I AM ARRIVING ON SAA FLITE FROM JOHANNESBURG INTO WASHINGTON IAD AT 06H35 AND THEN DEPARTING ON PORTER AIRLINES PD 720 FOR TORONTO DEPARTNG AT 09H00 THESE ARE TWO SEPRATE TICKETS DO I HAVE ENOUGH CONNECTING TIME? CAN I BOOK THE BAGGAGE STRAIGHT THROUGH TO TORONTO OR DO I HAVE TO COLLECT MY BAGGAGE AND GO THROUGH PASSPORT CONTROL AND RECHECK MY BAGGAGE IN AGAIN? PLEASE ADVISE? THANKS

Yes, that should be enough time. No, you cannot book your baggage straight through. You will have to claim it, go through Customs, then take your baggage to the departure level to check it with Porter.

  • connecting on flight from LHR to domestic United flight

Scheduled to arrive at IAD on Virgin Atlantic from LHR at 2:50 pm, if no delays, and depart on a United flight to SAN at 5:15 pm. Supposed to have priority baggage handling, but that might mean nothing. Also have global entry. Is this enough time to clear customs, re-check bags and make SAN flight connection? Thanks.f

Yes, I think that will be enough time.

  • Port of Entry at IAD

I will be landing by Lufthansa flight operated by United at 3.10pm and will have 1hr 40min to board another flight to Buffalo. I have a single ticket and all my tickets are booked by Lufthansa and both flights are operated by United Airlines. Being International passenger on student visa port of entry will be at IAD. I am worried whether the time (1hr 40min) is sufficient for Port of Entry procedure. Secondly, my flight will land at C Terminal and departure flight is at D Terminal, will the port of entry procedure done at C terminal and I can board flight at D gate or I have to go to different terminal. Lastly about my checked in baggage, do I need to recheck in the baggage if yes then at which terminal? Are the baggage recheckin facilities available at C/D terminal.

1 hr 40 minutes is sufficient. IAD only has one terminal. C and D are two concourses and are in fact just two sides of the same concourse building. You will go through US Immigration in Concourse C, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United, all in Concourse C. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate.

Thanks ZAP, with your advise I am confident that I will be clearing all within stipulated time. Thanks a lot again.

  • Connection from LHR through IAD to SFO

I have a flight (UA) that has a 5h20m layover in IAD on the way to SFO from LHR (London). From reading the other posts, it looks like I'll have to collect my luggage and re-check it. Is that the case? Does that mean I can also leave the airport and explore Washington for 2 hrs or so and make my way back?

Yes, that is the case and yes when you re-check your bags you will be outside security and free to go where you want. However, IAD is very far from anything worth seeing unless you like seeing aviation museums as there is one very close to IAD. IAD is over an hour each way in a taxi from the city.

Thanks for the response. I forgot that the last time I was in DC, I flew to DCA, which is significantly closer to everything.

  • Changing Flight to Qatar Airways at IAD
    Jul 29, 2014

I'm flying in from Charlotte to IAD in US Airways and then flying to Doha from IAD in Qatar airways. The itinerary is booked as one flight ticket (hoping that makes sense). So do I need to go out of terminal at IAD, go to Qatar airways counter and go through security again ? I'm going to check in online and get boarding passes for Qatar airways and check in my luggage at Charlotte. US Airways confirmed that once i check in the luggage at CLT, I do not need to get them at IAD.

Since you purchased your tickets together your bags should be checked through to Doha in Charlotte and all you will have to do at IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both be on the B concourse.

thanks for the prompt reply. I was not sure if I had to go through security again or not but you clarified it.

  • rechecking bags

I am flying in from Vienna ( Austria)on Austrian airlines tomorrow and i have a connecting flight to Orlando 3 hours after arriving on United. Unfortunately i had to book my tickets separately and therefor my bags will not be checked all the way through to Orlando. Does anyone know if there is a United check in counter right after costumes and immigrations? I am pregnant and have a little one as well and i really hope i don't have to walk all the way to the main check in desk with all of our bags. Thank you so much

There are United check-in counters just upstairs from the exit of customs. Also, you can ask the Austrian agent in Vienna if he or she can check your bags through to Orlando for you by showing your United confirmation. They may be willing to since Austrian and United are Star Alliance partners. If they do that then you can immediately re-check your bags with United after clearing customs and avoid paying a checked bag fee.

  • Enough time??? BOS-> IAD -> NRT
    Jul 28, 2014
    1
I arrive at IAD from BOS at 11:15AM, and depart to NRT at 12:25PM. Which terminals would I be arriving and departing at? Would I have enough time?

