After a successful career in technology, Maura decided to make a significant career change and became a Registered Nurse. Her dedication to helping others took her to the mountains of Guatemala, where she provided healthcare in remote villages. She found the experience immensely rewarding, reinforcing her commitment to making a difference through her work and travels.
Maura's travel resume is impressive, having visited over 40 countries and traveled to, through, or between more than 150 airports. Her adventures have taken her to some of the most unique and remote corners of the globe, enriching her understanding of diverse cultures and environments.
Since 2006, Maura has been an invaluable contributor to the iFly website, sharing her extensive travel knowledge and experiences with a wide audience, with particular contributions in the realm of traveling with kids/children. Maura's three children, who are dual-citizens, have been an integral part of her travels. Maura's early career was spent in San Francisco, working for Silicon Valley tech businesses. This career involved significant business travel, with frequent airports, taxis, and hotels around the world. During these trips, Maura observed backpackers with flexible schedules, inspiring her to leave her corporate job in 1998 and embark on a journey of her own.
One of Maura's favorite trips was spending three months traveling by overland truck in East Africa, visiting several countries including Kenya, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. During this trip, she had several memorable experiences, such as nearly drowning after being dumped out of a raft in the Zambezi River and spending a sleepless night in a tent in the Serengeti with hyenas fighting over a bar of soap someone left outside. Despite these near-death encounters, she had plenty of other magical experiences to cherish.
When she's not exploring new destinations, Maura enjoys spending time at home, delving into hobbies that keep her grounded and inspired. Her love for geography and culture continues to influence her personal and professional life, making her a well-rounded and relatable travel expert.
