I arrive at Dulles via Toronto to connect with South African Airlines to Accra, what is the distance between gates? On returning from Accra to Dulles from South African Airlines my connection to Ottawa is only 1 hour, is that enough time to pass US customs and catch my flight?

You will arrive in the A, C or D concourse and depart from the B concourse. You probably have enough time on your way to Accra as you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Ottawa. However 1 hour is DEFINITELY not enough time on your return.

  • Dublin to Seattle via IAD
    Jul 9, 2015
Hi, I arrive at IAD from DUB with Aer lingus and have 2 hours to catch a connecting flight to Seattle with United Airlines. Flights were booked together. Is my suitcase going to be checked through to the Seattle flight automatically? Do I have enough time to get through security and catch the flight? Where do I go from the arrival gate to catch the United Airline flight? Thanks.

Yes, you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Dublin and your bags will be transferred in IAD automatically. You do not have to go through security at IAD. You just have to go from your arrival gate on concourse A or B to your departure gate in concourse C or D using the AeroTrain or mobile lounge.

  • Connecting to an SAS flight
    Jul 9, 2015
Arriving from Tampa on United at 4:12 and need to connect to our SAS flight for Copenhagen at 5:15. Is that enough time? Are bags checked in Tampa all the way through to Copenhagen or do we have to recheck them in Dulles?

Assuming both tickets were purchased on the same reservation your bags will be checked through to Copenhagen and you don't have to do anything with them in Dulles. You will arrive in the C/D concourse and depart from the B concourse. Follow signs to concourse B after you arrive. You will have to take the AeroTrain or mobile lounge but you will not have to go through security. You have enough time if your flight from Tampa is on-time.

  • Question re customs
    Jul 2, 2015
We are flying into Dulles from Dakar at 6:25 am. I need to book a flight to Tampa, There is one leaving at 8:20 am. Will this be enough time to go through customs and recheck our bags. We are US citizens.

It's possible, but not foolproof. The bag cutoff at IAD is 45 minutes, so you have to be at the check in counter by 7:35. That leaves 70 minutes to arrive, go through Immigration, claim your bag, go through customs, and get to the check-in desk.

Is 1 hour enough time to connect in IAD when arriving from Toronto and connecting to Dubai flight?

Yes, that is enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Toronto and both flights should be on the C/D concourse. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • what terminal?
    Jun 30, 2015
how do I know what terminal to go to when I land from DFW for a connection flight to Clarksburg WV

Washington Dulles only has one terminal. You will arrive in the C or D concourse if your flight from IAD is on United. Your flight to Clarksburg will depart from the Z gates.

  • Connection from London flyinh on yo Orkando

Hi. I am flying into Dules with United from London and changing to fly on to Orlando. United have allowed 1hr 15 mins. Is that enough

That's 15 minutes shorter than the recommended time. However, you can make it if everything goes smoothly and your flight from London is on-time.

I am connecting from Chicago on a Southwest flight to a KLM Amsterdam bound flight with a total of 2h 10m connecting time. Will it be enough time for picking up bags, re-check and security?

It's possible, but doesn't leave any time for any delays on the Southwest flight or if your bags are slow to come out.

buying tickets to fly to DUB on Aer Lingus website will travel from MSP to IAD on United then on to DUB on Aer Lingas. will we need to recheck luggage and will 1 hr 20 min be enough time

If you are purchasing two separate tickets you will have to claim your bags and re-check. It will be hard to do that in 1 hr 20 mins. I would either purchase your tickets on a single reservation or not check bags. In that case, you can make it.

  • Short Layover Question
    Jun 27, 2015
Incoming on domestic US Air at 9:20 pm, departing BA to London at 10:25 pm. Do I have enough connect with checked baggage? without checked baggage?

Yes, all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • 50 mn transit
    Jun 26, 2015
I am about to book a flight from austin to washington transfering to Paris. The connection at IAD is 50 mn. Is that enough time? Or do i need to recheck my luggage in IAD ?

If you buy the tickets on a single reservation you won't have to do anything with your bags at IAD - just go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. It's enough time in that case.

  • DC to Dubai in 45 minutes?
    Jun 25, 2015
Flying in from Chicago, arrive at 9:18 pm. Would it be possible to make a flight to Dubai at 10:05 pm? I am just carrying on one bag - no checked luggage.

Yes, that's definitely possible. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both on the C/D concourse.

  • Can I make this connection? Will it be stressful?
    Jun 22, 2015
I am considering buying a ticket that would be leaving Tuesday morning from YUL (Montreal). The destination is CAN (Cancun Mexico). I will have to make a connection in IAD 7:45 to 8:56 (1 hour and 11 min). I am wondering whether it makes sense to book this flight. What will I have to do- go through customs, recheck my baggage? etc...

Cancun is CUN. CAN is Guangzhou, China. Yes, that is enough time for your connection. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. There is a chance you could arrive in concourse A. it is connected to concourses C and D where you will depart by the AeroTrain and Mobile lounge inside security. You don't have to do anything with your baggage. You will go through Mexican immigration and customs when you get to Mexico.

Plenty of people (ZAP!) who clearly know the system - I am booked on United through to London from LA - I arrive at Dulles at 2114 and depart at 2200 - is this a simple doable transfer (ie no security & same terminal?) thanks you

Yes, that is possible. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both on the C/D concourse. Of course it doesn't leave much time to spare if your flight from LA is delayed and that flight to London is the last flight to Europe of the evening.

Yep - understood - was concerned there would be security or inter-terminal transfers. Will hope United are on time that day Thanks for the quick response Zap! This forum is all the better for your continuous input Cheers

  • Connecting via Dubai for EWR with 1h22m
    Jun 15, 2015
Arriving from IAD on a sunday morning at 6:50am. My flight from IAD to EWR got changed to an 8:12am departure to EWR, so essentially 1h22m to connect. Both trips were booked on same itinerary. Is this enough time and are there tips to speed up the process? What are chances bags won't make the connection? Both my sister and I are US citizens.

Sorry, arriving from Dubai on the sunday morning at 6:50am, connecting to EWR at 8:12am.

It's less than the recommended time but that early in the morning it's definitely possible to make it.
