Benefits of TSA PreCheck

I’ve used TSA PreCheck for several years now, and here’s why I think it’s worth every penny:

• Expedited Screening: TSA PreCheck members, like myself, get access to a special security lane. I’ve often zipped through security in under 10 minutes, even during busy times.
• No Removal of Shoes, Belts, or Light Outerwear: One of the things I love most is that I don’t have to take off my shoes or belt. It might sound trivial, but when you’re rushing to catch a flight, the last thing you want is to juggle your belongings at the checkpoint.
• Keep Liquids and Laptops in Bags: Another huge perk is not having to pull out my laptop or liquids. When I’m traveling with a well-packed carry-on bag, this makes the entire process so much smoother.
• Shorter Wait Times: In my experience, the PreCheck lane has significantly shorter wait times than the regular lines. I can often breeze through, even when the airport is packed.

How to Enroll in TSA PreCheck

If you’re ready to make your airport experience more efficient, the enrollment process is fairly simple. Here’s what I did:

1. Determine Eligibility: U.S. citizens, nationals, and lawful permanent residents can apply. Non-U.S. citizens may be eligible through programs like Global Entry.
2. Complete the Online Application: The application process was straightforward for me. I went to the TSA PreCheck application website, filled out my personal information (name, birthdate, address), and was done in about 10 minutes.
3. Schedule an Appointment: After submitting my application, I scheduled an in-person appointment at a nearby TSA enrollment center. You can find these using the "Find an Enrollment Center" tool on the TSA PreCheck website.
4. Attend the Appointment: My appointment only took 10 minutes. I brought my driver’s license and was fingerprinted for a background check. Simple and quick.
5. Pay the Application Fee: It cost me $85 for a five-year membership. Personally, I find that fee very reasonable considering the time and stress I’ve saved over the years.
6. Await Approval: After a couple of weeks, I got an email notifying me that I’d been approved. They assigned me a Known Traveler Number (KTN), and now I use it every time I book a flight.
7. Enjoy Expedited Screening: Now, every time I book a flight, I make sure to add my KTN, and I breeze through security. It’s as simple as that!