IAD only has one terminal, but has 4 concourses on two buildings. Both flights should be on the C/D concourse. Yes, you should have plenty of time as all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Changing Flight at IAD

I will be arriving IAD from NY (LGA) around 7am and my flight to Orlando leaves 45 mins later. Will there be enough time to catch this flight?

Yes, you should have enough time if your first flight is on-time. Your flight from IAD will likely arrive at the A concourse and your flight to Orlando will depart from C or D. A is connected to C and D by the mobile lounge and aerotrain, follow the signs.

    Thanks so much

  • 59 Minute connection time ?
    Jul 28, 2014

I don't fly regularly and I did review other posts here but with the variables...? I'm flying United into IAD sched to arrive on a Fri 11:21 a.m. and connect United for YUL - Trudeau depart 12:20 (59 min). I booked assuming this would be enough but after reading some posts ?

Correction - not sure why I was thinking "Friday" this flight is on a TUES if that makes a difference.

As long as your first flight is domestic this should be enough time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you have to go between the A concourse and C/D they are connected by the mobile lounge and Aerotrain.

Yes incoming flight is domestic. Thank you ZAP !

I arrive from manchester(united kingdom) on united airlines and have 2 hours 50 minutes which is plenty of time to connect to our flight to new york wuth united airlines, do we have to go through immigration ect and then check in again, what is the procedure?

You will arrive in the C/D concourse at IAD where you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, follow the signs for connecting passengers and re-check your bags with United, then go through security and you will be back in C/D. If your flight to New York leaves from A, you an take the mobile lounge or aerotrain there. You should be given both of your boarding passes in Manchester. You won't have to go through any immigration again when you get to New York.

  • Connection time - changing carriers from AA to Virgin Atlantic
    Jul 19, 2014

I am scheduled to arrive at IAD at 3:25 PM on American. I am scheduled to board a Virgin Atlantic international flight to LHR at 6:40 PM. Enough time? Even if the American flight is delayed?

Yes, that should be enough time. You have enough spare room for about 90 minutes of delays.

  • Short Connection Concern
    Jul 14, 2014

I'm arriving in IAD from NRT at 3:45pm and to connect at 4:55pm to RDU. Even though they say it's a legal connection, I'm quite concerned I will miss this flight. My seat is also at the very back of the plane. Any help to my situation if I upgrade to economy plus?

1 hr 10 minutes is not a legal International -> Domestic connection length. You need to ask to be rebooked either on a later flight to RDU or over a different United hub such as ORD, SFO, or EWR.

I am scheduled to arrive at IAD at 3:45pm on a United flight from Tokyo (NRT). My connecting flight (United) from IAD to Boston Logan is scheduled to depart at 5:05pm. Is 1 hr 20 min enough to time to clear immigration/customs and make my connecting flight?

It is possible. However that is prime arrival time into IAD and 1 hr 20 minutes is below the Minimum Intl->Domestic connection time. So it is a bit risky.

Interesting. My husband booked same flight to IAD w/ same departure time (to BTV - Vermont). I asked about the itinerary, also concerned about connections, and United Airlines assured me it is well within "legal" connection times.

Regarding IAD connection -- we also considered changing flight through ORD, buys us an extra 45 minutes, BUT change fee is $300. I wish I knew what United is looking at when they say within legal time limits -- I'm not familiar with Minimum Intl>Domestic connection times, but I think they should be. It will be cheaper to book hotel than change ticket.

  • delayed flight

My flight from SDF to IAD is delayed. I need to make a flight to Brussels by the boarding end time of 520, but because of the delay, I wont arrive in DC until 4:44. It looms like I arrive at gate A4 and depart gate C2. The departing flight leaves at 5:35. Can I make it???

Yes, it's possible, take the AeroTrain from A to C.

Security won't open until like 4:30, but you'll be the only ones there that early so it won't take any time to get through security. If you get there at 4:15 you should have plenty of time.

  • Time to catch different plane???
    Jun 24, 2014

I'm flying in from Orlando and should land in IAD at 11:16am. I have to catch another plane at 12:20pm. This is one of those "hacker" deals from Kayak. I'm trying to decide if I will have enough time to catch the other plane. I don't know how far apart the 2 planes are. Is this a big airport? Do you think I will have time to catch another plane? Will I have to go through security or something else that may slow me down? Any help is appreciated!

All gates at IAD are connected inside security. If you don't have checked bags and check in for your second flight on-line you should be OK.

That should be enough time. You will go through Immigration, claim your bags, go through customs, then re-check your bags in Terminal 4. Then you can go to the departure level, through security, and then take Delta's shuttle bus to Terminal 2 where you will depart, or take the AirTrain/Air Terminals Train to T2 and go through security there.
