It is 5 miles (7 km) east of downtown Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas. BRO is owned by the city of Brownsville.

Airport Traveling Tips
- Travelers are advised to arrive at least 3 hours prior to the scheduled international flight departure, and 2 hours before a domestic flight.

- Passengers can be dropped off in front of the terminal. Because of TSA security requirements, no waiting is allowed at the front of the terminal building.
- For pickup, you can wait for the passengers outside the terminal, while they arrive at the pick up area after collecting their baggage.

30, 60, 90, 120-day and up to 12-month parking permits: $60 USD per month
- Travelers also have an option to obtain a parking permit at BRO Airport available through the Administration offices and can be purchased Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 12 pm and 1:00 to 4:30 pm. It isn’t available during the holidays.

Brownsville South Padre Island Airport: A Brief History Timeline
- Brownsville was once the main terminal for air service between the United States and Mexico.
- In 1931, American Airways was flying a multi-stop route from Brownsville to Dallas, connecting to Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities.
- During World War II the airport was redubbed Brownsville Army Air Field and used by the military for pilot training, engine testing and overhauls.
- In 1947 Pan Am's Mexico City route extended to Houston, and Brownsville was an intermediate stop.
- In 1962, Pan Am service to Brownsville ended, as the Mexico City flight became a nonstop DC-8 from Houston.
- In 1979, the year after airline deregulation, Brownsville had three airlines.
- In 1983 the airport was renamed the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.
- The airport is second to Valley International Airport in air cargo handling airports in the Rio Grande Valley.
- In 2014 expansion of the runway to 10,000 or 12,000 feet (3,000 or 3,700 m) was proposed by the Brownsville City Aviation Director.
