Hi guys, I am travelling with my girlfriend from Brussels to Montreal on United Airlines with a layover of 120 minutes at IAD airport. Is the connection time alright? How does it work since I am Indian and my girlfriend is French? Do we need to leave the airport and are any sorts of passport stamps expected? Thanks, Sree

one more thing, the conencting flight from Washington is on MESA airlines operated as United Express. Do we need to recheck our bags? Wewould be reaching at 2:20 pm and our connecting flight is at 5 pm. Thanks :)

You will arriv ein the C/D concourse, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have enough time. If she is a first time ESTA user then neither of you can use the automated kiosks at IAD, you both need to see the agent to clear US Immigration. You will need a US Transit Visa unless she already has one.

HEy, I'll be travelling from Montreal (YUL) to Honolulu with a 65 min layover at IAD. Do I need to claim and re-check my luggage? Also, do I have enough time considering that I can go through customs when leaving Montreal?

Since you pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal all you have to do at IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Hello, I am flying from Geneva, Switzerland to IAD. I arrive at 2:50 and my connecting flight to Denver leaves at 4:08. I am a US citizen, if that counts for anything, so do you think this is enough time to get through CBD, baggage claim, recheck my bag, TSA, and find my gate? thanks.

That is just enough time if everything goes smoothly and both of your flights are on United.

Hello, I'm booking separate flights from ATL to IAD (Delta) and IAD to KEF (Icelandair). Delta flight scheduled to arrive @ 11:15AM, and Iclandair flight leaves @ 2:10PM. There will be checked bags. Will this allow enough time under normal circumstances? Thanks!

That is barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.

What are steps I need to take, directions I need to go to ensure that things go as perfectly as possible once we arrive? Booking is a done deal, as I could find no better alternative. Thank you.

You need to go to the main terminal, claim your bags, go up to the departure level, re-check your bags with Icelandair, and go through security and to your departure gate in Concourse A or B.

Thank you, and one final question: Can my travel partner stay in the "secure" side of the airport with our carry-on, etc. and go sit at the Icelandair departure gate, while I run and retrieve/check bags to save time and processing all our stuff back through TSA? Or do they need to see her passport etc. at the bag check/ticket counter?

Will be arriving united air at 11:20 a.m.need to claim bags and get to british airways to recheck for 6:30 pm flight. How difficult is it to get from baggage claim area up to the main terminal to recheck bags. Have separate Titickets with united and british air. Also, should I have enough time to do this?

If your United flight is domestic then it's literally just up an escalator. The British Airways check in desk probably won't open until about 3 PM.

Thanks! And also thank you giving me the time BA would open for baggage drop!

I am a Nigerian passport holder with a b1/b2 visa. I have a flight into IAD from CDG with Airfrance that arrives at 4:15pm. My next flight is to TPA with United at 5:50pm. Both flights were booked separately. I do not plan to have a checked in bag and I also plan to check in online. I will like to know if you think I will still have enough time to make my flight to TPA, incase I need to clear immigration. Thank you.

With no checked bags you can make this if everything goes smoothly. You will need to clear US Immigration, customs, and security and then then go to concourse C/D on the AeroTrain or mobile lounge.

  • 55 minute layover!!

I'm flying to Columbia, SC with a connection in IAD. There's only a 55 minute layover. Does anyone think it is possible for me to catch my flight or is it to close to call??

Where are you flying into IAD from? Are both flights on United/United Express?

I am flying in from Cleveland and yes they're both on UA

Yes, that should be enough time.

I have friends coming from Addis Ababa & they will be having a layover in IAD for eight hours. (United Airlines). Are they allowed to leave the airport and come see family members and return at check in time or do they have to stay at the airport during the layover.

Yes, they are allowed to leave the airport. Once they clear US Immigration and Customs they are in the US and free to go where they want. They will also be outside security at that point.

  • Heathrow - IAD - Bogota

Hi, I am taking a flight from London to IAD with United and then on to Bogota with Avianca (all on the same ticket) Will I have to collect my bags at IAD and check in at the Avianca desk for the flight to Bogota or will it all go straight through? I have no seat booked with Avianca so I'm assuming I might have to pick up my bags, clear customs, leave the airport and check in with Avianca. My layover time is around 4 hours so no major rush, just not sure what I'll have to do and United aren't very clear! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, in IAD you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk and go through security and to your departure gate. United may be able to issue you your Avianca boarding pass in London. If it can't you can get it from either the Avianca check-in counter or Avianca gate at IAD.

Hi there, I have 50 minutes to my connection on United (Mesa), is this enough? Thx!

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in IAD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

  • Global Entry at IAD on UAL

I'm using Global Entry for the first time - I understand I'll be directed to the kiosks, re-check my bags, and have to clear TSA - is there a Global Entry/TSA Pre line when I go through TSA again? Is it different for UAL at IAD? Thanks!

There is no separate pre-check line at the security checkpoint for connecting passengers in the midfield C/D immigration facility.

  • Airline changed times...will we still have enough time for connecting?

Hello! I am traveling to DisneyWorld with my husband and two small children (4 and 2). We will be coming into IAD airport from Pittsburgh on United and will be taking another United flight out to Orlando. United changed our departure/arrival times from Pittsburgh to arrival at 11:42am at IAD and then departure at 12:35pm from IAD. Will this be sufficient? I am terrified that with little kids who walk slow, and we might not be able to make it to the second flight. Thank you so much!

Yes, that is enough time if the first flight is on-time.

  • No boarding pass for final leg

We are flying into IAD from CPH on SAS. Our itinerary continues with a UA flight, but we were not issued a boarding pass for the UA flight at our origin. They said it had to be obtained at Dulles and our luggage is only checked as far as Dulles. The IAD website indicates that we will be processed through customs in the C concourse, but is that where our luggage will be? If it is only tagged for Dulles and not for our final destination, will it go to IAB? And where will we check in for the UA flight and get boarding passes? Is it possible to do this without going to the United ticket counter in the Main Terminal?

If it is only tagged to IAD then it will go to the IAB and you will have to re-check it at the United check in desk. The IAB is right next to the main terminal.
