Medellin Jose Maria Cordova MDE Airport Overview

Medellin J. M. Cordova International Airport MDE is Colombia's second-largest Airport after Eldorado International in Bogota. It is situated within the department of Antioquia and serves greater Medellin and  the Valle de Aburra, and it is now Medellin's international airport, while the old Olaya Herrera Airport serves mainly domestic flights.  Jose Maria Cordova Airport is one  of seven central-north Colombian airports operated by 'Airplan' .

The Airport is located at an elevation of 2,120 meters, near Rionegro, at Carrera (motorway) 70, and is 30 km (or a 30-minute drive via the new Las Palmas Expressway) from the city of Medellin.

With a long runway and an estimamed 2.2 million passengers a year, Jose Maria Cordova Airport is served by a number of major airlines offering direct and connecting flights to all points of the globe. (American Airlines presently has daily flights from/to Miami).

The Departure Tax for international flights is US $28 and for domestic flights US $5, payable in cash (pesos or dollars).

To get from Jose Maria Cordova Airport to your destination you can rent a car, take a taxi or a bus. You can catch a mini-bus which will drop you off at the corner of Carrera 50A and Calle 53 at a fare of about US $2--service is frequent and takes about 45 minutes.
It is strongly advisable to use taxis licensed by the Airport, and even though in recent years the area has made tremendous strife in terms of security, travelers who do not speak Spanish should use common-sense caution.

Ongoing Airport Developments: Since 2010 José María Córdova Airport has continuously upgraded and expanded its facilities, and upgrade work continues into 2013.
