Do you have to go through security when transferring between the c and d terminal at Dulles?

No, concourses C and D are just two sides of the same building.

Arrive from Dxb via UA 977 and have to connect to Toronto via UA 5093 Layover was though 1hr05 min. But incoming is delayed by more than an hour. SO what are the options please

Assuming you don't make the connection, ask to be rebooked on the next flight to Toronto. There is one at 12:28 PM, but it is full. You can try to be rebooked to Toronto connecting in Chicago or Newark or maybe they can transfer you to DC-Reagan airport and book you on another airline there. There is also a 5:05 PM IAD-YYZ flight but it also appears to be full.

Thanks for this quick reply. Would UA provide staying facility till thy sort our connection to Toronto

  • 49 minute layover

Im flying from San Diego to Toronto and connecting from IAD; will a 49 minute layover be enough?

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time and you are flying the same airline for both legs.

We arrive from cancun (united airlines) and transfer to British airways flight - we have 2 hours to do this connection. Do we have to go through security and must we reclaim and recheck luggage? Thank you

Yes, you will arrive in concourse C/D, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags (if you purchased two separate tickets you will have to take your bags to the British Airways counter in the main terminal), then go through security and to your departure gate on concourse B. 2 hours is very marginal with regards to being enough time to make this connection.

hi, I fly from Orlando to London on United all the way I have 50 mins between landing in IAD and leaving for LHR will this be enough time for a family of 5? Anything I need to be aware of? Thanks

That should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both be on the C/D concourse.

  • Can I greet my family on a layover?

Family arrives tonight at 8:10 into IAD from Frankfort. They are transfering to Denver. Am I correct that they will go through customs and I could greet them at the International terminal afterwards. As they will have to go to their next gate and security again. Is this how it work? Thanks so much!

If their flight from Frankfurt is on United they will not arrive at the International Arrivals Building but instead go through Immigration and customs in the Terminal C facility. If they do arrive a the IAB, then yes, they could exit the IAB and meet you.

On my last international flight transfers had a different process and routing then those exiting at iad. As I was exiting I do not know the process for those transferring. It might be best to talk to them when they arrive and confirm

They are flying United. What would I do to greet them on United?

The place I was thinking of meeting them is that area right after going through customs. The main question I have is - everyone comes out that exit and then has to go through security again. Right? My family doesn't know that I am trying to greet them. There has been an emergency and the trip is a last minute trip. Wanted to greet them and offer support in between their flights.

That is incorrect. United transiting passengers are processed in their facility in the C and D concourse and go back through security there and then directly back into C/D. They do not exit into a public area.

  • Connection time from domestic UA to Korean Air

I am arriving at 11:22am on United. Will I have enough time to checkin for a Korean international flight departing at 1:35pm. I am flying first on Korean.

Without checked bags that is comfortably enough time. With checked bags it is cutting it close.

  • Flying to IAD from Frankfurt

Hi, My sister is flying from Frankfurt to IAD tomorrow (flight 933, arrives in IAD at 8.10pm); she has a tourist visa and a bag that she will check in. Her next flight is IAD to San Francisco (flight 1235) that departs IAD at 9.50pm. Are there any tips for her to make it ok? As I understood from reading other posts, she will have to get her luggage and then check it in again? Her tickets were purchased together. Thanks so much! This forum is really helpful!

Yes, you have it correct, no specific tips. She will arrive in Terminal C/D and use the United facility there to clear Immigration and customs, so then she can go through security and right back into C/D when she's done. Here flight to SFO will also leave from C or D.

  • Flying in from Toronto to IAD and connecting to Aruba

We are a large group of 16 family members flying out on New Years day to Aruba, connecting in Washington. We are flying with United, on one ticket. We have only 50 min connection time. Should I be worried.

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If your flight from Toronto is on-time you will have plenty of time.

  • Flying in from San Diego and going through to Toronto

Hey there, I fly in from San Diego and arrive in IAD at 9:05 Pm. I then need to catch my flight to Toronto which leaves at 10:08 PM. Is this enough time? I'm just not sure if I need to go through customs/immigration and re-check in bags when I arrive in IAD. Thanks!

You do not go through US Immigration when leaving the US. All you have to di is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

I have to go through US custom and find baggage and re check with United airlines right? And will i be go through us custom quick enough? I am not us citizen.

Yes, you will go through US Immigration and Customs in Washington, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk. Yes, you have enough time.

  • Cutting it close?

Hey there! I'm not very experienced at this so any extra detail/tip would be welcome. My connection is from Munich-15:30 (Lufthansa) to Atlanta-17:43 (Delta). How short am I on time? Will I need to wait for my luggage on the conveyor belt thing and have it checked and re-checked again? If I do miss it, will they re-book my flight or will I need to buy a new ticket? Will warning the airport staff in advance help? And lastly, would it be helpful to ask airport staff for help or am I better off just figuring stuff out on my own? Your time will be very much appreciated, thank you!

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage to go through US Customs. If you purchased your tickets together and your bags are tagged through to Atlanta you can re-check them at the transfer desk after you go through customs. Otherwise you will have to take them to the Delta counter on the departure level of the terminal and pay a checked bag fee. You should have enough time.

Thanks ZAP! They were purchased separately, so I assume there is no way of making them tagged no. Would you kindly also comment on the ticket re-book possibility? Thanks.

Yes, since you purchased separate tickets you will have to take them to the delta ticket counter to re-check them. If you do miss your connection, since you purchased separate tickets, you will have to stand by for the next flight with availability and may have to pay a fee in order to do so.

I am flying to Dulles with US Airways and land at 3:40pm from Charlotte, NC and flying to South Africa with South African airways at 5:40pm. Is this enough time to collect bags, get to the gate etc?? Do you know which terminals/concourses these different flights land at and fly from?

Did you purchase your tickets together or separately? if you purchased together you will not have to claim your bags at Dulles and only walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both be in the A/B concourse building. If you did book two separate tickets, you still probably have enough time, but you have to hurry. IAD only has one terminal.

They were purchased separately. Would you have to exit the gates into the main terminal to collect bags and then check-in, in the main terminal and then go to your gate? Do they have check in desks for connections?

You will have to go to the main terminal, claim your bags, go up to the departure level and to the SAA counter to re-check them. You will be hard-pressed to do that in time, but I think it is possible. However, one other thing you can try is bring your SAA confirmation along when you check your bags with US Airways in Charlotte. They may be able to check your bags through to South Africa for you as US Airways and SAA do have an interline baggage agreement.

  • Domestic Arrival to International Departure

Will be arriving from Denver, CO at 8:39pm leaving for Dubai at 10:15pm. How easy/difficult is it to get from the domestic arrivals gates to the international departures gates? Will this be sufficient time?

IAD does not have separate "domestic" and "international" departure gates. If both of your flights are on United they will both be in the C/D concourse, which is one long building. You have plenty of time.
