Hi I am flying from New York to Manchester, via IAD airport. I only have 45 minutes in between flights. Would this be enough time to transfer? Thanks

Yes, as long as your flight isnt delayed.

  • Connecting United flight from Dubai to Nashville will have 75 mins

I am a US Citizen returning back to us. My quiestion is will I have enough time to clear customs and make my Nashville flight, I have 75 min but will not have any checked luggage. The arrival time is 6:55am. Not sure what the trafic is in customs at that time. Please advise I will be flying out United as well.

United uses Midfield Concourse C/D (C & D gates) All international arrivals at IAD are being transported to the International Arrivals Building (IAB) at the west end of the main terminal for TSA clearance. IAB streamlines its passenger flow from the Arrivals Hall all the way through to the passenger greeting area (and down the escalator to the underground AeroTrain for connecting to Concourses A, B & C. After customs clearance: If your connecting flight is out of D gates, you cannot use the AeroTrain (serving only A, B & C gates), but need to take the Mobile Lounge shuttle at Main Terminal's lower level to gates D1-32. 75 minutes is tight, but should be doable if incoming flight is on time.

Modern is incorrect. You will likely go throu I,migration in united's facility in C/D. You will have a tough time making this connection in 75 mins but it is possible.

  • Is 1 hr connection time enough?

United just switched my flights so my family of 4 has only 59 minutes to connect from an inbound flight from Greenville to outbound to Heathrow. Right now it appears those flights land at A4 and depart from C7. At 8:50pm, is 1 hour sufficient time to make that connection? Thank you!

The gates flights use change from day-to-day, but you will likely arrive in concourse A and depart from Concourse C or D. Yes, if your first flight is on-time you should have enough time. The concourses are connected by the AeroTrain and mobile lounges inside security.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your help

I need to clear immigration and re-check bags and security on Fri 23 May 11.20am - heard horror stories about Dulles - is this likely to be peak time /doable? and will I need to go to a different terminal? Thanks

    1. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text, which addresses "Terminal layout of IAD Airport, Important Notices, Getting around, International Arrivals, Transportation/ Connections, Main Terminal & Midfield Concourse Details". NOTE: If both legs of your journey are bought on one ticket, your bags will be transferred thereafter to your connecting flight. If not, you will have to claim bags after customs and re-check them in with United, taking extra time. As you will be shuttled to the Main terminals on arrival at IAD, and after customs need to get to either Concourses/ gates D or C (United), your stated time is tight, but fortunately you don't arrive during rush hours and May is still pre-main season.

Many thanks will check it out - it is one booking all with united also notice it is memorial day weekend so I will keep my fingers crossed

Memorial Day Weekend is not a heavy travel period. IAD only has one terminal. If your international flight is on United you will likely use their dedicated immigration facility in Concourse D.

  • Time between connecting flights (domestic to international)

I'm flying in from Atlanta (with Delta) at 4.40pm and I have to catch another flight to London at 6.30pm (with British Airways) - do I need to claim my luggage and check in again? If I do, would 1h50min be sufficient for me to do that? Thanks!!

I would also like to mention that my tickets were not bought on a single reservation. Thanks for your help!

Both British & Delta use Midfield Concourse B/C (B gates). As you booked separate tickets, you will need to claim your bags first at the Main terminal and re-check them in with British. A walkway connects these concourses to the main terminal, as well as separate AerTrain shuttles. Your transfer time should be enough. To get a good idea of the terminal layout, etc. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/iad then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

thanks so much for your help!! :)

  • 1H20M Layover time in IAD
    Feb 11, 2014

We are thinking to book UA804 from Tokyo JP and connect UA3335 in IAD to PHL, but the layover time in IAD is only 1 hour 20 mins. I think we'll have to go through the customs in IAD. Will we have enough time? Thanks.

Yes, you will go through immigration in United facility in concourse D, then go through customs, re-check your bags, and go through security. Then you will likely have to take the Plane Train to Terminal A where your flight to PHL will depart. It will be hard to do that in 80 minutes but it is doable.

Sorry, I meant Concourse A, not "Terminal A".

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know that we'll need to re-check our bag (we only took direct flights before for international).

  • CHANGING AIRLINES AT IAD

I'm arriving from Dubai on Emirates Airlines, must clear customs, then board a US airways domestic flight. Does US Airways re-check baggage in the customs area for continuing travel, or must I go to the ticket counter in the main terminal?

Were your tickets bought on one reservation or separate. If they were on the same reservation Emirates should be able to check your bags through to US Airways and then you can drop at the re-check desk, Otherwise it's not too difficult to just take your baggage up to the departure level and the US Airways ticket counter.

