Jacksonville JAX Airport Overview

Jacksonville International Airport JAX, which was just quoted by the New York Times Magazine as 'one of the cheapest airports to fly out of in the country', is not only gateway to the City of Jacksonville, but also to Florida's sandy beaches, and offers passengers great service, art exhibits and live music, rocking chairs & free WiFi. The Airport is manages by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority ('JAA').

Jacksonville Airport is located 18 miles north of downtown Jacksonville, Florida, is situated in close proximity to Interstates I-95 and I-295/ Florida 9A, and is the gateway to northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.

With two runways and an estimated 5.6 million passengers a year, Jacksonville Airport is served presently by American, AirTran, Delta, Continental, JetBlue, Southwest, United & US Airways, offering non-stop flights to major US Cities, with connections around the world. JetBlue has started May 2011a new route to Puerto Rico.

On-Airport hotels:  (a) The Clarion Hotel Airport Conference Center (tel. 904-741-1997) on 2101 Dixie Clipper Rd., and
(b) the Microtel Inn and Suites (tel: 904-741-4911) on 13200 International Airport Blvd.

To get from Jacksonville Airport to your destination, you can rent a car, take a taxi, a shuttle bus or the public bus. All ground transportation services - including rental car agencies, taxi and limousine services - are located on the lower level of the passenger terminal, adjacent to baggage claim.

    Some area residents think that Jacksonville Airport is nice alternative to the more hectic Orlando Airport. One traveler suggests the courtesy waiting lot for passenger pickup with directions to it; another points out the USO lounge, and another points to the rental car return.

    THe bus is clean and the drivers are friendly. Considering the time it takes to get a rental car or finally get a cab, the city bus for $1.00 to the hotels downtown is the best way to go. JAX best offer for travelers on budget.

    Tips for passenger pickup at JAX: Use the free Courtesy Waiting Lot, which is next to the JAA Administration Building, a mere 2-minute drive to the arrivals curb in front of the terminal. To get there make a left onto Pecan Park Road, and again a lft into the Waiting Lot which shows current flight information. Stay in the lot until you get a call from your arriving passenger.

    Prepaid phone cards are sold at the River City Travel Mart in JAX's terminal, and you can rent a celular phone at the Business Center.

    Jacksonville International's main passenger terminal consists of a level 1 - the baggage claim, level 2 - ticketing, and a Mezzanin. Level 2 leads to Concourses A and C and their departure gates (a new Concourse B is to open in 2013).
