Flight Cancellation Fees by Airline

Airline cancellation fees vary according to airlines. For some airlines, you will get full refunds, while some allow you to rebook the flight within a limited period of time.

Some airlines that do not offer full refunds may give you a credit in the amount that you can use to rebook the flight within a year. But, in most cases the situation varies depending upon the ticket type, the reason for cancellation, and the carrier.

To help you with airline cancelation fees, we’ve summarized the cancellation policies of all major airlines.

NOTE: If you are a US traveler and purchase any flight ticket within 24 hours that you want to cancel, then you are obligated to receive a 100% refund of the ticket booking.


 American Airlines Cancellation Fees

American Airlines is the largest Airline in the world which serves more than 50 countries. AA enables passengers to get their flight cancellation refund depending on the situation and upon the type of ticket you have purchased. You can cancel your ticket or reservation online, over the phone, or in-person prior to departure of the flight. If you are eligible for a refund, you will get your money back in seven to twenty business days.

Passengers who purchased non-refundable tickets may not get a refund but may be eligible for rebooking with another American Airlines flight. In such a case, you have to pay cancellation charges that are decided by American Airlines. Check here for more info on American’s cancellation policy.

 Delta Airlines Cancellation Fees

You can get a refund from Delta Airlines for the ticket charges if you cancel the ticket within 24 hours of booking. Also, if the flight gets diverted, delayed, or canceled, then you may be eligible for a full refund.

However, if you purchased a non-refundable ticket and it has been longer than 24 hours since purchase, you will not get a full refund. In this case, you have to pay ticket cancellation fees that depend upon your ticket type. Plus, you will also need to pay the difference in the cost of the flight.

Once the ticket gets canceled, Delta Airlines will issue you a travel credit that will be valid for one year. Passengers can cancel the airline tickets via online, in person, or by phone. See Delta’s policies regarding cancellations.

 United Airlines Cancellation Fees

United Airlines cancellation can be as easy as making a reservation. The cancellation fees depend upon the type of ticket you purchased. If you cancel your United Airlines ticket within 24 hours of the booking, then there will be no cancellation fees charged.

To cancel non-refundable tickets, you have to pay the cancellation fee according to United Airlines cancellation policies. It is also possible that you may not receive any refund and, in addition, have to pay cancellation fees as well.

 JetBlue Cancellation Fees

The JetBlue cancellation fees do not apply if you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking it. Also, if you have purchased Blue Basic Fare Class, then you will not get any refund on the cancellation of a JetBlue flight. In addition, you will need to pay a cancellation fee on canceling the Blue Basic Fare Class ticket if you want to reuse you ticket in the future.

If you purchased a Basic Economy fare ticket, then you will need to pay the full amount of the cancellation fee. For non-refundable ticket cancellations, the Airline may charge you a $100 cancellation fee, which will allow you to rebook the ticket at a future date, depending on the new cost of the flight. Southwest Airlines Cancellation Fees

Southwest offers the most flexible ticket cancellation and change policies among major airlines. If you purchased a refundable ticket, you could cancel it anytime, and Southwest Airlines will not charge any fees to you.

Further, if you cancel any type of air tickets within 24 hours of booking, then you will get a full refund. But, if you purchase the non-refundable ticket and cancel it after 24 hours of booking, you will not get a refund but will receive credit to rebook the flight within a year. Note: The refund for airline cancellation does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. However, the agents can apply for refund.
