RFD Airport Overview
Chicago-Rockford International Airport RFD is located at the outskirts of the city of Rockford, in the very northern part of Illinois, close to the Wisconsin border, and close to Interstate Hwy I-39, with access to I-90. As the Airport is only 84 miles from Chicago, it can offer a welcome alternative to major airport hassles. RFD Airport focuses on providing travelers with vacation charters to popular non-stop seasonal destination, but has also scheduled non-stop service available. Presently, destinations include Branson, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Cancun & a number of Florida cities. Ticket counter hours are 8am-4pm, and Allegiant's ticket counter is open one hour after each flight departure.
The two-level passenger terminal with ticketing and baggage claim and an airport cafe on the lower level, and security, departures and a restaurant on the upper level. All parking at the airport is free. Three rental car agencies do business at the Airport.
To get to the City, you can take a taxi or use public transportation. The bus stop is directly in front of the terminal, at the east end of the service drive. Take the South Main Bus 7 to the RMTD Transfer Center on West State Street, then switch to the East State Bus 11 and get off at the Greyhound/Clock Tower stop (available only Mon-Sat).
RFD is also home to the second-largest air hub sorting facility in United Parcel Service's system. DHL and BAX Global have smaller facilities at RFD. Right on-Airport premises is the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a world leader in aviation and aerospace education.
