  • Will I make it?
    Aug 9, 2016
I received 2 $100 vouchers on United for some flight problems. I am flying from PVD airport to Chicago O hare from 9:30 to 11AM for free with my voucher. From there I will have to go to baggage claim, pick up my bags and check in for my flight to Beijing at 12:50. I have an hour and 50 minutes to exit the plane, get my bags, check in my bags, run through tsa, run to the terminal for my flight. Will I make it?

That's just enough time if everything goes perfectly. If both flights are on United then you can show both reservations to the agent in Providence and you should be able to get your bags checked through to Beijing.

Yeah I was not sure if that was possible to have my bags checked in Providence to Beijing. That would save me a ton of time! Thank you so much

  • Chicago-Narita only in 2 hr transfer time
    Aug 7, 2016
Hi everyone! I am an Indonesian exchange student flying from Madison Wisconsin to Chicago Ohare in August 14. Then from Chicago i will fly to narita and finally fly to jakarta, indonesia. All of my planes are American Airlines and booked in the same reservation (not separated). My only problem is i will arrive in Chicago at 11 and the plane to narita departs at 13.00 (1pm) - so only 2 hours of transfer time. Is that still enough time for me, since I believe i have to go to the immigration to stamp my passport again? I will have two big luggage and a carry on bag - and it would be disastrous if I have to take my luggage first from my Madison-O'Hare flight and recheck it again for my ohare-narita flight. Also, will I get new ticket if I missed the flight because of the very short transfer time? And how much it would probably cost? Thank you for the response

just to add a detail, my flight would be: AA3587 (MSN-ORD) AA 153 (ORD-NRT)

Yes, that is plenty of time. You do not have to go anywhere for them to stamp your passport. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3. You have plenty of time.

  • Help with what to expect
    Aug 2, 2016
Have not flown since the mobile check in e ticket creation. Very confused by it. Does this mean we don't print a ticket at home? Have to use smart phone to check in and then somehow a code is going to be the boarding pass? What happens with connecting flight? Is there another check in process with another code? I am so confused and I'm sure I sound like an idiot. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Trying to explain this to son who is flying alone (for first time) to Nicaragua on American. Then we don't understand how to do the mobile check in for return tickets to get him out of Nicaragua. It seems to me it was easier with a printed ticket. Guess I am showing my age. Thanks for any help or words of wisdom.

You can print your boarding pass at home. You don't have to use a mobile boarding pass. In Nicaragua you will just check in at the airport as you normally would. All you need to bring to the airport is your passport.

    Thank you!

  • Iceland to Seattle; separate ticket to SJC
    Jul 29, 2016
Flying on Icelandair to Seattle and need to book separate flight on Alaska Air to SJC. How long do we need to clear customs, gather bags, check in (inc. luggage)? Available flights are 2.15 hours or 4.15 hours after arrival - would prefer earlier flight if doable. Advice?

I don't think the 2:15 connection is reasonable. You'll have to go with the 4:15

  • Flying from Cancun with layover in Charlotte - destination Chicago
    Jul 21, 2016
We are flying from Cancun on AA895 arriving at 4:41 PM and have connecting flight to Chicago AA1908 at 5:55 PM . Do we have enough time ? I guess we have to clear customs, pick up bags and re-check so it seems to me like close call

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. 90 minutes is the minimum allowed to do that. This is well below that.

Thank you , and hearing that I wonder why airline is allowing that option ? I guess to avoid it we have to do carry on only. What are your thoughts ?

I don't know - it seems that since the merger, AA has been offering a lot of impossible connections through former US Airways hubs, I think they forgot to program in the minimum connection times for those hubs into their system. Going without checked bags will help, but it's still a risky connection.

  • Time between flights?
    Jul 8, 2016
I will be arriving in MIA from Barranquilla, Colombia, and then connecting on a domestic flight. How much time should I allow between flights on the same airline (American)?

I would want at least 2 hours, preferably closer to 3.

    Thank you!

  • layover time
    Jun 28, 2016
I am flying into Houston Intercontinental airport and I have a 1 hour layover for my flight to Cancun, Mexico. Will that be enough time to make it to my gate?

Where are you flying into Houston from? Are both tickets on the same reservation?

Flying from Kansas City into Houston and yes both tickets are on the same reservation.

Yes, that is enough time. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive in Terminal B you can take the Skyway train to Terminal E inside security.

Any tips for flying alone for the first time

  • Which city is better to layover?
    Jun 17, 2016
Is it better to go southwest & layover in MDW, go American Layover in MCO, or go a United Layover in Dulles?

Where are you flying from and to?

From Charlotte to Seattle the layovers are in the morning (overnight flights) except southwest.

The MCO layover may be a bit tricky since American doesn't actually fly from Seattle to MCO - that flight is on Alaska. IAD is in general a very simple airport to do a layover in but isn't very nice (all United mainline flights are on the same concourse). MDW is nicer, but very crowded and delay prone.

  • How do I make a connecting flight from Domestic to International?
    Jun 15, 2016
I am flying into MIA from MCO and will arrive in Miami at 11;30 AM using American Airlines, then my next flight is MIA to BOGota Colombia at 2pm on LATAM Air. I know they are both part of OneWorld, BUT do I still have to get my bag from Baggage Claim, go ALL the way to the front of the airport and re-check in my bag and go through security all over again? This is my first international flight, and I am really confused as to how to go about the connecting flight without screwing anything up.

If everything is on the same reservation then you just have to go to the LATAM gates which I believe are in J on the south terminal, go through security and to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time. You shouldn't have to do anything with your bag.

  • we will fly United Airline from EWR 11:50am Friday flight 89 How long
    Jun 10, 2016
how long is the TSA wait time for terminal C. Thnx

Usually security wait times mid-morning aren't too bad, but I'd still plan on arriving at around 9:30.

hi, I will fly united 089 to beijing on Monday. Is tsa wait time bad on Monday. Thank you

  • Transfer times
    Jun 8, 2016
I am flying from US to Amsterdam then to Hamburg. Is an hour and 50 minutes enough transfer time? Will have checked baggage - all delta flights.

Yes, that should be enough time. In Amsterdam you just have to go through passport control and to your departure gate. Note that your flight to Hamburg will be operated by KLM.

  • Connecting Flight
    Jun 6, 2016
I am thinking about booking a Jetblue flight from CHS to JFK that lands at 11:39 AM. I am not checking any bags and need to make it to a Korean Air flight by 2 PM for Thailand. Will I have enough time? Do I need to go through security again?

Yes, you will have to go through security again, but other than changing terminals that's it. You have enough time as long as the Jetblue flight is on-time.

  • Visit to the city
    May 25, 2016
We will have an 8 hour layover on our way from Chicago to Madrid. We are planning to go into the city. How much is a taxi from Newark airport to Times Square and how long would it take? Is a taxi our fastest option?

It would take over an hour and cost $60 each way. I don't recommend it. For the limited amount of time you will be there, it's honestly not worth it.

That's a bummer as we purposely planned the extended layover so we could spend the day in the city. Now we will spend 8+ hours in the airport! Guess I should've checked into it before I made the plane reservations 😩
