight.

Hi I'm flying with some friends from Indianapolis to St Croix on November 20 and we have 47 minutes to get from our flight from IND to our flight to San Juan. Is this a long enough connection for us to board the plane

Yes, you should be OK. Early morning flights generally run on-time or early and both flights will operate from the C/D concourse of IAD.

  • 45minutes to coonect flight
    Nov 12, 2013
My flight details. Depart LGA 10.10am Arrive IAD 11.35am. Operated by Expressjet. Connection in Washington DC 45 mins Depart IAD 12.20pm How do I connect within the 45minutes? I will be flying via United Airlines all the way.

You just go from gate to Gate in IAD. You will arrive in Concourse A. Your departing flight will be in A, C, or D. What is your second flight?

Appreciates your prompt reply. Flying in from LGA.Flight no UA5736. Connecting UA flight no 0803. depart IAD 12.20pm on Sat 25 January 2014. Can I check in my luggage all the way from LGA to SIN? Thank you

Your second flight will leave from the C concourse at IAD. Yes, your bags will be checked straight through to SIN at LGA and you won't have to touch them until you get there.

Thanks once again. Here is another concern, do I have to go passport check, custom clearance again? Also how much is needed for concourse A to concourse C via aero train?

The only time you will have to go through immigration is when you get to Singapore. A and C in IAD are connected beyond security. You won't have to go through any formalities in IAD.

  • LH FRA to IAD to IAH Connection Time
    Nov 17, 2013
I'm flying on LH418 from FRA to IAD on Saturday Nov 9th arriving at 3:20p, then connecting at 5:05p on UA1577 from IAD to IAH. Is this enough time? I'm flying business class on the LH flight and will have one carryon and one checked bag. Thanks!

International arrivals at IAD are being transported to the International Arrivals Building at the west end of the main terminal for TSA clearance, where you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag where indicated. As United uses A, B, C & D gates at IAD - look at overhead screens to find your connecting flight & gate number. While A/B gates can be reached by walkway, C gates will need a transfer via AeroTrain. If your connection is at D gates (Midfield Concourse C/D) you cannot use the AeroTrain, but need to take the Mobile Lounge shuttle at Main Terminal's lower level to gates D1-32. Your transfer time should suffice.

UA1577 will depart from the C or D concourse, which you will reach using the AeroTrain or mobile lounge after re-checking your bags and going through security in the main terminal.

Just an update. The LH flight I was on arrived 20 minutes late into IAD. When we arrived into immigration there had to have been 600 people in the room being served by 8 immigration officers. After chatting with many people in line, if you had a flight with the next 2 hours you were going to miss it. What I didn't realize was after immigration and bag claim was how slow the TSA bag screening would be. I was being scanned through when my United App told me my flight had just taken off. Ugh! I will never fly into IAD again from across the pond and have a connecting flight. It was embarrassing how slow the immigration and TSA were working.

  • Lufthansa to United confused!
    Nov 3, 2013
Slightly confused about transferring flights at Dulles. Arriving with LH from Frankfurt at 15.20 connecting to SFO with UA at 17.35. My question is.....Do arriving LH passengers with connections travel from B gates on a mobile lounge to IAB at the main terminal building OR do they take you to terminal C and clear immigration and customs there?

You clear at the IAB - only flights that arrive in C use Concourse C Immigration.

    Thx for your help.....

Hi...still a little confused.... just read on another forum that United airlines and *A partners with connections will clear immigration at C concourse. For passengers "Terminating" and non *A airlines, they will clear at the IAB in the main terminal. Therefore I guess if I am arriving from LH and connecting to UA, I will clear immigration and customs at C concourse.

Well, either way, just follow the signs.

You are correct. Since you are arriving on LH, you will clear at the Concourse C FIS. Once customs clearance is complete, you connect your UAL connecting flight in either Concourse C or D. Should have enough time. Good luck!

  • KLM from AMS to TPA on UA
    Oct 29, 2013
Arriving KLM 651 at 1530, was scheduled on UA at 2205, but UA has rescheduled to UA 1259 at 1752. Will we have enough time? Tickets were bought seperately.

That should probably be enough time. You will clear immigration in the International Arrivals Building. Once clearing you will be able to go upstairs to check your bag and check in with United. Note that since your tickets were bought separately you will have to pay a checked bag fee for your United flight.

