Airport Overview

Adelaide International Airport, is the principal airport of Adelaide, South Australia. It has been operated privately by Adelaide Airport Limited under a long-term lease from the Commonwealth Government since 29 May 1998.

Located adjacent to West Beach, ADL Airport is approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) west of the city centre.

Airport Traveling Tips

  • Passengers are advised to arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight departure, and 3 hours before an international flight departure.

  • The Adelaide Airport Pick-up and Drop-off zone are conveniently located towards the entry point of the airport, on Sir Richard Williams Avenue.
  • Vehicles are not permitted to stop at the kerbside except for immediate passenger pick-up and drop-off.

Airport Terminals

The new terminal building at Adelaide Airport was opened on 7 October 2005 by the Prime Minister John Howard and South Australian Premier Mike Rann. However, Adelaide Airport Limited announced soon afterwards that only international flights would use the new facility immediately due to problems with the fuel pumps and underground pipes.

Airport Parking

Terminal Car Park

The terminal car park at Adelaide Airport is only a few minutes walk to check-in and baggage collection. It caters for 1650 vehicles on levels 1 – 4.

Long-Term Car Park

The long term parking is only a short distance from the terminal and offers great value for longer stays. Occasionally, on Fridays, weekends and other periods of high demand, the long term car park may be full.

Ground Transport

Passengers can choose among a variety of options for ground transportation after arriving at the airport. The various options include buses, rentals, airport shuttles, etc. In addition to this, many passengers also opt for ride services such as Uber, Taxis, and Lyft.

Car Rentals

Adelaide Airport offers six car rental companies that are all under one roof, located on the ground floor of the terminal adjacent to the baggage claim area. Parking for car rentals is located on the ground floor of the multi-level car park. The top car rental providers at ADL include Hertz, Thrifty, Europcar, Budget, Enterprise and more.

Taxis

To exit the airport, there is a designated taxi rank located to the left (western side) of the pedestrian plaza as you walk out of the terminal. There is a $3 levy added to all fares for taxis leaving the airport.

Buses & Trains

If you want to use public transport to/from Adelaide Airport, Adelaide Metro offers a convenient JetBus service to Glenelg, West Beach and the City, servicing all stops en route.

Adelaide Airport: A Brief History Timeline

  • An early "Adelaide airport" was an aerodrome constructed in 1921 on 24 ha of land in Albert Park.
  • In 1954, an alternative site at Port Adelaide, including a seaplane facility, was considered inferior and too far from the central business district construction began and flights commenced.
  • In May 1998, Adelaide Airport Limited purchased the long-term leases of Adelaide Airport and Parafield Airport from the Commonwealth of Australia.
  • In 2005, a dual-use $260 million facility replaced both the original 'temporary' domestic and international terminals.
  • On 5 August 2008, Tiger Airways Australia confirmed that Adelaide Airport would become the airline's second hub which would base two of the airline's Airbus A320s by early 2009.
  • In 2019, the state and federal government committed $2 million each towards a new preservation facility inside the airport's $165 million terminal expansion.

Q: Do I need to remove my shoes and jewelry while security checks at Adelaide Airport?

A: If an alarm is sounded by the metal detector, you will be asked by the screening officer to remove any metal objects and place them on the trays provided. You will then be asked to walk through the metal detector a second time.

Q: Can I smoke at Adelaide Airport?

A: Smoking inside the terminal is strictly prohibited. To accommodate smokers, Adelaide Airport has provided dedicated smoking areas on Level 2 outside the terminal on both the right and left hand side of the building. Also, there is a smoking area located on the ground level at the southern end of the terminal.

Q: Does ADL Airport have a medical facility?

A: If you are injured or become ill while at Adelaide Airport, there are first aid facilities and trained staff available within the terminal to assist. South Australian Ambulance services are located less than 1km from the terminal.
