RDU Airport (RDU) has two main terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which are connected by a walkway. Both terminals are modern and spacious, with plenty of amenities to keep travelers comfortable and entertained during their time at the airport.

Overview of Terminals at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Terminal 1 at RDU serves Southwest Airlines and its subsidiary AirTran Airways. It has 19 gates and offers a variety of dining options, including fast food chains, cafes, and bars. The terminal also has a number of shops selling souvenirs, books, and travel essentials.

Terminal 2 at RDU serves all other airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and JetBlue Airways. It has 36 gates and features a wider selection of dining and shopping options, including sit-down restaurants, duty-free shops, and specialty stores.

Getting Between Terminals at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Travelers can easily walk between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at RDU via a covered walkway that connects the two buildings. The walkway is located on the upper level of each terminal, near the security checkpoints. There is also a shuttle bus that runs between the terminals for passengers with mobility issues or large amounts of luggage.

When it comes to food and shopping, the airport (RDU) has plenty of options to keep travelers satisfied. Terminal 1 is home to a variety of restaurants and cafes, including local favorites like Carolina Ale House and Mezza Luna. In addition to food, RDU also has a great selection of shops and amenities. Terminal 1 has a few souvenir shops, as well as a newsstand and a duty-free store for international travelers. Terminal 2 has a wider variety of shops, including a Brooks Brothers, a Brighton Collectibles, and a Tech on the Go for all your electronics needs. There are also plenty of amenities available, such as charging stations, free Wi-Fi, and even a meditation room for those in need of a little peace and quiet.

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

Raleigh-Durham Airport has security checkpoints located in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 has two security checkpoints, one located near the entrance and another located near the gates. Terminal 2 has three security checkpoints, one located near the entrance and two located near the gates. It is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight to allow enough time to go through security.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

Raleigh-Durham Airport offers a Fast Track program for passengers who want to expedite their security screening process. The Fast Track program is available at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Passengers who are enrolled in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry can use the Fast Track lanes, which are located at each security checkpoint. In addition, some airlines offer their own Fast Track programs for their premium passengers.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

Passport and immigration control at RDU Airport is located in Terminal 2. All international arrivals must go through passport and immigration control before exiting the airport. The passport and immigration control area is located near baggage claim and is clearly marked with signs. Passengers should have their passport and customs declaration form ready for inspection. Global Entry members can use the Global Entry kiosks to expedite their entry process.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

The airport has several TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints located throughout the terminals. These checkpoints allow travelers to go through security screening in a more efficient and expedited manner. TSA Pre Check is a program that allows eligible travelers to enjoy a faster and more convenient screening experience. To be eligible for TSA Pre Check, travelers must apply and pass a background check. Once approved, travelers can use dedicated TSA Pre Check lanes and do not need to remove shoes, belts, or light jackets, or take out their laptops and liquids from their carry-on bags.

Global Entry Locations

RDU has a Global Entry Enrollment Center located on the arrivals level of Terminal 2. Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States. To be eligible for Global Entry, travelers must apply and pass a background check. Once approved, travelers can use automated kiosks to complete their customs declaration and biometric scanning, which can save time and hassle upon arrival. The Global Entry Enrollment Center at Raleigh-Durham Airport makes it easy for travelers to enroll in the program or renew their membership.

CLEAR Lane Locations

Raleigh-Durham Airport offers CLEAR services to expedite the security process for travelers. CLEAR Plus lanes allow members to skip the standard security line and go straight to the TSA screening area. CLEAR members can use their biometric ID to access the CLEAR Plus lanes. CLEAR Plus lanes are located in the following terminal(s):

  • Terminal 1
  • Terminal 2

Airport Lounge Locations

RDU Airport has several lounges available for passengers to relax and unwind before their flight. The American Airlines Admirals Club is located in Terminal 2 near gate C3 and offers comfortable seating, complimentary snacks and drinks, and Wi-Fi access. The Delta Sky Club is also located in Terminal 2 near gate C3 and features a variety of amenities including showers, a bar, and a business center.

For those traveling with United Airlines, the United Club lounge is located in Terminal 1 near gate A7 and offers a quiet space to work or relax with complimentary snacks and drinks. The Priority Pass Lounge is available to members and is located in Terminal 1 near gate A5, offering a variety of amenities including showers, a bar, and Wi-Fi access.

Baggage Claim Areas

Baggage claim areas at the airport are located on the lower level of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Upon arrival, passengers should follow signs to baggage claim and wait at the designated carousel for their flight. Baggage carts are available near the baggage claim areas for a fee of $5, payable by credit card or cash. If your baggage is lost or delayed, visit the baggage service office located near baggage claim for assistance.

Luggage Cart Availability

Luggage carts are available for rent at RDU for a fee of $5. Carts can be found near the baggage claim areas on the lower level of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Payment can be made by credit card or cash. If you require assistance with your luggage, airport staff are available to help. Simply ask a staff member for assistance and they will be happy to assist you.

Luggage Storage Locations

Left luggage services are not currently available at Raleigh-Durham Airport. However, there are several luggage storage options available in the surrounding area. Luggage storage facilities can be found at nearby hotels, train stations, and bus stations. Alternatively, some luggage storage companies offer pick-up and drop-off services at the airport. It is recommended that you research your options in advance and make a reservation if possible.
