What's happen if I missed my connection saying that the immigration/custom takes too long? I'm flying from Canada and need to change plane in IAD. I will be flying with United for all flights. Is United will re-booked without fees?

Yes, if you miss your connection due to immigration delays you will be rebooked without a change fee on the next available flight. However, note that when coming from most places in Canada you pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Canada.

I was wondering where I will have to clear security and customs if I begin my journey in Columbus, flying to Heathrow via Washington? I only have an hour stopover time in Washington and I'm concerned i could get held up at customs or security?

You do not go through US Customs or Security when leaving the US. All you have to do in Washington on your way to London is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Hello, I´m flying United from Mexico City to Montreal connecting in IAD in two weeks. Is1hr 50mins enough time to go through immigration and customs?

Yes, that should be enough time.

I am arriving from Toronto (I believe we are pre-screened at YYZ so we arrive as a domestic passenger) and have a connecting flight to HNL (Honolulu) within 85 minutes of arriving at IAD. Is this connection time to tight? We are flying with United and noticed most of their connection flights to HNL were right tight in time.

That should be plenty of time. You will pre-clear everything in Toronto so all you have to do in IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You may arrive in concourse A. It is connected to concourse C or D where you will depart by the AeroTrain and Mobile Lounge, which run inside security.

IAD only has one terminal. Yes, you should have enough time for your transfer.

Hi there I've never flown into IAD before and my connection time from IAD to Duabi is only 1:15 mins I don't have checked luggage is this enough time? I'm so worried that my arrival and departure gates will be in different terminals/concourses

IAD only has one Terminal. All gates are connected inside security. Worst case is you will have to take a short shuttle or train ride to concourse C/D where your flight to Dubai will depart (assuming you are flying United to Dubai). You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto.

  • Layover from YOW to SJU, and SJU to YYZ
    Mar 5, 2015

Hello, I'm about to book a flight from YOW to SJU (YOW to IAD (UA3375) then IAD to SJU (UA1202)) and the return is from SJU to YYZ (SJU to IAD (UA1722), then IAD to YYZ (UA3371). The two trips have an one hour and 51 min layover, respective. I'm not sure whether this is enough time (given the flights are all on time). Are you able to help verify whether the gate to SJU in IAD is in a close enough area, that I could make the flight? Or is it cutting it too close? Any help is greatly appreciated!

That should be possible. On your way to SJU you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Ottawa. You may have to take a short shuttle or train ride from concourse A where you may arrive to concourse C or D where you will depart. All gates at IAD are connected inside security You have enough time both ways if your flights are on-time.

Thank you so much!!! Here's hoping it all goes well :)

  • Do I have enough time to make my connection?

I don't know the first thing about this airport. I am arriving from Buffalo ny to IAD at 4:19 and then my international flight to Dakar, Senegal leaves at 5:40. Will 1.5 hours be enough time to get to where I need to go?

Yes, if you purchased your tickets together your baggage will be transferred and you just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All gates at IAD are connected inside security.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it!

I'll fly on UA632 from ORD arrive IAD at 11:39am, not sure which terminal, probably B12. Then my flight to PEK (UA807) leaves @ 12:40pm. Do I have enough time for connection?

ORD-IAD will arrive in the C or D concourse. UA807 will depart from the same concourses. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

    Thanks so much!

  • Connection thorugh IAD

My daughter is arriving at IAD on United from AMS at 3:00PM and then meeting and departing with us to MCO at 5:05PM. I know she has to go through customs before meeting us, but will she have to go all the way to IAB? Or would she be making use of United's dedicated facility saving time? It seems like 2 hours should be sufficient time, but...

She will likely use the dedicated United facility. Sometimes United passengers are taken to the IAB if United's facility is too crowded (so to save them time). 2 hours should be enough.

Hi I'm not from the USA. I'm flying from CRW to EWR on march 7th and have to change planes at IAD, I have 40 minutes to change. Will that be enough? And do you know if the arrival gate and departure gate will be in the same terminal? Next question: on march 15th I'll fly from BRU (Belgium) to CRW and have to change planes again at IAD, this time I will have 2,5 hours. Will that be enough to go trough immigration (- non US residence) and catch my plane? All flights are with United Airlines. Thank you so much!

IAD only has one terminal. 40 minutes is barely enough time if your flights are located on different concourses. It should be plenty of time if they are on the same concourse. There's a good chance both flights will be in concourse A. yes, 2.5 hours will be plenty of time to go through US Immigration for your flight from BRU.

Thank you! I changed my ticket and now have 3 hours to change planes instead of 40 minutes. I do have another question though, what would happen/what should I do it my first flight got cancelled or delayed and I miss my connecting flight? (for both the CRW-EWR and BRU-CRW trips) I don't fly very often and always get really nervous thinking about the fact that that could happen..

If a flight gets canceled the airline will re-book you the best way they can. Depending on when the flight gets canceled, United also flies to BRU from Chicago, you could be rerouted there.

you can always reach out to either airport on facebook or Twitter and they'll happily give you their best advice I've made 40 minute connections in IAD in different terminals, but it helps to know where you're going before you land. Sometimes CRW Flights will go into terminal C instead of A, same for EWR. IAD has 4 "terminals" which is really two halves of two long buildings. If you get delayed in CRW and miss the connection, you'll likely know before you ever leave CRW.

Hello, I am traveling with Lufthansa ,Munich to IAD at 7pm and my next flight with united at 8:30pm for SFO. All ticket purchased together. Is that time limit is enough?

That should barely be enough time. You will arrive in the International Arrivals Building, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and take the Aerotrain to concourse C or D where your flight to SFO will depart.

Is there airlines staff didn't help to do things fast? Its their responsibility they are selling tickets within this kind of time frame.

One more question do I need to stand in line again to get bording pass or I get my bording pass before where my journey start, since my ticket purchased together? TIA

Lufthansa should issue you both boarding passes in Munich.

  • 1,5 hrs layover enough for Dublin (DUB) to Koxville (TYS) connection

First timer to Dulles International airport: Wondering if I have enough time to connect between the following flights: Arriving Sun 3/22, 3:30PM from Dublin (DUB), UA127 Departing: Sun 3/22, 5:09 PM to Knoxville (TYS), UA5247 Return flight Arriving FRI, 3/27, 8:50PM from Knoxville (TYS), UA3401 Departing FRI, 3/27, 10:15PM to Dublin (DUB), UA126 Thanks for the information

Both connections leave plenty of time. Since on your way to Knoxville you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. All you have to do in Dulles both ways is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you for the reassuring reply, great service

Arriving to IAD on United Airlines 3786 Flying out on United Airlines 3352 Will this be enough time? Do I need to change terminal? Is there a shuttle and do I need to go through security again?

IAD only has one terminal. All gates are connected inside security. You will arrive in concourse C or D and depart from A C or D. If you have to go to A, it is connected to C and D by the Aerotrain and mobile lounge. Just follow the signs. You will not have to go through security. If your first flight is on-time you have enough time.

  • Connection flight IAD from San Juan to Toronto Canada

Hi I have a connecting flight with United Airlines, flying in from San Jaun to Toronto Canada with a connection time of 1hr 28 minutes at Dulles. How easy is it to find gates? Will I be needing to take a shuttle? Never been to Dulles (IAD)...Thanks!!!

All gates at IAD are connected inside security. You will arrive in concourse C or D and depart from A, C or D. C and D are just two sides of the same building. A is connected to C and D by the aerotrain and mobile lounge. Just follow the signs to A upon arrival if your departure gate is in A. (you can check on United.com or the United app).
