Bilbao Airport BIO serves the Viscaya Province, in the Basque Country of northern Spain. It has been named 'One of the 10 most beautiful airorts in the world', according to USA Today.
BIO is located 12 km north of Bilbao, accessible from Bilbao's city center exit of Highway A8 and proceeding from there on the most direct route via Alameda Recalde. After La Salve bridge, on the left-hand side, enter one of the Artxanda tunnels and on exiting into the Corredor del Taxorrieri, which is the dual carriageway, the direction to the airport is clearly signposted.
With two runways and 4.6 million passengers in 2016, Bilbao Airport is served by a host of national & international, regular & low-cost airlines, offering flights to European cities and beyond. Seasonal charter flights are available to popular vacation destinations.
Bilboa Airport has one large passenger terminal; its sleek design shows two symmetrical wings and a sharp tip at its center. There is a dramatic viewing gallery raised above the baggage claim area, where visitors can gather to greet their arriving passengers and watch as they collect their baggage and leave the terminal. The Departures hall on level P2 can be accessed directly from the upper road.
The Ground Level: Arriving passengers at Bilbao Airport's terminal access an open-plan baggage reclaim lounge. Information offices, hotel reservation offices and other services are located around this area. The 7 baggage carousels are divided into Schengen/non-Schengen flights. After collecting their luggage, passengers then exit the building to a square covered by a 38-meter overhanging projection supporting the access road.
Level 3 houses 36 check-in desks arranged in the shape of a fan, and 23 airlines have their ticket counters there. Once check-in is completed, you enter the shopping & service area, followed by the security checks, and proceed onto the pre-boarding area.
Boarding gates on level 2 are gates 1 - 6, with gates 1R & 6R at opposite ends while gates 7 - 12 are on P0. From the pre-boarding area you can access either the mezzanine leading to the air bridges, or the remote boarding lounges on the ground level. The newly renovated VIP lounge is next the boarding gates, accessible to holders of loyalty programs or business tickets, as well as to paying passengers.Tel. 944 869 836

NOTE: The interactive Tourist Office in the Arrivals Area, appearing like a lighthouse, is of particular interest. It houses seven screens displaying images in high-definition, with life-size famous persons appearing on-screen - wellcoming visitors in various languages. Outside are two touch-sensitive screens providing useful information. Open Mon-Sun 9am-9pm.
