  • Connection & Baggage

I am flying from ATL to IAD, and then to Rome, Italy. I have a connector that is only 52 minutes. Will I have enough time to make my flight to Italy? And, will that give baggage claim enough time to transfer my checked bags from my first plane to my second? I don't want to be in Italy with no clothes!

Yes, all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate if both flights are on the same reservation. You should have enough time.

    That should be enough time.

  • will I have enough time to board my international flight
    May 19, 2016
My Untied flight from Louisville KY allows one hour forty three minutes to board my United international flight to Barcelona. Is this enough time and do I go through security checks again?

That is enough time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You do not have to go through security.

  • From Ottawa to Portland connecting @IAD
    May 23, 2016
I have reservation from United Airlines from Ottawa to Portland connecting at IAD. I only have 1 hour and 10 mins. My US customs and immigration would be cleared at Ottawa, Canada. When I reach IAD, do I need to claim luggage and re-check? How long this typically takes? Is this time frame good enough for claiming baggage, re-check and clearing security? Thank you for the attention.

You don't have to do anything with your bags at IAD or go through security. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Thanks a lot! IAD website doesn't explain the process for Pre screened passengers. So, I was a bit nervous.

But when I called up United customer care they said if if you are Pre-screened, you still have to claim baggage and re-check. Is that correct?

That is incorrect - they are confused.

  • transfer time domestic to international flight

I am travelling from New Orleans with United to IAD arriving mid afternoon Sunday with 2.5 hours to connect to a BA flight to Heathrow. I have luggage to check . Will I need to collect my luggage and go through security at IAD and will I have enough time to do it. Any comments very welcome

If your tickets are on two separate reservations, yes, you will have to claim your bags, re-check them with British Airways, and go back through security. You have barely enough time if everything goes smoothly.

    Thank you that's very helpful

We will be arriving via UA into IAD at 16:15, and departing via UA to AMS at 17:25. Is this enough time to safely make our connection, or is it cutting things close? Thanx!

Forgot to add, arriving from TYS.

Yes, that should be enough time. All gates at IAD are connected inside security.

Im flying in from Austin texts have to change over flight to aerlingus flight in a hour will I have enough time

We are arriving IAD via Amsterdam (connecting in Frankfurt) on Lufthansa. We arrive at 1:25PM. On a separate ticket, we have an American Flight to Charlotte which departs at 4:55. Is 2 hrs. 50 minutes a long enough connection time? We do have Global Entry if that makes a difference. Thank you

With Global Entry that should be enough time.

  • arriving from Toronto and connecting from IAD to Narita Tokyo
    May 19, 2016
Do you know at which gate will the Toronto arrive in IAD and at which gate the Narita flight will depart? I have 1 hr and 6 minutes layover time, will there be enough time for connection? By what means will people travel from gate to gate? Thank you.

Are both flights on United? If so they will likely be both in the C/D concourse. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. You have enough time.

    thank you

  • Arrival time for Intl Fllight
    May 12, 2016
Not a question about a connection, but I fly from IAD to Dublin on Aer Lingus Friday at 5:20 p.m. I know this is peak time at Dulles, but I don't think I'll be able to make it to the airport before 3:00 p.m., cutting it much closer than I would like at this airport. Will this be enough time to get through security and to my gate without checking bags? Any suggestions to make it a bit easier? Thanks!

That should be enough time. Unlike the rest of the country, the airports in Washington DC are properly staffed by the TSA.

  • 40 minutes to get from terminal A to C
    May 11, 2016
Do I have enough time to get from terminal a to c to connecting flight if I only have 40 minutes?

A and C are just concourses, not terminals. You have enough time if the first flight is on-time. They are connected inside security by the mobile lounge and aerotrain.

  • Time necessary?
    May 10, 2016
I have to be on the flight Brussels Airlines from IAD to Brussels at 17.50h. Coming from New York I have to choose between an earlier Delta flight (Shuttle America Delta Connection) arriving at 12.59h or a later United flight arriving at AID at 15.14h. I would prefer the second one but do I have enough time? Thanks

If you are not checking bags you can easily take the United flight. Even with checked bags the United flight is possible but doesn't leave much time to spare for delays.

  • Enough time?

Is 3 hours enough for a connection time for a flight originating from Vienna? Next flight is to Orlando. Both flights in one reservation, under Austrian Airlines.

Yes, that should be enough time. Note that your flight to Orlando will be operated by United.

  • Connecting SAS from CPH to United to ROC (separate tickets)
    May 9, 2016
Father arriving on SAS flight from Copenhagen at 3pm on an ESTA and has to connect to United flight to Rochester departing at 5:05pm. The two flights are not on the same ticket. I'm concerned the time is a bit short so I want to make sure he knows where to go. Does he go through immigration at FIS or IAB? Where does he go after he clears immigration and customs? He has to check a bag with United. Does he have to go to the main terminal again and through security or will he be able to check his back somewhere else? Does it make a difference whether he checks in online before hand, i.e., already has his boarding pass for the United flight? Thank you!

Yes, upon arrival he will be taken to the International Arrivals Building, go through US Immigration, and claim his baggage, then take his bags to the United check-in desk, and go through security and to his departure gate. Yes, checking in beforehand will help. He could also show his United confirmation to the SAS agent in Copenhagen and ask them to tag his bags to ROC. He will still have to claim his bags to go through US Customs, but he can re-check his bags at the re-check desk and if he is checked in online then he can go straight to the security checkpoint.

  • Connection Flight (Dubai DXB- IAD - BDL)
    May 9, 2016
Hi I am on student visa booking a flight from Dubai to Washington on Emirate Airline, 02:20 Dubai DXB – 08:40 Washington IAD and then a separate ticket on United Airline from IAD to Hartford departing on 12:40 approximately 4 hours later. The ticket agent promised to put notes for both airlines to pass my luggage all the way through to Hartford, but in case that doesn't happen, Q1: do I have time to go through US immigration, claim bags and then check in again?. Q2 Will it be different if I book another route that goes from Dubai - Doha- Miami- Hartford but all on same ticket? or is it just a policy in America that where ever you land 1st, I have to go through immigration and customs regardless of one ticket or separate tickets.

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags and go through US Customs, if your bags are tagged to Hartford (BDL) you can then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, otherwise you will have to take them to the United check-in counter. Regardless you will probably have to go to the United counter or kiosk to get your boarding pass to Hartford. Then go through security and to your departure gate. Yes, you always have to go through US Immigration and customs at your entry point to the US, so in the second itinerary you posted, you would go through Immigration and Customs in Miami, which is a MUCH more delay-prone and congested airport than IAD.

Thank you so much for your quick reply, appreciate your help
