  • Connection from san Francisco to Geneva

Hello, I will be flying in to Geneva on the 2nd of November from San Francisco via Dulles. Connection is 55 minutes. Is this enough time ? We will be traveling with an 11 months old baby. Do we need to pick up our luggage and check in again? We are of French nationality. Thank you

No, you will not have to do anything with your baggage. All you have to do in IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be on the C/D concourse. There is no US Immigration or Customs when leaving the country. You should have enough time as long as your first flight is on-time.

thank you very much for your answer!

I am flying with my 84 year old mother on UA from GSP to IAD and connecting to Hong Kong, also on UA. Is 40 minutes enough time to make our connection and where do we need to go? She is mobile, but won't be able to run if need be. Should I get a wheel chair to speed things up?

  • LHR - IAD - LGA Connection time.

Hello i will be flying from LHR to IAD on the 12/17/14 with united and i have a connection time of 1 hour 15 minutes is this enough time to check a bag and then catch the connection while clearing customs and also going through security again? and if the i know i will struggle to make it if customs lines are long is there anything i can do?

Your first consideration will be the baggage transfer. If you bought the your trip on one ticket, or your two airlines have a code-share agreement - your bags will automatically be transferred; if such is not the case, you would need to take your bag and re-check it in with your connecting flight. While at least 2 hrs are suggested for international arrivals procedures, you may be able to make the transfer quicker if you arrive during non-peak hours. Connections are a bit more complicated at IAD - therefore, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, indicating transfer options, airlines & gates, etc.

1 hr 15 minutes International -> Domestic on United at LGA is doable but difficult. If you miss your connection there are other flights from IAD to LGA or Newark.

I am taking United from LAX Rome, and need to transfer at IAD and layover is only 1 hr. Does anyone know if I have to go through custom and grab luggages and check in my luggage again? Is one hr enough? I am not sure how busy IAD is, and also if I will in the same terminal. Thank you

You do not have to go through US Customs on your way out of the US. You do not have to do anything with your baggage. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be on the C/D concourse. You should have enough time.

I have another option of connecting in Toronto YYZ, should I go with IAD or YYZ. Anyone have experience of connection flights from YYZ to Europe?

YYZ will be more complex and difficult.

Hi thanks for your comment. Do you know anything about New Jersey Newark airport then? That's another option besides DC. This is my first time doing connecting flight; what's the min. connecting time I should allow? Thanks

EWR would be fairly easy since both flights would be in Terminal C, but EWR is much more delay-prone than IAD. The procedure is very simple, all you need to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate when you're leaving the country, so really all you need is 30-45 minutes.

  • LGA --> IAD --> SAN on United Airlines

Can someone help: What terminal does United Airlines usually use flying from LGA --> IAD --> SAN? There's a 1h18 stopover, and the passenger has speaks very limited English. We want to prepare ahead of time as much as possible. Any comments would be helpful.

IAD only has one terminal. LGA-IAD will arrive at Concourse A if it's an ERJ-145 or CRJ-200 and will arrive at Concourse C or D if it's a CRJ-700. C/D is connected to A by the mobile lounge and aerotrain. The SAN flight will depart from C or D.

The technical specs you share give me confidence that you know what you're talking about - thank you for your response. Staying in the same terminal makes it immeasurably easier, a relief.

I will be traveling from SFO on United Airlines (Most likely will land on terminal D ) and have only 2 hours to catch another international flight on Saudi Airlines ( which will probably depart from terminal A). Is that enough time? if yes, would you please describe the steps? I will be traveling light with no checked bags, hopefully this will help. Thank you very much

A and D aren't terminals - they are concourses. If you already have your Saudi boarding pass all you have to do is take the AeroTrain or Mobile Lounge from concourse C/D to concourse A. If you don't already have your boarding pass you will take the AeroTrain or Mobile Lounge to the main terminal, exit security, go up to the check-in level, and check in with Saudi, then go through security and take the AeroTrain to concourse A.

Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately, I wont be able to print out the boarding pass for the international flight, I will have to get it from the check-in counter. Does 2-hours connection time seem sufficient to complete the latter procedure you described above? or you would consider it risky? Thanks again for your kind help.

Yes, with no checked bags 2 hours should be enough time. However, it doesn't leave much room for any possible delays.

