Airport Overview
Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport is a public airport. It was renamed in 2003 after NASA astronaut and Amarillo native Rick Husband, who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in February of that year.
AMA airport is located six miles (10 km) east of downtown Amarillo, in Potter and Randall Counties, Texas, United States. AMA is owned by the City of Amarillo.

Airport Traveling Tips
- Travelers are advised to arrive at least 2 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure.
- Passengers are recommended to not wrap gifts, as security officers may have to search contents of packages.
- Make sure to pack the luggage according to the guidelines and do not forget to carry a photo ID.
- Be prepared to remove footwear for X-ray screening and place shoes in plastic bins with the rest of your carry-on items.

Passenger Pickup and Drop-off
- Passengers can be dropped off at the curb in front of the terminal. Because of TSA security requirements, no waiting is allowed at the front of the terminal building.
- While picking up passengers, AMA Airport offers two options - The cell phone lot, located adjacent to Rosenwald Drive at the Airport’s entrance. Visitors wait in their vehicle for their passengers to notify them via cell phone that they are ready to be picked up in front of the terminal building. It is free to park in the cell phone waiting lot. The second option is the Preferred Parking Lot where the first thirty minutes are free.

The terminal building underwent a $52.2 million renovation that was designed by the firms Reynolds, Smith & Hills, and Shiver Megert and Associates and completed in 2011.

Amarillo Airport: A Brief History Timeline
- On 29 May 1929, the City of Amarillo opened a municipal airport, referred to as Old Muny or Old Municipal Airport.
- In 1931, Amarillo was a stop on coast-to-coast service between Los Angeles and New York City.
- In 1952 the airport name changed to Amarillo Air Terminal.
- In 1960, TWA was operating all of its flights into Amarillo with Lockheed Constellation propliners.
- In 1964, the first scheduled jet service into Amarillo was flown by Trans World Airlines.
- 1968, Braniff International had introduced jet service into the airport with Boeing 727-100 and British Aircraft Corporation BAC One-Eleven jets.
- During the mid-1970s the airport was used for jet training by (then) West German national airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG.
- By 1976, the airport had also become a Port of entry, becoming Amarillo International Airport.
- In 2003 the airport terminal building was rededicated to NASA astronaut Rick Husband, the commander of mission STS-107 of the Space Shuttle Columbia and an Amarillo native.
