Age Limits of Flying with Infants & Kids

Infants must be seven days old for air travel (most airlines)

Some airlines require a doctor's written permission if the infant or baby is less than 14 days old, so you have to be sure to check your airline's policies. Further, he or she is allowed on board only in the case of emergency medical reasons or if the mother is traveling on compassionate grounds.

Tickets for the infants who are traveling on a bassinet or a parent's lap can fly free. When you are booking your tickets online, you can also request a bassinet in the Passenger Details section.

Children with 6‑36 months can apply for car seats

Lap children between the ages of 6 to 36 months can travel onboard in car seats. Further, if you prefer this option, you have to pay full fare for that particular seat for the baby, irrespective of the baby's age.

The car seats must be approved by the government, with labeling that indicates that it is approved for vehicles as well as aircraft. You can also use car seats at any stage of the flight, including take‑off and landing.

The car seat needs to be forward-facing. In addition, it must be the one that can be secured by the use of the lap seatbelt at the seat.

Note: If the car-seat in the flight is not sold out, the airline may allow you to use an empty seat for your lap child. However, there is no guarantee of the availability of the seat unless you purchased it.

Some airlines may also offer special discounts if you purchase a ticket for a child under the age of 2. While these discounts are rare, it is worth exploring the potential by contacting the airlines directly.

Children with 2‑14 years of age

You have to buy a full ticket for children traveling in a separate seat between the ages of 2-14 years. In some of the cases, you may also discount the full adult fare.