  • connecting from Delta flight to a Qatar flight intl flight

Hi, I'm flying on separate tickets from ATL on Delta to IAD and then on Qatar Airlines to Doha from IAD. Assuming I'll have to collect luggage and recheck in with Qatar airlines. Can anyone confirm this. I know Delta does not check luggage through on separate tickets anymore. Do the airlines depart or arrive from same terminal? Thanks!

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage and re-check it . IAD only has one terminal, so all you will have to do is bring your baggage up to the departure level and to the Qatar Airways check-in counter.

I am flying from Pittsburg to (IAD) I have 55 minutes to make next flight to RDU Will I have to change concourses

It depends on what type of aircraft are operating your flights. Small regional jets (CRJ-200 and E145) and turboprob aircraft operate from Concourse A, larger regional jets (CRJ-700 and E-170) and mainline aircraft (737, A320, and larger) operate from Concourses C and D. Regardless you should have enough time.

  • Will I have enough time?

I am booking a trip to Rome and the flight I'm looking at will have a 46 min layover at IAD before the flight to Rome. Is this enough time to make that flight?

What airlines are you flying? Where is your flight to IAD coming from?

We would be coming from Charleston, SC on United.

It's possible, all you will have to do in IAD is to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, but you will likely arrive in A and depart from D, which requires taking the Aerotrain. It doesn't leave much time for any delays, however if you miss your connection United does have later flights from IAD to Europe that you can be rebooked on and then sent onward to Rome from there.

  • 1 hour connection and pick up infant
    Jan 15, 2014

Hello, I am dropping my baby off at his grandparents and trying to pick him back up during a 1 hour layover on UAL from PHX to IAD to BOS. Obviously, I'm quite concerned about being able to exit the terminal get to the main terminal, pick up my son and get back through security in time to make the flight in less than an hour. Do they still issue gate passes so his grandparents can meet me at the gate with him? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

They usually only issue gate passes to people dropping off or picking up children or handicapped persons. You should have allowed yourself more time.

please let me know if the time is enough for transfer, never been to this airport and it made me anxious, thanks for your help.

by the way, I will be flying through united, thank you!

Well, IAD is a more simple airport than EWR. You will probably arrive in concourse A (but could arrive in C or D) you will depart from concourse C or D. C and D are just two sides of the same long building and A is connected to them by the AeroTrain and mobile lounge inside security. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Thank you so much for your fast response. My arrival time in IAD is 7:25, how is the security around that time, I am worried it might be busy and the line is long, Thank you for your help.

7:25 AM or PM? You won't have to go through security at IAD.

It is 7:25 AM. So my bag won't be check anymore? Thanks again! Best Regards

If you check a bag in Newark the next time you'll see it is in Seattle

  • 2 hour connection - YYZ IAD LAS

I'm arriving from Toronto (YYZ) and will have gone through pre-clearance in Toronto prior to arriving at IAD. I land 5:20pm and depart 7:20pm for Vegas (LAS). Will a 2 hour layover be sufficient? Thanks!

Yes, that should be plenty of time. If both of your tickets are on the same airline/alliance all you will have to do at IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Yes I forgot to mention I'll be flying from United on both legs of the trip and will be booking it in a single ticket. Given this information, will this still leave me plenty of time to get between the concourses/gates? Thanks.

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

  • Connection time 1 hr 15 min - Frankfurt
    Jan 6, 2014

I fly out of Houston (IAH) on United to IAD then have 1 hour 15 min until my flight on Lufthansa leaves for Frankfurt. Will I have enough time to make my connection? Will I already have cleared security for international travel in Houston, or will I do so at IAD? I know I'll probably arrive at Concourse D, but then am not sure where to go from there. Appreciate any advice!

There is no special security for International travel on flights departing the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate (in C or D) to your departure gate in B.

  • International to Domestic Connection

Hi. I arrive on a flight with SAA, then have to clear customs and recheck in before catching a United flight two hours later. I'm a little concerned about the time. This is do-able? the tickets were gifts and not changable. And what terminals would I be going between? Thanks!

If no serious delay in arrival, you should be able to make connection. In any case, after customs clearance & baggage re-check you will need to take the shuttle bus your connecting flight. (United uses Concourse C & D - I found no listing of SAA.

IAD only has one terminal. You will clear US Immigration in the International Arrivals Building, then re-check your bags and go through security and take the AirTrain or Mobile Lounge to Concourse A, C ,or D. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time but won't have much time to spare.
