Wellington WLG Airport Overview


Wellington International Airport WLG, which calls itself the 'Wild at Heart Airport', is located in Rongotai, at the southern tip on the North Island, 7 km southeast of central Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, and accessible from the city by State Highway 1 via the Mount Victoria Tunnel. Even though the Airport has only one medium-sized runway, and caters mainly to domestic & Australian air traffic, it accounts for approximately 5 million passengers a year. At present Wellington International is served domestically by Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Pacific Bue & smaller airlines, and internationally by Air New Zealand , Qantas & Pacific Blue, offering direct and connecting flights to all points of the globe.

The passenger terminal of Wellington International has a ground, first and second level. (a) On the ground level outside are two taxi stands (one for Wellington Combined Taxis, & one for all other taxis). Across from the circle road are buses and rental cars.  Inside is an elevator down to the carpark, a baggage claim and international arrivals, renl car desks for 5 rental agencies (Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz & Thrifty), police & WIAL operations, and a concourse leading to regional airline gates.
(b) On the first level outside is the passenger drop-off area and carpark access; inside is check-in, ticketing desks, shops, cafe, restaurant, and access to the domestic international departure gates.
On the second level, reached by stairs & elevators is the conference center, the 'Wild At Heart Lounge' and the Koru Lounge.
Other services and amenities in the passenger terminal include volunteer ambassadors to help you find your way around the airport, a Terminal Services Team, luggage store, foreign currency exchange, parenting room, first aid, and lost & found. 
The Kia'ora conference center, located on the mezzanine floor, offers 7 conference rooms, accommodating between 4 and 120 attendees, with added services as requested (tel. +64 4 385 5199/ fax 5190).

Parking options at Wellington International: 
1. The Premium parking offers covered parking closest to the terminal with added security.
2. The Terminal parking lot is adjacent to the passenger teminal and has 2 entries, one to the north and one to the south.
3. The Heart parking lot is at the southern end of the passenger terminal and its entry is past the Terminal & Premium carparks.
4. The Long-Term parking lot's entry is via Flight Drive at the southern end of he Airport, open 24/7 with free shuttle service.

To get from the Airport to your destination, you can rent a car, take a taxi, a shuttle or a bus:
(a) Taxis to the Railway Station average $30; to Seatoun $16, to Taw $5 & to Upper Hutt $90.
(b) Door-to-door shuttles are located outside of Arrivals: Note that you need to state if you are traveling in a group to be charged the 'additional passenger' rate. One single passenger fare to the Terrace averages $15, with $5 for each add'l passenger; and for Upper Hutt $49, plus $5 for each add'l passenger.  
(c) The Aiport Flyer is an express bus serving the Hutt Valley, via city center, on to Queensgate & Lower & Upper Hutt. The bus runs daily every 15 mins up to Lower Hutt, and from there every hour to Upper Hutt, at current fare of $8 to the City.
