Wilmington Airport: A Brief History Timeline

  • Previously called Bluthethal Field on Memorial Day 1928, this airport has grown to be one of the country’s most efficient airports.
  • During World War II, it was used as the USA army’s third air force for using P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft.
  • It gained its current name in the 1950s and became an international airport in 1980.
