  • Cancun to JOhannesburg via IAD, no check-in luggage
    Jul 13, 2016

Hi there. I will be connecting via IAD, landing on United from Cancun at 16:20 and departing on South African Airways (SAA) at 17:40 (thus 80 minutes layover). I will have no checked-in luggage, only my carry-on. Will I still need to go through customs and passport control, or can I do an international connection and proceed to my SAA gate directly? Both tickets are separate, but I will have my boarding pass already printed from online for the SAA flight. Thanks.

Yes, you will still have to go through US Immigration and Customs and Security. This is a difficult connection.

  • Is 5 hours 15 min enough to catch a separaiite flight (not connecting)

My flight with United airlines is departing from London heathrow airport and is arriving at IAD on October 25, 2016 at 11:05 a.m. I need to catch a separate flight at IAD with Southwest Airlines to Atlanta and it departs at 4:20 pm on the same day (October 25, 2016). This is NOT a connecting flight that was bought along with my flight from London. I bought the flight to Atlanta separately. I think I will have to go through customs and get my luggage after I land at IAD. Then, I will have to re-enter IAD, re-check my bags and go through TSA for my flight to Atlanta. I have 5 hours and 15 minutes between the time the flight from London (United) lands and the flight to Atlanta (Southwest) departs. This is without accounting for possible delays. Since these two flights are completely separate, do you think 5 hours and 15 min is enough time for me to leave the international terminal and re-enter the domestic terminal to catch my flight to Atlanta? What are some tips you have that can help me make this process more efficient? Thank you!

Yes, that should be plenty of time. IAD is not a delay prone airport.

  • Changing planes at IAD from Barcelona to Chicago on linked tickets

My daughter is flying through tomorrow and her flight from Barcelona is showing as delayed, cutting down her transfer time. She will arrive terminal C on United and depart terminal C on United. She has just under two hours if her Barcelona flight is not delayed any further. She has to go through customs, recheck her bag with United customs, and then go through security again - right? Will she have enough time?

Yes, that is enough time and yes you have the procedure correct.

Hi. I will arrive to IAD-United Airlines at 4:06 pm. I have a connecting international flight to RUH which departs at 6:00 pm. Wii I be able to catch my international flight? Also, what are the terminals of both airlines in IAD?

IAD only has one terminal. Are your tickets on the same reservation or two separate reservations?

I am flying from Paris to IAD and then to South America. Is 3 hours enough time to get through immigration, customs and security to board my flight to South America? Thank you.

Yes, that should be enough time.

We are planning to fly with my elderly mother to Florida, and will be requiring wheelchair assistance because she is non ambulatory. Is there an assistance center for us to contact for wheel chair assistance? Is there a separate security process?

You contact her airline to request wheelchair service. They will take you to the head of security.

I am traveling with pets (1 in the cabin and 2 in the hold), 3 large bags and a carry-on. I can't push two luggage carts so how do I hire assistance to help me get to the rental car agency?

There is no such person to hire. You'll have to fit everything onto one cart.

I am booking my son on a flight from Denver to Raleigh, connecting through Dulles. How difficult is it to navigate? Flying United with a 1 hr 22 min layover in between flights. Will he have trouble getting from one gate to another?

Hi I am travelling drom Dublin to Charlotte with a 1 hour 35 minute layover in IAD. I have a small child and I'm worried I won't make the flight. Can you tell me if this is doable? Both flights are booked with Aerlingus.

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Dublin. All you have to do in Dulles is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

If I'm flying from Las Vegas to IAD to then get a flight to Dublin, is 90 minutes enough time for the connection? Will I have to recheck baggage if the flights were bought as one ticket?

Yes, that is plenty of time. You won't have to do anything with your bags. There is no US Customs when exiting the US.

I will be arriving on a Sunday at 15:15 on Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow and have a departure to Atlanta on Delta at 5:35. I will have global entry, TSA Pre-check. Carry-on only. Is this enough time?

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

Sorry that should be 15:50 and 18:35 (3:50 and 5:35). still enough time?

Ah, that's considerably harder, but with no checked bags, GE and Precheck, you should still have enough time.

I am not familiar with Dulles (terminals, international arrivals, mobile lounge). Would you be willing to give me a run down of the process arriving international and then making my domestic flight. The flight is not a connection as they would only allow me to connect on the 7pm not the 5:35.

When you arrive, you will be taken by a mobile lounge (a big bus) to the International Arrivals Building (which is just a modern Annex of the main terminal) where you will go through US Immigration and customs, then you will go to the security checkpoint, through security and to the Aerotrain to your departure gate in concourse B.

  • From SCE to Iad

Hi, In two weeks, we will be landing at Dulles from SCE to catch a connecting flight for ORL. We have 1 hour and 5 minutes to make the connection. We also will be traveling with a 5 and 7 year old. Is this enough time

Yes, that should be enough time if the first flight is on-time. There's a good chance you will arrive in concourse A and depart from concourse C or D. A is connected to C and D by the aerotrain and mobile lounge.

Hey Im flying from Tokyo to Charlotte with a 2 hour Lay over in IAD, both flights are United, I was wondering if I will have to recheck my bags in IAD and clear customs again. If so will 2 hours be enough time to do all of this? Thank you for any help!

In IAD you will arrive, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time.

Hi, im routing via IAD from Miami on american with an onward flight on british airways (one wirld partner) to london. Will i need to come landside and be re-screened for security assuming i can get all boarding passes issued at MIA? I only have about 1.5hours and want to avoid a panic Many thanks

Assuming your bags are checked through and you have both boarding passes all you have to do at IAD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.
