Dallas Love Field is a city-owned public airport in Dallas, Texas, U.S. It is owned by the City of Dallas and operated by the Dallas Department of Aviation.

DAL airport is located 6 miles (10 km) northwest of downtown Dallas, Texas. It covers an area of 1,300 acres (530 ha).

  • DAL was Dallas’ main airport until 1974 when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) opened.
  • In 2019, Dallas Love Field was awarded ASQ Award - 1st Place by ACI World.
  • More than 16 million passengers traveled through DAL in the year 2019.

Airport Traveling Tips

  • Travelers are recommended to arrive at least 2 hours before the scheduled flight departure.
  • Passengers should make sure to carry their photo identification, passport, boarding pass and pack carry-on luggage in an appropriate manner to avoid any hassles.
  • Passengers should also be prepared to remove electronics larger than a cell phone from their baggage and isolate those items in bins for screening.

Passenger Pickup and Drop-off

  • All passengers are to be dropped-off on the upper level of transportation.
  • The pick-ups are also to be done on the upper level.
  • If visitors have to wait for passengers, they can use the Cell Phone Waiting Lot located on the NE Corner of Hawes & Herb Kelleher. Just make sure no vehicle is left unattended.

  • For arriving flights: Arrival flight status provides the arrival times, gate information, delays, and time to land for the Dallas Love Field Airport.

Airport Terminals

In 2009, modernization of Love Field's terminals was announced. The $519 million master plan replaced the existing terminal buildings with a single new 20-gate concourse.

Parking Garages A, B and C are located adjacent to the Love Field terminal. Entrances to Garages A & B are on the lower level of the roadway. To access Garage C, turn right at the Aviation Place stoplight and proceed south. All spaces are first-come, first-served.

Ground Transport

Passengers have a variety of options for ground transport after arriving at Dallas Love Field.

Rental Cars

Various rental car companies operate at Dallas Love Field. Each has a counter in the hallway leading to baggage claim.

Taxis and Limos

Taxis are located on the transportation lower level, directly across from the terminal ramp. Passengers must cross the street toward Parking Garage A to reach the taxi stand. For limousine service at the airport, passengers must rearrange. Limo service is provided on the lower level downstairs from the Baggage Claim.


All buses, including intercity buses and charter services, pick up along the curb behind the ticketing wing. This area is accessed by following the signs to Garage C.

Dallas Airport: A Brief History Timeline

  • Dallas Love Field has its origins in 1917.
  • On October 19, 1917, the airport was officially opened.
  • In 1927, Dallas purchased Love Field, which opened for civilian use.
  • On April 9, 1932, the first paved runways at the airfield were completed.
  • On October 6, 1940, Love Field's Lemmon Avenue Terminal Building opened on the east side of the airfield.
  • On January 20, 1958, Dallas’ Airport new terminal opened to the airlines.
  • By 2003, Southwest and Continental Express were the only two major commercial airlines operating out of Love Field.
  • In 2002, Love Field was designated as a Texas State Historical Site in 2003.
  • On December 8, 2014, city officials announced a plan to add 4,000 parking spaces at Love Field, including the proposed construction of a 5-level parking garage across from Ticket Hall.

Pets traveling with travelers should remain in crates, with the exception of service animals. An animal relief area is located post-security in the stem and two relief areas are directly outside the terminal. One is large enough for animals to run.
Wheelchairs and transport carts are available throughout the terminal. Customers have the option of requesting assistance from check-in to boarding. All restrooms are handicap accessible and handicap parking is located in both parking garages.
