International Travelers at Houston Intercontinental IAH Airport

IAH airport is the nation’s 9th largest international passenger gateway. In 2001, more than five (5) million international passengers passed through its gates.

International travelers are serviced by the Mickey Leland International Airlines Building (Terminal D), which opened in May 1990. Airlines which fly out of Leland Terminal D are Aerolitoral, Aeromexico, Air Canada (Terminal A), Air France, Air Jamaica, Aviacsa, British Airways, Cayman Airways, Continental, KLM, Lufthansa and TACA.

Arriving international travelers must first clear the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, where uniformed, multilingual Special Service Representatives (SSRs) are available to assist passengers.

Passports, Visas (if required) and other necessary documents must be completed correctly and available for the Immigration inspector.

After claiming bags, passengers enter the U.S. Customs and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) checkpoint. A Customs declaration form, which is distributed on the plane, should be ready for inspection by the Customs officer. There is a USDA inspector available to examine food, plants or other perishables for travelers carrying these items. Passengers who have duty to pay may do so at the cashier window adjacent to the exit doors of the Customs area.

Once passengers and their baggage complete the inspection process, they will continue in one of several directions.

SSRs staffing the visitor information booth immediately outside the U.S. Customs exit can provide airport and tourist information.

In Transit Lounge
The in-transit lounge in D provides comfortable accommodations for passengers awaiting continuation of international flights. The lounge has a seating capacity for 200 persons and offers these transiting passengers beverage and food service, duty free shopping, and the opportunity to relax prior to their flight’s continuation.

Houston Intercontinental IAH Comments

  • Security

My Husband just arrived from Houston and was returning with Christmas presents for the family. He put 3 small snow globes in his hand luggage and the security attendant was very rude and took them off my husband upsetting the family. He could clearly see what they were and they were so small. Who can I contact to see if these can be shipped to an address in Houston for our collection later. Thank you.

  • Flight connection times

My friend has a flight from SMF to LHR with only a 53 minute connecting window. He needs wheelchair assistance. Will this be enough time for him to make his LHR connection?
