Other interesting collections include the items that make up the Clowes Collection, with artifacts dating as early as the 14th century, and modern studio glass and crafts created by local artists. Four theaters help visitors contrive their own definitions of a champion by illustrating the grueling daily lives of various student-athletes. The NCAA Hall of Honor highlights the esteemed character many of the athletes possess and how their strength of character helped them become important leaders. Other attractions include the Wall of Champions and The Turn of the Century Gymnasium.

4. Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

The magnificent Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, which was founded in 1930, has delighted millions with its musical excellence. Under the guidance of director Raymond Leppard, the ISO has presented as many as 200 performances in a year. In addition to performances in Indianapolis, this orchestra tours all over the world and has produced a number of CD's. This orchestra not only strives to please adults who appreciate fine music, but also to educate and entertain children of all ages in regards to the world of the symphony.

Standing atop a hill for all to see is this inspirational memorial with an introductory inscription that reads, “Vindicate the principles of peace and justice in the world.” Visitors will be able to see a variety of war paraphernalia that retraces the history of Indiana. A Shrine Room contains an altar with an American flag standing in honor of those who have lost their lives fighting for their country.

1. Indianapolis Speedway

The beginning of the Indianapolis Speedway dates back to 1909, when the automobile industry built a gravel track to test its newest model cars in front of a crowd of onlookers. The gravel proved to be hazardous, spurring the transformation of the 2.5-mile track from loose gravel to mortared brick, thus earning the nickname “The Brickyard.” Since the general public tends to thrive off of other people’s risks and injuries, the safer brick track failed to attract substantial crowds. On May 30, 1911, the owners held a race where the winner would take home a prize of over $14,000. The competition grabbed the public’s attention and drew a large crowd to watch the first of many Indianapolis 500’s.

This popular park, which borders the White River, is one of the first state parks in Indiana. The grounds are home to the Indianapolis Zoo, the National Institute of Fitness and Sport, and an IMAX Theater featuring 3D movies.

America’s twenty-third President, Benjamin Harrison, comes from a long line of important political figures. This attractive three-story home gives visitors a glimpse into the life of this man and his family. Many of the Victorian-style furnishings are pieces that actually belonged to Harrison when he lived here. The sizeable lawn, Centennial Room, and kitchen are all available to be rented for special events.