  • Boston to DC to Brazil
    Oct 28, 2013
Hi, I'm travelling from Boston to Dulles via United, arriving at 9:05pm. My flight from Dulles to Sao Paulo Brazil departs at 10:10, leaving me just about an hour to make the connecting flight. Is that enough time to safely make my flight?

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. Both flights will be in the C/D concourse.

  • Connecting time arriving Avianca and departing on South African
    Oct 24, 2013
My AVIANCA flight from Colombia arrives at 14:20, I need to clear customs, get my bags and then recheck in order to board my flight on South African Airways which departs at 17:40. Will this be O.K.?

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • Enough time?
    Oct 22, 2013
I'm planning to travel from Abu Dhabi via Etihad Airways on December 16, scheduled 4:40 PM arrival at IAD. I'd like to book a 6:05 PM departure to Denver via United. Is 85 minutes enough transfer time?

I would try for a later flight since you'll have to transfer your bags yourself since the tickets will be bought on separate reservations. Also be aware that you will have to pay a checked bag fee on United since you are purchasing separate tickets. It sucks that the next flight isn't until almost 10 PM, but I think you'd have a really tough time transferring bags in 85 minutes, especially if you aren't a US citizen and have the slower immigration line.

  • Flying United from Montreal to Tokyo with 45min connection at IAD
    Oct 22, 2013
Hi, Is a 45min connection long enough to transfer my checked luggage? It seems risky. Thx

That's pretty tight. I'd try for a longer connection if possible.

  • Enough connection time?
    Oct 21, 2013
hi. My daughter will be flying home to Canada from VA in December and she will be flying into Dulles from Roanoke VA with a 50minute layover to then departing to Toronto. The flights are the same carrier. Will this be enough time to make the connection?

If the first flight is on-time, then yes, it will be enough time, even if she has to change concourses.

  • Sister's arrival
    Nov 7, 2013
My sister arriving via Kuwait Airlines Dec. 22 at 06:50 am and has a connecting flight via UA 3330 at 0925 am. She still need to get her luggage and go to customs. Can you please help me if she will be able to make to her connecting flight on time. Where is the closest check in counter for UA? What level is she going to check in? and she still need to go thru Security again to go to her gate designated to UA 3330. Any advise will help her. This is her first time to travel to the US. Thank you in advance.

Your sister has enough transfer time: International arrivals at IAD are being transported to the International Arrivals Building at the west end of the main terminal for TSA clearance, where they need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag. (making sure prior to departure that Kuwait Airlines will transfer bags to United connecting flight - if tickets were bought separately). Thereafter she will board the Aerotrain (signs will guide her) to her connecting 'Midfield Concourse - Unite uses A, B & C for domestic flights - overhead screens on arrival will indicate flight & gate numbers. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Kuwait Airlines does not fly to Washington-Dulles. Please double-check your sister's itinerary.

Sorry, she is flying via UA 981 not Kuwait Airlines...wrong information. Thanks for letting me know.

In that case ignore what tuoct said. She will likely clear immigration in the C/D Inspection area. From there she can go upstairs after clearing immigration, claiming her bags, going through customs, and re-checking them with United, and then going through security. United 3330 to Harrisburg departs from concourse A, so she will have to take the Aerotrain or Mobile Lounge from C/D to A. There will be overhead signs showing the way to A.

Thank you for the information. Have a great day!

My sister is arriving Dec. 22 via United Airlines UA 981 at 6:50 a.m. She has a connecting flight to MDT via UA 3330 at 9:25 am. Does she still need to get her luggage after the customs or she will just get her luggage in the final destination (MDT)? Does she has an ample time to catch her connecting flight? Does she still need to check in in the United Airlines? Please advise. Any help will do.

  • Connection time domestic arrival to international departure
    Oct 21, 2013
Hi. I have 71 minutes between United 505 from Tampa (arriving 21:09) and BA 292 to London Heathrow (departing 22:20). United said they will tag my bags through to London. Please can you tell me if I have enough connection time and if I have to go through security or passport control again. Many thanks for any help.

Your transfer time will suffice (only international arrivals need to go through passport control; your bags will be automatically transferred. However, as United uses Concourses A, B, C & D with corresponding gates, look on arrival at overhead screens for your departing flight & gate number. For transfer options I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Make sure to check-in for your British Airways flight on-line before you leave Tampa.
