Getting Around IAH Airport

IAH Airport features five terminals: A, B, C, D, and E, each serving different airlines and flight types. Terminal A handles non-United domestic carriers and has 20 gates. Terminal B is dedicated to United Express flights with 40 gates, including 30 hardstands. Terminal C is for United's domestic flights and includes 29 gates. Terminal D serves non-United international flights with 12 gates, while Terminal E is designated for United's international flights, offering 24 gates.

To navigate between terminals, travelers can utilize the Skyway automated people mover system, which provides airside connections, ensuring a smooth transition between all five terminals. For landside connections, the Subway system links all terminals and the airport hotel, offering an alternative route for those who prefer to stay within the secure area.

Here are some tips for getting around the airport efficiently:

  • Check terminal maps and signage to identify your terminal and gate.
  • Utilize the Skyway or Subway systems for quick and easy transfers between terminals.
  • Allow extra time for connections, especially if transitioning between domestic and international flights.

Navigating the Airport

"If you’re connecting between terminals, use the Skyway for airside connections—it’s much faster than the Subway, especially during peak hours. Also, Terminal C has the best signage for finding your way around." — Maria G., Humble, TX, January 2024

"For those flying United, remember that Terminals B, C, and E are all connected via the Skyway. This can save you a ton of time if you have a tight connection." — David L., Spring, TX, March 2024

Amenities & Services

"Terminal E has some great dining options, but if you’re looking for a quick bite, the Pappasito's Cantina in Terminal C is a must. Also, don’t miss the Minute Suites in Terminal E if you need a quick nap." — Jessica R., The Woodlands, TX, February 2024

"For a more relaxed wait, check out the Centurion Lounge in Terminal E. It’s got everything from showers to complimentary food and drinks, making layovers much more bearable." — Ahmed S., Kingwood, TX, May 2024

Security

"CLEAR lanes are a lifesaver during rush hours, especially in Terminals A and C. If you travel frequently, it’s worth the investment to skip the long lines." — Emily T., Pasadena, TX, December 2023

"TSA PreCheck is available in all terminals, but Terminal B usually has the shortest lines. Plan accordingly if you’re in a hurry." — John M., Pearland, TX, April 2024

Baggage

"If you’re arriving internationally, Terminal E’s baggage claim is well-organized, but it can get crowded. Try to be among the first off the plane to beat the rush." — Luis H., Cypress, TX, June 2024

"For domestic flights, Terminal A’s baggage claim area has plenty of carts available, which can be a huge help if you have a lot of luggage." — Sarah P., Sugar Land, TX, August 2024

Security & Screening

In this section, you'll discover essential information about the security and screening processes at the airport. Learn about the locations of security checkpoints, the availability of Fast Track lanes, and where to find passport and immigration control. Additionally, find out about TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints, Global Entry locations, and the benefits of CLEAR lanes. Whether you're looking to expedite your security process or renew your TSA PreCheck membership, this guide has you covered.

Locations of Security Checkpoint(s)

George Bush Airport has security checkpoints located in each of its five terminals. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure time to allow enough time for security screening. The security checkpoints are equipped with advanced technology to ensure the safety of all passengers and their belongings. Passengers are required to remove their shoes, belts, and jackets, and place all electronic devices and liquids in a separate bin for screening.

Fast Track Lanes and Locations

Fast Track lanes are available for passengers who wish to expedite their security screening process. These lanes are located in each terminal, and are designated for passengers who have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry status. Passengers who are enrolled in these programs are able to use the Fast Track lanes, which typically have shorter wait times and less stringent screening procedures. Passengers who do not have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry status can apply for these programs online or at the airport.

Passport & Immigration Control Locations

Passport and immigration control is located in Terminal E of IAH. Passengers arriving on international flights are required to go through passport control, where their passports will be checked and stamped by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. After passport control, passengers will proceed to baggage claim to collect their luggage, and then go through customs inspection. Passengers may be asked to declare any items they are bringing into the country, and may be subject to additional screening if necessary.

TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints

At Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), there are multiple TSA and TSA Pre Checkpoints located throughout the airport. These checkpoints are designed to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and their belongings. TSA Pre Check is a program that allows eligible passengers to move through security checkpoints more quickly and with less hassle. To be eligible for TSA Pre Check, passengers must apply and be approved through the TSA Pre Check program. Once approved, passengers can use designated TSA Pre Check lanes at IAH and other participating airports.

To apply for Global Entry, passengers must complete an online application and schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. At IAH, the Enrollment Center is located in Terminal E, near Gate E12. Once approved, Global Entry members can use designated kiosks at IAH and other participating airports to expedite their entry into the United States.
