Airport Overview
Blue Grass Airport is a public airport in Fayette County, Kentucky. A short 6 miles west of downtown Lexington, it is located among world-renowned horse farms and situated directly across from Keeneland Race Course, Blue Grass Airport is the primary airport serving central and eastern Kentucky.
LEX airport is owned and operated by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Airport Board. It covers an area of 911 acres.

Airport Traveling Tips
- Passengers are recommended to arrive 90 minutes prior to their flight. This will provide ample time to park, check in with the airline and pass through the security checkpoint.
- In order to make traveling hassle-free, make sure to carry all the required documents such as passport, photo identification, etc.
- Please refer to the LEX Airport Map, before heading to the airport to board a flight.
Passenger Pickup and Drop-off
- Passengers can be picked up or dropped-off outside the terminal.
- However, vehicles are allowed curbside as long as they are actively loading or unloading. No parking or standing is permitted. Due to strict security guidelines, unattended vehicles will be towed.
- Also, the best place to meet arriving passengers is in the baggage claim area on the first floor of the terminal. Visitors can wait for free in the new Cell Phone Waiting Lot (located on the driver's right side upon entering the airport via the main terminal entrance) as well.

Airport Terminals
The Blue Grass Airport Terminal has three levels - Ground Level, Second Level, and Third Level, and three concourses - Concourse A, Concourse B, and Concourse C.
Concourse A
Concourse A has 4 gates - A1 to A4.
Concourse B
Concourse B has 8 gates - B1 to B8.
Concourse C
Concourse C has one gate - C1.

Airport Parking
Parking in all lots is subject to availability and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The acceptable forms of payments include Cash, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Ground Transport
Passengers can choose among a variety of options for ground transportation after arriving at the airport. The various options include buses, rentals, airport shuttles, etc. In addition to this, many passengers also opt for ride services such as Uber, Taxis, and Lyft.
Car Rentals
Rental car service counters are located in the baggage claim area on the first level of the terminal. It is covered so travelers are protected from inclement weather.
Taxis
Taxis are available outside the terminal by the baggage claim exit. Pricing is subject to change, and travelers are advised to contact the individual taxi company for additional information.
Buses
Public transport is an economical option to travel from LEX Airport. The Transit Authority of Lexington (LexTran) offers an express route from Blue Grass Airport to the downtown Transit Center on Vine Street. A designated pick-up location can be found curbside at Blue Grass Airport.

Blue Grass Airport: A Brief History Timeline
- In 1940, the city and county governments purchased 523 acres of farmland off Versailles Road to construct what would eventually become known as Blue Grass Field.
- On March 6, 1941, runway construction began and progressed quickly anticipating the U.S. entering World War II.
- On July 11, 1942, the first aircraft, an Army Air Corps B-25 bomber, officially landed at Blue Grass Field.
- In the 1950s, a new $28,000 control tower was put into operation at Blue Grass Field.
- Plans were made to extend two of three runways by 500 feet to accommodate turbo-prop jets.
- In 1970, the new 78-foot FAA control tower replaced the previous one located atop the terminal building.
- Between October 2002 and March 2003, the airport saw an increase of 23 percent, construction began on a new rental car ready-return center and safety area improvements on Runway 4-22.
- August 2010 saw the completion of the new 4,000-foot general aviation runway.
- The airport board completed its 2013 Master Plan Update, which launched the airport into a $60 million taxiway safety improvement program and the relocation of the Snow Removal Equipment Complex and public safety firehouse over the next decade.