  • CVG - IAD - MUC (75mins)

Hi, is the following Routing doable? CVG - IAD (United), arriving 4:06 pm IAD - MUC (United), leaving 5:20 pm Thanks in advance, Dominik

Yes, that should be plenty of time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will arrive on A, C, or D and depart from C or D. A is connected to C/D by the mobile lounge and aerotrain inside security.

  • ENOUGH TIME FOR CONNECTION?

I travel from YUL on united 5092 and connect to united 976 on Nov 17 and has a 70 min connection so i if the gate close 30 min before take off i have 40 min will it be long enough time for the connection

    the connection is to dubai

The gate does not close 30 mins before departure, that's just to scare you into not taking your time. 70 minutes should be plenty of time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal so all you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You may arrive on concourse A. You will depart from Concourse C or D. A is connected to C/D by the Aerotrain and mobile lounge inside security.

  • Do we have anough time?

Hi We're coming in on Brussels Airlines SN515 on a friday at 18.55 and flying on with UA647 at 20.30. Do we have to go through immigration, get our bags, recheck them and go through security again? And do we have enough time? Thanks.

Yes, you will arrive at the International Arrivals building, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through Customs, re-check them, go through Security, and then take the Aerotrain to Concourse C or D for your United flight. You should have enough time.

Thanks for answering, I've been to the US many times, but it's my girlfiends first time and she's already stressed about the flight, so I would hate to be stuck in the airport overnight on her first trip overseas :-).

The flight from LPB to IAD -PEK , there is 1 hour 40 mins connection time in IAD , is it need to go to customer to check the luggage ?

LBP is Long Banga, Malaysia. I doubt you are flying all the way to Washington DC to fly back to Asia to Beijing. Where are you coming from? If it's domestic and you purchased one ticket you will not have to claim your bags in IAD.

Sorry - I see that LPB is La Paz, Bolivia. Is that your origin? If so there are no nonstop flights between La Paz and IAD. Where are you entering the US?

is lpb via BOG to IAD by AVIANCA the to PEK by airchina , want to know if need to get luggage out and 1:40 connection time is enough or not

Yes, you will arrive in the International Arrivals Building, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk (if they are tagged through to PEK), then go through security and take the aerotrain to your departure gate in concourse A. If your BOG-IAD and IAD-PEK are on separate tickets you will have to take your bags to the Air China check-in counter and will have a tough time making your connection.

  • Toronto - IAD - PDX Security time needed

I'm American and will be returning from Toronto to Portland, OR with a layover and expected security screening in IAD. Will 90 minutes be sufficient to get through security, re-check bags and board home bound flight? Thanks for your help.

Why do you think you will have to re-check bags or go through security screening in IAD? Are you flying Porter from Toronto? Because Toronto YYZ has US Immigration preclearance. What airlines are you flying?

I am arriving from Ottawa Canada with a 45 minute layover to catch flight to San Diego. Is that enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Ottawa. If you arrive in Concourse A it is connected to C/D where you will depart by the AeroTrain and mobile lounge.

    Thanks ZAP!

How long is needed to connect between incoming from Detroit to outgoing to london

What airlines? Were tickets purchased together? If both flights are on United 30 to 40 minutes should be sufficient.

My mother will be flying from Roissy CDG United 914 and make a connection to Tampa United 1602. I understand she will have to go thru immigr and customs, but will she have to leave the security zone for connection and reenter thru TSA again. She is 84 and absolutely paniqued by the idea that she won't go thru her beloved Atlanta airport this time. can you tell me what will be her itinerary in Dulles

Yes, she will have to go through security again after she re-checks her bags with United after clearing customs. However, she will be in a separate facility in the basement of the D concourse so there's no way for her to get lost, she just has to follow the signs for connecting passengers and she will go through security.

Thank you ZAP. I have printed the airport map for her and I will be following her on the phone when she arrives

Is 1 hour between terminal c to a enough time to connect?

IAD only has one terminal A and C are just concourses (gate areas). Yes, that should be plenty of time. A and C are connected inside security by the Aerotrain.

Is 2hrs 54 mins enough connection time ?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. You will arrive in concourse A and depart from concourse B, which are connected directly. If you purchased your tickets together your bags will be checked through to IST in Roanoke and you won't have to do anything with your bags at IAD.

Many thanks for speedy reply. I know how long it took arriving from South Africa and was worried that the same would happen on the way out.
