Security at Birmingham-UK BHX Airport

Tight security controls remain in place and sufficient time should be allowed after arrival at the airport to complete the security check. The purpose of the security process is to safeguard passengers and this important function can take time to complete.  If your airline advises that you should be at a boarding gate at a specific time, please ensure that you allow for any unforeseen delays at the security checkpoint. To help make things flow as smoothly as possible, please try to be ready before reaching the checkpoint: Have your travel documents ready for inspection. Comply with your airline's restrictions on the amount of cabin baggage that you may carry (see below). Present transparent plastic bags containing liquids to security personnel separately from hand luggage (see below) - be prepared for items contained in this bag to undergo an additional testing process. Remove jackets and/or coats. These will be screened separately through the X-ray scanner. Remove laptop computers and other large electrical devices from your hand luggage. These will be screened separately through the X-ray scanner. Be prepared to remove your shoes if instructed to do so. Liquid Restrictions You are only allowed to take small quantities of liquids in your hand luggage. These liquids must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres each. You must pack these containers in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than one litre (20cm by 20cm). Each passenger may only carry one such transparent bag.

Liquids include: water and other drinks, soups, syrups creams, lotions and oils perfumes sprays gels, including hair and shower gels contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants pastes, including toothpaste liquid-solid mixtures mascara any other item of similar consistency
You may still: Pack liquids in bags that you check in - the rules only affect hand baggage; Carry prescription medicines and food for special dietary requirements (including baby foods), for use during the trip. You must carry with you supporting documentation for prescription medication. You may be requested to taste the contents of each jar or bottle of baby food and/or special dietary foodstuffs. Buy liquids such as drinks and perfumes, either in an EU airport shop (when located beyond the point where you show your boarding pass), or on board an aircraft operated by an EU airline. If they are sold in a special sealed bag, do not open it before you are screened - otherwise the contents may have to be surrendered at the checkpoint. (If you transfer at an EU airport, do not open the bag before screening at your transfer airport).

Hand Baggage Size Guidelines Hand luggage - You can carry hand luggage through the airport security search point providing the dimensions of these items does not exceed a maximum length of 56cm, width of 45cm and depth of 25cm (including wheels, handles, side pockets etc). Please note that some airlines impose more restrictive dimensions than these, so you should check with your airline before travelling.

Musical instruments - large musical instruments that do not fit in to hand luggage will be allowed, however they will be screened separately. It should be remembered that this list serves only as an example of the type of item that is prohibited and is not exhaustive. It should also be noted that it is in addition to (and does not replace) the list of dangerous and illegal goods that are published by individual airlines.
